Lance Sterling is the main protagonist of Blue Sky's last animated feature film, Spies in Disguise. He is a spy, and is considered to be the best the agency he works too has to offer. After being unfairly incriminated and accidentally transforming into a pigeon, he teams up with the young inventor, Walter Beckett, to clear his name and defeat the one who actually committed those crimes.
He is voiced by Will Smith.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
- He completed multiple missions in the past, saving the lives of countless people.
- He once prevented a terrorist named Killian and his fellow men from hurting many innocent people.
- He tries to get back a dangerous weapon stolen by Katsu Kimura.
- He tracks down Katsu Kimura and interrogates him along with Walter.
- Eventually befriends the pigeons that constantly follow him.
- Frees Walter after Marcy captures him.
- Saves Walter from Killian in Veneza, Italy.
- Sends Walter away from the mission due to fearing he might be killed stating that the world already lost too many good people.
- This statement shows that he did so out of concern for Walter's life
- Tried to convince Killian to spare Walter.
- Tries (albeit unsuccessfully) to defeat Killian and the drones on his own.
- By fighting Killian alongside Marcy, giving Walter enough time to hack his robot arm, Lance saves the lives of hundreds of spies in the agency who were about to get killed by the drones.
- Alongside the other pigeons, saved Walter from falling to his death.
- Refused to join the agency again unless Walter was in it.
- Helped Walter stop a group of criminals from launching a missile and possibly killing many innocent people.
- Decided to stop using lethal force on criminals due to Walter’s influence and finding out Killian cared for his men in Kyrgyzstan.
- While he is arrogant and values his position in the agency very much, his main motivation to be a spy is because of genuine desire for justice, in spite of his initially extremist ways.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- At the start of the movie he had extremist, if not outright anti-heroic tactics while completing his missions, and had no problem with killing his enemies. Although this gets better at the end of the movie, his lethality is what drives the plot of the film, as it is part of Killian's motivations.
- He is extremely arrogant and thinks he can do everything alone, constantly dismissing Walter and having to be told Walter was the only chance at a cure so he could go. Lance even tries to ask Walter for help despite firing him earlier. He gets more sympathetic at the end though.
- He was a massive jerk at the start, firing Walter simply for creating non-lethal weapons and disagreeing with his methods.
- He imagined outright murdering Walter by ejecting him from the plane simply for being annoying, although this is played for laughs.
- He showed a little bit of sadism when he thought Walter's pen was going to do something terrible at Kimura's face, and even attempted to torture the crime boss a few moments earlier.
- He is an control freak, as he orders Walter to make a cure multiple times, tries to get the bird flock to do what he says, and tells Walter to hand over his disappearing tech not moments after he fired him.
- Was willing to use lethal methods against other agents that were innocent and were following him just due to thinking he was behind the drone attacks.
- While he sheds his corrupting qualities at the end of the film, there wasn't much time to show how much he got better, with said corrupting qualities being a crucial part of the movie’s plot.
Trivia[]
- He is one of the 2 heroes from Blue Sky to be Inconsistently Admirable, the first being Manny.
- Had the movie not gained a Box Office Bomb and Blue Sky weren't closed, there was the possibility Lance could be NPG if there was a potential sequel to highlight more how he improved himself.
