My vengeance... ends now.
~ Kratos abandoning his rage against Olympus and redeeming himself.
Kratos: Boy. Listen close. I am from a land called Sparta. I made a deal with a god that cost me my soul, I killed many who were deserving, and many who were not. I killed my father.
Atreus: That was your father in Hel... Is this what it is to be a god? Is this how it always ends? Sons killing their mothers... their fathers?
Kratos: No. We will be the gods we choose to be, not those who have been. Who I was, is not who you will be. We must be better.
~ Kratos finally telling his bloody past to Atreus.
Son, listen closely. You feel their pain because that is who you are. And you must never sacrifice that. Never. Not for anyone. I was wrong, Atreus. I was wrong. Open your heart. Open your heart to their suffering. That is your mother's wish... and mine as well. Today... Today, we will be better.
~ Kratos expressing remorse for ignoring the suffering of the Nine Realms and advising himself and Atreus to save them from Odin and the Aesir.
A god of war... a god of pain, of suffering, of destruction. The Norns said I chase a redemption that I know I can never deserve. What does that make me? God of fools? A god of... hope.
~ Kratos accepting his past

Kratos is the titular main protagonist of the God of War franchise.

A Spartan general, Kratos entered the servitude of Ares in order to win wars, turning against him when Ares manipulated him into killing his wife and daughter. Despite allying with the Gods to defeat him, Kratos waged a war against them after getting betrayed, resulting in the destruction of the world, after which Kratos learned the error of his ways and became a more heroic character.

He is voiced by Terrence C. Carson in the Greek Era and Christopher Judge in the Norse Era.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

Greek Era[]

  • Tried to save his brother Deimos from getting kidnapped by Ares and Athena.
  • He allowed his soldiers to rest while trying to get the Ambrosia out of respect for Nikos, a spartan captain who died during their quest.
  • Used Ambrosia to heal Calliope from her sickness, saving her from getting killed.
  • Turned against Ares after getting manipulated into killing his wife and daughter when attacking a temple dedicated to Athena.
  • Fought against several mythological beasts and saved several civilians from them.
  • Rejected Alecto's offer to rejoin Ares's side and defeated her.
  • Although he did kill Orkos, this was only because Orkos wanted him to nullify Ares's control over him, and was heavily regretful of the deed.
  • He ended the Persian's attack on the city of Attica.
  • Sacrificed his abilities and powers to the Forsaken Tree so that he could meet Calliope in Elysium.
  • Defeated Persephone and stopped her plans to destroy the world with Helios's power.
  • Defeated the Hydra who was terrorizing Greece.
  • He tried to save a group of women from a ship that was attacked by the Hydra and other creatures.
  • When Ares tortured him by conjuring his wife and daughter, Kratos did his best to stop Ares from killing them all over again and was saddened when he failed.
  • Defeated Ares and avenged his wife and daughter, also stopping him from waging war in Greece against Athena.
  • Ended his mother's deformed misery.
  • Rescued Deimos from Thanatos who tortured Deimos for the majority of his life.
  • Fought with Deimos to avenge his capture at the hands of Thanatos, and was devastated when Deimos sacrificed himself to save him.
  • Felt remorseful when he accidentally killed the Last Spartan, the sole survivor from his army as well as Sparta.
    • When the Last Spartan informed him that Zeus destroyed Sparta out of pettiness, Kratos promised him that Sparta would be avenged.
    • He also may have likely revived the Last Spartan due to changing his fate in the timeline, undoing the mass genocide of his army.
  • Defeated the Sisters of Fate who ruled over the Loom in an iron fist, freeing the Greek World from their influence.
  • When Athena jumped in between Kratos attempting to kill Zeus, he was genuinely upset at her death and told her that he didn't truly want to destroy the world, only Zeus. Despite his declaration to destroy Olympus anyway, he only did it to give Zeus the punishment he deserved.
  • Tried to spare several gods when pursuing Zeus, only fighting them due to getting in his way.
  • Forgave Hephaestus for betraying him due to the latter wanting to protect his daughter, Pandora.
  • Saved Pandora numerous times, even considering not sacrificing her by giving up his chance to defeat Zeus, and was upset when Zeus goaded him into doing so.
  • Killed Zeus, ending his tyranny over the Greek realm.
  • When a corrupted Athena requested him to bequeath Hope to her, Kratos realized that he had been played by her so that she could reign over Greece as its sole goddess, and stabbed himself with the Blade of Olympus in order to release Hope to save the world after Zeus's death.

Norse Era[]

  • Named his son Atreus after a fallen soldier from Sparta, partly out of regret for his actions against Greece and his homeland as well as out of respect for him.
    • Kratos also chose not to subject Atreus to Spartan training given its cruel and unforgiving nature. While this is admittedly done in order to spare his son from such cruelty, such decision proved to be a wise one as it ensured Atreus never growing up wrong like Magni and Modi did as well.
  • To control his anger by going to find animals so they would attack him, while holding back and never hurting them.
  • He tried to save a pack of wolves from two trolls.
  • He saved Atreus from a group of Berserkers.
  • He honored the request of an old seer who tried to convince him to let go of his anger by burning her body and making a funeral pyre for her.
  • Despite him staying away from Faye and Atreus for days at times, this is due to Kratos's fear of negatively influencing him into how he was before, not out of neglect.
  • Despite laying low to keep himself from the radar of the Norse Gods, Kratos immediately fought Baldur when he made clear he wished to harm Atreus.
  • After Baldur's attack, Kratos decided to travel to the highest peak to scatter Faye's ashes and also brought Atreus along to better safeguard him as well as attempt to become a better father.
  • Saved Hrungnir by bringing him to Freya.
  • Repaired Týr's temple to re-enable travel between realms, which was accidentally submerged by the World Serpent.
  • Killed Mimir not out of any malice, but only to free him from the unending torment Odin brought upon him every day, and also ensuring that Mimir comes back to life as soon as possible.
  • After Atreus fell ill, Kratos retrieved the Blades of Chaos despite its bloody past so he could access Helheim to cure Atreus.
  • Firmly reprimanded Atreus when the reveal of his godhood was turning him violent, resulting in Atreus feeling remorseful and abandoning his arrogance.
  • Expressed remorse for murdering Zeus in cold blood, and advised Atreus that they have to be better than the previous gods.
  • Tried to reason with Baldur to spare Freya from his revenge, only killing him when he decided to kill Freya anyway. He also partly did this because Baldur’s choice confirmed to him that Baldur would come after him and Atreus again.
  • Spared Freya and avoided harming her during her attacks on him over the three years.
  • Helping Freya break free from Odin's spell on her and opened up to the latter thus allowing her to let go of her desire for vengeance in the light of the former Ghost of Sparta who resorted to killing her son Baldur previously.
  • Taking Norns' teasing of him regarding his nature to reflect on his flaws and with it, properly growing out of his past detestable self.
  • He apologizes for being distrustful of Atreus and tougher on him than he (arguably) had to be, shortly after Fenrir is revived in Garm’s body. When Atreus repeated his father’s quote about being better rather than sorry, he smiled at the thought of his son taking his advice.
  • Even when Heimdall threatened Atreus, Kratos offered him mercy if he backed off. Kratos only killed Heimdall when the Asgardian made it clear he had no intention of leaving Atreus alone.
  • During Ragnarök, Kratos wasted no time to inform his allies in evacuating civilians caught in crossfire, contrasting to how he ignored the well-being of innocent people back during his time as Spartan general under Olympians' service.
    • He also inspired Thor to change for the sake of their children, though the act earned the two (along with Atreus) Odin's wrath, where the heartless All-Father killed the Nordic Thunder God in cold blood, nearly doing the same to both him and his son until Freya intervened.
  • Defeated Odin to avenge Thor's death and stop his tyrannical rule over the Nine Realms.
  • Defeated the Raven Keeper, who was putting children's souls into Odin's ravens to free them from their suffering.
  • Allows Atreus to depart for his and Angrboða's journey to locate more of the surviving Jötnar.
Valhalla[]
  • When facing his past heinous self, Kratos eventually sympathizes with him and tells him that despite all his evil deeds, he is capable of benevolent actions.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • Dispatched several Olympians in a pretty gruesome manner, such as Poseidon, Hermes, and Helios. Although most of the Olympian Gods did deserve it, it was still very brutal and very excessive.
    • His killing of Zeus and Ares doesn't count, as they completely deserved it.
  • Despite subverting most of his corrupting factors by Ragnarök, Kratos choked Heimdall to death without mercy, against Mimir's protests, noting in the journal that part of him felt glad doing it. That said, the deed visibly left him shaken for both he and Mimir were uncertain whether they subverted fate or the other way around, and it is made clear that the only way to stop Heimdall was to kill him, making this a somewhat minor prevention.

Trivia[]

  • Kratos, Athena, and Freya are the only God of War heroes to be Inconsistently Admirable.
