King Kong, also known as Kong and dubbed as Titanus Kong, is the deuteragonist of Legendary's MonsterVerse franchise.
He is a giant simian Titan who serves as the protective guardian of Skull Island (later the Hollow Earth) and their natural order. He ensures that his territory remains stable by protecting the Iwi and ward threats off in Skull Island, and protecting the Great Apes and maintain his benevolent rule over the Hollow Earth.
The last of a race of huge, brawny apes who reigned over Skull Island, Kong was born in the midst of a genocidal battle between his species and the vicious Skullcrawlers, and (after witnessing the deaths of his species) vows to protect the island at all costs, as well as avenging their deaths and his slain parents. He is the surrogate father of Jia and Suko, Godzilla's former enemy-turned-ally, and archenemy to the Skull Devil, Kraken and Skar King.
He was portrayed by Terry Notary in Kong: Skull Island, with Toby Kebbell adding facial capture reference. As of Godzilla vs. Kong, he is portrayed by Allan Henry, with Eric Petey adding full body performance and facial capture.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
- He is considered Skull Island's natural guardian of its environment.
- He protects the island from the Skullcrawlers and managed to kill most of the adults.
- He prevents Gunpei Ikari from killing Hank Marlow, indirectly having the two share a bond afterwards.
- He rescues a Sker Buffalo which is trapped under a crashed helicopter.
- In the final battle, he helps the Monarch team escape the island and defeats the Skull Devil.
- He saves Mason Weaver from drowning.
- He saves Jia, the last survivor of the Iwi population on Skull Island, from death in the storm.
- He helps to bring down the trap that Maia Simmons tried to lay for her father's success and saves the heroes from it.
- Despite their rivalry, he cooperates with Godzilla in the battle against Mechagodzilla and tears off his head with his axe, saving the world from the giant haywire robot.
- After Mechagodzilla's defeat, he drops his axe to declare a truce between him and Godzilla, redeeming themselves and ending the rivalry between their species.
- Upon meeting Suko and defeating a group of Red Stripes that ambushed him, he befriends him and will later go on to adopt him as his son.
- Despite the Red Stripes being hostile to him, he rescues one of them, Stone Fist, who is hanging off the cliff, but once helping him back up, Stone Fist tries to stab him, so Kong has to kick him back down in self-defense.
- This sparks inspiration in Suko, as he helps set off one of his traps onto some Red Stripes who were chasing Kong as an act of loyalty. Furthermore, this same loyalty would drive Suko to retrieve his battle axe and use it to shatter the crystal the Skar King used to control Shimo.
- He fights off a Drownviper to protect Suko and himself, and he later offers a piece of it as food to the latter.
- Upon seeing one of the Great Apes being abused by the Skar King's guards, he willingly helps him and punches another Red Stripe, Catcher, after yelling at him for not obeying the Skar King's orders.
- He attempts to defeat the Skar King in his first battle with him, showing resilience against his tyranny.
- He goes to Egypt to recruit Godzilla in the battle against the Skar King, and also actively refuses to fight Godzilla until the latter forced his hand.
- With the help of Godzilla, Suko, and even Shimo, he is able to kill the Skar King, free Shimo and all the other Great Apes from his tyrannical rule and save the world.
- In contrast to Godzilla, who doesn't seem to care about how much damage he brings during his fights, he actively tries to avoid causing as much destruction as possible when around human territory.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He is incredibly wrathful and lethal, both to fellow monsters and even humans.
- He brutally kills many Skullcrawlers and destroys dozens of helicopters which circled over his island and dropped bombs, although for the latter it was done to defend his territory and prevent Lt. Col. Packard from awakening the Skullcrawlers.
- He rips off and eats the arm of the Mire Squid afer crushing its head.
- He intimidates a pack of Wart Dogs into fleeing by grabbing one of their members (who was already dead) and tearing them in half above him, showering him in its blood as he roared.
- While these moments of lethality on Titans can be arguably minor compared to others, as they were either in self-defense, hunting for food, or both, his intimidation display on the Wart Dogs is a little extreme past both of these reasons.
- Him killing Mechagodzilla doesn't count, as it's a machine mind-controlled by Ghidorah, who deserved his fate for everything he has done.
- Him killing the Kraken and Skar King doesn't count either, as they also deserved it like Mechagodzilla.
- He had a strong rivalry with Godzilla and while the latter mostly provoked him first, he fought back willingly. This is more so the case when Godzilla attacked him in Egypt, as while he tried to communicate for him to follow along and join him in the battle against the Skar King in Hollow Earth, Godzilla instead dealt the first blows, which made him (visibly hesitant to fight back before) retaliate. However, after their cooperation in Mechagodzilla's defeat and Mothra's intervention later on uniting them both, this has become a more minor prevention.
Trivia[]
- He and Godzilla are the only two MonsterVerse Inconsistently Admirable characters to be kaiju protagonists.
- Interestingly, the rivalry between their species and the grudge they have against each other, as well as their lethal tendencies, are both preventions as to why they can't be NPG or PG.
- However, it will be in a matter of time for him to attain PG status, as the upcoming 6th MonsterVerse movie will likely explore his relationship with Suko and Shimo while helping them and the rest of Suko's tribe recovering from the Skar King's tyranny, as well as teaming up with Godzilla and other heroic titans (including Mothra as the group's voice of reason) against another threat.
- Many fans have compared him to Kratos from the God of War franchise, a fellow IA. Both of them started off as wrathful berserkers, but later mellowed out to do things strategically and calmly. They both grow a long beard, wield an axe, and become fathers/father-figures to a child with red hair.
