King Ghidorah is one of the three titular kaiju protagonists (alongside Mothra and Baragon) of the 2001 film Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All Out Attack. Unlike other incarnations of him who are portrayed as villains, this version is portrayed as a benevolent monster who protects Japan from Godzilla.
In the past, he used to be an eight-headed dragon named Yamata no Orochi, who was slain by anicient Japanese warriors and laid to rest under the Aokigahara near Mount Fuji. Alongside Baragon and Mothra, the warriors prayed for his soul so that one day they would come to protect Japan. Over the course of a thousand years, he began regenerating his heads. However, before could finish regenerating his remaining five heads, he was prematurely awakened by a prophet named Hirotoshi Isayama (who had empowered him with the souls of Japan’s honorable dead in order to do so) so that he could protect Japan from Godzilla.
He was portrayed by Akira Ohashi.

What Makes Him Admirable[]
- As Yuri and Mitsuaki Takeda were falling to their deaths in Tokyo bay (after Godzilla damaged the bridge they were on), he used his roar to create bubbles and break the surface tension of the water so that they wouldn’t die.
- Caused a wound on Godzilla which would later be exploited by Tachibana.
- Freed the satsuma Tachibana was in from Godzilla’s grip.
- As a spirit, he went inside Godzilla’s body and dragged him underwater, allowing Taizo Tachibana to sail the Satsuma and fire a D-03 Missile inside Godzilla and open a gaping wound on his neck, culminating in Godzilla destroying himself when he fired his atomic breath.
What Makes Him Inconsistent[]
- While he was willing to work with the humans and at certain points went out of their way to protect them, it’s stated that he and other guardian monsters main goal/priority was protecting Japan itself (as in the land and the environment) from getting destroyed by Godzilla rather than the people living there
Trivia[]
- This is the first version of King Ghidorah to be Inconsistently Admirable. His parody version Noodle Neck follows suit.
- He is one of the three GMK characters (alongside Mothra and Baragon) to be inconsistently admirable
- Earlier plans meant to have Varan in his place but King Ghidorah took his place by Toho's request. Had it been kept Varan would've been in his spot on the wiki.
