~ Jotaro after killing DIO for good. |
Jotaro "JoJo" Kujo is the titular main protagonist of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise.
Originally a Japanese delinquent, Jotaro is a member of the Joestar family and the third Joestar to carry the "JoJo" moniker. He would famously embark on a journey to save his dying mother and kill the Joestar family's archenemy, Dio Brando. Afterwards, Jotaro would become a marine biologist and frequently make reappearances in the series, serving as a mentor to other Joestars such as Josuke Higashikata. Jotaro wields the stand known as Star Platinum, a stand similar to that of Dio's The World which allows him to stop time. He's also the son of Holy Kujo, the grandson of Joseph Joestar, the father of Jolyne Cujoh, and a descendant of Jonathan Joestar.
He was voiced by Kiyoyuki Yanada in the 1993 CD drama adaptation of Stardust Crusaders and Heritage for the Future, Jurota Kosuhi in the OVA, Tetsu Inada in the Golden Wind video game adaptation, and and Daisuke Ono in the anime and all other appearances (who also voiced Erwin Smith in Attack on Titan). In English, he is voiced by Abie Hadjitarkhani in the OVA and Matthew Mercer in the anime (who also voices Levi Ackerman from Attack on Titan). In the 2017 live action adaption of Diamond is Unbreakable, he was portrayed by Yusuke Iseya.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
In General[]
- Out of all the series' protagonists. he's arguably one of the least lethal of them (besides Josuke, who has a kill count of zero, though he did have Yoshihiro Kira killed by his own son), oftentimes opting to just "retire" his opponents.
- Despite being a neglectful husband and father to his wife and daughter Jolyne for the near entirety of their relationships, he did this out of the safety to protect them from the dangers of Stands and DIO’s minions.
Stardust Crusaders[]
- Had himself imprisoned upon discovering his Stand and decided to remain there as long as he can so there wouldn’t be any damages done to others accidentally caused by him.
- Saved a school nurse from being possessed by Hierophant Green during his battle against a brainwashed Kakyoin.
- Even after being attacked by Kakyoin, he opted to save him in an act of generosity and later on helped removing DIO's flesh bud from his head.
- Joined his grandfather, Joseph, on an expedition to Egypt to kill DIO and save his mother, who had fallen ill due to his influence.
- Removed DIO's flesh bud from Polnareff's head.
- Saved the runaway girl, Merlai Anne, from drowning and frequently protects her from enemy stand users such as Impostor Captain Tennille, Forever, Rubber Soul and ZZ.
- Helped fake Muhammad Avdol's death alongside Joseph, after Avdol was wounded by J. Geil and Hol Horse, which got DIO and his minions off of Avdol for a while.
- Saved Polnareff from Enya Geil.
- In spite of Enya being his enemy, Jotaro (along with the other crusaders) was horrified when Steely Dan brutally murdered her.
- Allowed Steely Dan to abuse him so that he wouldn't hurt Joseph. Once Joseph was free, Jotaro gave Steely Dan a well-deserved beatdown, which was played for stress relief, when he tried to harm a child once he was at a disadvantage. On top of allowing such a sadistic scumbag as Dan to survive it, the impact of the beatdown also completely debilitated him from continuing his evil ways.
- He would pretend to compliment Midler by using his charisma so that she could bring her guard down when the Crusaders were trapped within the mouth of Empress, though his efforts were in vain as she saw through his act. Then, Jotaro repeatedly pummels through the teeth of Empress so that he could save his group, showing his perseverance.
- Even after N'Doul had the rest of the Crusaders cornered, Jotaro didn't give up and managed to defeat him.
- When N'Doul kills himself to avoid being interrogated, Jotaro is noticeably distraught by his death, finding him to be a worthy opponent.
- Fought a barber named Khan and later Polnareff after they had been possessed by the stand, Anubis, freeing them from the stand's influence.
- When Alessi turns Jotaro into a little kid, Jotaro still managed to give him a beatdown, saving a younger Polnareff in the process. Soon afterwards, he and Polnareff give Alessi a satisfying beatdown once they both revert to their current ages.
- He would smile and respect Polnareff upon witnessing his nobility by choosing to leave Melena for her own safety, despite the latter's genuine love for her.
- After Polnareff and Joseph lose their souls to Daniel J. D'Arby, Jotaro wagers his own soul to win theirs back. Not only did he win back the souls of Polnareff and Joseph upon defeating D'Arby, but he also managed to free the souls of everyone else that were unfortunate enough to lose their souls to the latter.
- Later Jotaro defeated D'Arby's more sadistic younger brother and saved Kakyoin from a fate worse than death.
- During Jotaro's final battle with DIO:
- He was rightfully infuriated when DIO killed Joseph and revealed he had already killed Kakyoin. Though, he quickly regains control over his emotions.
- Saved Polnareff again by making a noise while playing possum to distract DIO.
- After breaking DIO’s legs, he’s shown to be honorable as he gave him a moment to heal his injuries and get up to fight back.
- Killed DIO and saved the world from his domination for the time being. By doing so, he freed the Joestar Bloodline from DIO's curse, including his mother and the infant Josuke Higashikata. Although slaying DIO would indirectly result with the fleshbud of Mansaku Nijimura activating to morph him into a genetically horrifying mutation that would prompt his son Keicho to shoot and kill people with his Stand arrow in hopes of awakening a stand user capable of freeing his father from his fate, Jotaro did not know or intend for this to happen.
- Read DIO's diary and destroyed it as he found the contents extremely dangerous.
- After the final battle with DIO, Jotaro uses the blood from DIO's corpse to successfully revive Joseph.
- He helps Joseph place DIO's/Jonathan's corpse into the desert so that it could be disintegrated by the sun, thus closing the book on DIO's influence within their bloodline.
- Mourns the losses of the friends he lost during the plane ride home.
Post-Stardust Crusaders[]
- When he and Polnareff discover the truth about Stands and the reason why so many people across the world have Stands, Jotaro would travel across America and Asia in search of the arrows and for the man who uncovered the arrows, Diavolo.
- When he learns that his family would be in danger of being attacked by enemy Stand users and the remaining agents of DIO, Jotaro would redirect them away from his wife and daughter.
Diamond is Unbreakable[]
- During Part 4, Jotaro considerably mellows down and becomes less aggressive.
- Ten years later, Jotaro would introduce himself to Josuke Higashikata and welcome him into the Joestar Family.
- Warns Josuke of the serial killer, Anjuro "Angelo" Katagiri, a notorious and depraved criminal who he finds utterly disgusting due to his list of crimes.
- Offers some comforting words to Josuke after Angelo murders his grandfather.
- Helps Josuke defeat Angelo.
- Arranges for Joseph to come to Morioh so they could track down Red Hot Chili Pepper's user.
- He asks Josuke to assist him with helping track down a few rats that were made into stand users by Akira and actively risked his life by distracting the rats from attacking Josuke.
- Upon learning of another serial killer in Morioh, Yoshikage Kira, Jotaro aids Josuke and his friends in investigating him.
- When Shigechi died giving the Morioh group one of Kira's buttons as a clue to his identity, Jotaro and Koichi would investigate the tailor shop that it came from.
- Defends Koichi from Kira's sub-stand, Sheer Heart Attack. Nearly costing Jotaro his own life in the process.
- After Koichi is mortally wounded by Kira, Jotaro uses Star Platinum to beat the killer to a bloody pulp and knock him out. Then, he shows genuine respect towards Koichi's nobility before passing out.
- When Josuke tried to heal Aya Tsuji of her fatal wounds inflicted by Yoshikage Kira's stand known as Killer Queen, Jotaro warned Josuke to not touch her as he realized that Josuke was too late to save her, for she was already made into a bomb.
- Defeated Yoshihiro Kira by trapping him in a photograph. If Okuyasu hadn't been tricked into opening it, they likely would've found Yoshikage sooner.
- During the final battle with Kira, Josuke had been heavily wounded, though he managed to reveal Kira's stolen identity to the others. When Kira tried to reset time by 30 minutes using his Bites the Dust ability, Jotaro stops time (with the help of Koichi)
- After he shows his genuine gratitude towards Koichi for helping him during stopped time, Jotaro breaks Kira's hand to keep him from using Bites the Dust, before pummeling him and sending him flying towards the direction of an ambulance, thus saving all of Morioh as Kira got run over.
- Once Kira was sent off to his eternal damnation, Jotaro would join the others in bidding Reimi and Arnold farewell as they ascend to Heaven.
- When he and Joseph leave Morioh, they are glad to know that the town would be protected by the stand users with hearts of gold.
Golden Wind[]
- Sent Koichi to Italy to investigate DIO's illegitimate son known as Giorno Giovanna and ascertain if he's a threat or not.
- When he learns that Koichi was robbed of his belongings, Jotaro would arrange money and a plane for Koichi to go back to Morioh safely.
- After hearing of Giorno's heroic and noble nature, which was the complete opposite of DIO's nature, Jotaro would call the mission off and had Koichi safely return to Morioh.
- Him sending Koichi to Italy in the first place is what set the events of Part 5 in motion, as Giorno would become aware of the nature of Stand users and their abilities due to his interaction with Koichi, and it would all end with Giorno defeating Diavolo and saving all of Italy.
Stone Ocean[]
- Arranged for his daughter, Jolyne, to receive a locket which gave her a stand of her own. He would also arrange a submarine so that the two of them could escape prison.
- He would listen to Jolyne express her pain and emotions about the fact that Jotaro wasn't there to be a father for her. While he didn't say it, he was genuinely remorseful for not being there, and he sought to make things right.
- Saved Jolyne from getting shot by Johngalli A and Pucci, sacrificing his soul/Stand and memory to do so.
- Before he went into a coma, Jotaro would admit that despite the fact that he was barely there for Jolyne throughout her childhood, he always cherished her.
- Joined Jolyne and her group to stop Pucci from resetting the universe.
- Sacrificed himself to save Jolyne from Enrico Pucci, who in turn saved Emporio Alniño from getting killed by him, saving the Joestars in the long run.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He has a hard time controlling his temper, acts like a jerk to almost everyone, can be very ruthless to his enemies, and is rude to the point where he curses out and even verbally abuses his own mother.
- Though these traits are toned down and seemingly subverted by the time of Part 4, they still show up every now and then.
- Although he had good intentions, he was a neglectful husband and father. Throughout Jolyne's life, Jotaro was never there for her or her mother and focused mostly on his work. This led to him divorcing his wife, and Jolyne joining a motorcycle gang (making several terrible choices in the process).
- Despite rarely being lethal, he's shown time and time again that he has no issues with possibly killing (like Rubber Soul and Steely Dan, though they both deserved it) or even straight-up murdering a number of his enemies (such as the Imposter Captain Tenille and Forever, though the latter deserved it) and even when he doesn't kill them, he's still very brutal and shows no qualms in beating his enemies to a pulp.
- He left ZZ tied up in the middle of the desert, possibly leading to his death by starvation or insolation, which, despite the latter's actions, is still way too extreme of a punishment.
- Quite a few of Jotaro's tactics are questionable at best, such as when he bet the souls of Kakyoin and his own mother without their knowledge or consent. Avdol even calls Jotaro out on this, only for Jotaro to acknowledge how selfish it seems, and do it anyway. However, it is also likely that Jotaro was bluffing because he was confident in his victory, making this a minor prevention.
Trivia[]
- If the reincarnated Jotaro Kujo remained the same after the final universal reset, then he can still be admired for all that he's done (prior to Stone Ocean).
