Your next line is.../Next you'll say...
~ Joseph's most famous line in Part 2, also said to the Empress in Part 3.

Joseph "JoJo" Joestar is the titular deuteragonist of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise.

He served as the titular main protagonist of Battle Tendency, the titular deuteragonist of Stardust Crusaders, and one of the two overarching protagonists (alongside Reimi Sugimoto) of Diamond is Unbreakable (titular in his case).

He's the son of George Joestar II and Lisa Lisa, and the grandson of Jonathan and Erina Joestar. He later becomes the husband of Suzi Q, the father of Holly Kujo, the grandfather of Jotaro Kujo, and the illegitimate father of Josuke Higashikata.

In Part 2: Battle Tendency, he was voiced by Tomokazu Sugita in Japanese, Benjamin Diskin and Richard Epcar in the English dub for both young & old versions respectively, and Miguel de León in the Latin Spanish Dub. In Part 3: Stardust Crusaders & Part 4: Diamond is Unbreakable, he was voiced by the late Unshō Ishizuka in Japanese, and by Richard Epcar in the English Dub, who also voiced Raiden from Mortal Kombat.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

In General[]

  • Joseph respects his late grandfather Jonathan Joestar and as well as the former's late father George Joestar II.
  • He generally considers Robert E. O. Speedwagon as his uncle.
  • While his famous method known as the "Joestar Family Secret Technique" does involve running away, Joseph himself admits he will never actually run from a fight. He only uses said technique to strategically reposition himself and lead his enemies (such as Straizo and especially Kars) away from innocents or loved ones.
    • He even taught Jotaro how to use that technique.
  • While he did team up with the Nazi Party to defeat the Pillar Men, he never partook or aided in any of their crimes or heinous deeds.
  • He makes sure that he, his allies, and innocent lives (if remain alive) survive various plane crashes.
  • Since he became a father for Holly, Joseph takes his role as a family man very seriously.
  • Being slack off his hamon training when he became older does not stop him from doing heroic deeds.
  • While he's not as powerful as the other arc protagonists, especially compare to the likes of Jonathan and Jotaro, he makes up for it by using his wits; especially in his youth when he was at his best physical condition.
  • He understandably resents Dio Brando (currently as DIO) for not only ruined his early life but also causes harm and deaths on everyone else (including innocent lives).
  • Even though his role in Part 3 OVA adaptation portrays more serious and far less comical, Joseph does not darken the mood of the story.
  • Although he used to be aggressively xenophobic towards the Japanese after his daughter Holy married a Japanese man, often disdaining their culture and disrespecting their people, even beating up a man after bumping into him simply because he was Japanese, this corrupting quality is subverted in later parts: He got along with the Morioh Gang, and he even acknowledges how good Japanese coffee is, which was something that he was refusing to admit back in Part 3. He even befriends with Rohan despite the latter is extremely rude (if not hostile) towards most people.

Battle Tendency[]

  • He was angry at a gunman for spilled blood on his sweater that Erina gave him as a present. This causes Joseph to unlock his hamon.
  • Saved Robert E.O. Speedwagon and an innocent pilot from a plane crash.
  • Defended Smokey Brown from a pair of racist police officers in New York, even after Smokey had stolen his wallet.
  • Despite he rightfully attacks the corrupt officers, he's in panic of let his anger get the best of him and Erina would scold him only for his temper.
  • He and Erina are open minded about black people and have no problems of befriend with Smokey. This causes Smokey to redeem himself.
  • Upon Erina's presence, he stops antagonizing a taxi driver.
  • Defends Smokey from a harasser from a fine dine restaurant and defeat the latter without even laying a finger on him. Those who witness the "fight" congratulates Joseph for it.
  • Joseph defeated the vampire Straizo before heading to Mexico to investigate the Pillar Men.
    • He intends to pay property damage.
    • Plans to turn himself in to the police if he did kill Straizo that would've turn out to be human.
    • Joseph saves an innocent woman that was kidnap by Straizo.
    • Despite everything Straizo had done since he betrayed Speedwagon, Joseph tried to stop him from self destruct.
  • On his way to save Speedwagon, he defeat one of Nazi agents.
  • Saved Speedwagon from the Nazis and Santana.
  • Despite Stroheim is a Nazi, Joseph is reluctant to cut off the Strohiem's legs off as the latter requested in order to defeat Santana.
  • Defeated Santana before heading to Rome, Italy to take on the other Pillar Men and meeting Caeser Zeppeli.
  • Angry at Caeser for disrespecting the late Jonathan Joestar.
  • While Joseph fighting Caeser, the former is not amused of the latter using hamon to brainwash a random woman just to attack him.
  • He and Caeser tried to warn the latter's friend Mark to not get near the Piller Men.
  • Expressed sympathy to Caesar for Mark's death.
  • After being bested by Wamuu, Joseph led him and the other Pillar Men away from Speedwagon and Caesar.
  • He finally gains Caesar's genuine respect.
  • After being given a month to advance his Hamon skills, the reluctant Joseph and his rival Caesar undergoes harsh training under Lisa Lisa.
  • After he and Caeser completed their trial from "Hell Climb Pillar", Joseph is starting to be respectful towards Lisa Lisa.
  • (Manga only): Under Lisa Lisa's orders, he scares off the harasser that was bothering her.
  • After his personal Hamon coach was murdered by Esidisi, Joseph still mourned him even after all the hell he had to go through.
  • Defeats Esidisi in battle.
  • Flirts with Suzi Q without being too hostile.
  • Worked with Caesar to force Esidisi out of Suzi Q's body, saving her life in the process.
  • Mourned Esidisi after his death, showing some respect to his fallen adversary.
  • Vows to see Suzi Q again as soon as the Piller Men are defeated.
  • In Switzerland, he risked his life to keep the Red Stone of Aja from falling into Kars' hands with the aid of Caesar.
  • Tries to reason with Caeser to have a cautious plan about defeating the pillar men.
  • Able to understand more about Caeser thanks to Lisa Lisa's explanation of Caeser's origin.
  • He and Lisa Lisa burst into tears after learning Caesar died from his fight with Wamuu.
  • He wants to fight a misogynistic vampire named Wire Beck but allows Lisa Lisa to beat him instead. Also he refuses to agree with Wired Beck that women should be punished. Instead, he tells him about the karmic irony.
  • Being impress that Lisa Lisa's hamon abilities, fighting skills, and deception at her enemies surpasses his.
  • Avenges Caesar's death by beating Wamuu in a rematch.
  • When Wamuu was reduced to a disembodied head after Joseph defeated him, Joseph uses some of his own blood to ease the pain. This act of respect was enough for Wamuu to bury the hatchet with Joseph before he dies as his friend.
  • Joseph was disgusted when Kars cheated during his fight with Lisa Lisa by using one of his henchmen as a decoy.
  • Saved Lisa Lisa from falling to her death and left her with Speedwagon for safekeeping.
  • When Kars reached his ultimate form, Joseph hijacks Stroheim's jet and attempts to fly Kars into a volcano to trap him forever. Also he accepts Stroheim's assistance to avoid being killed.
  • Even after everything else had failed, Joseph still manages to defeat Kars and save the world. Though it was pure instinct, that doesn't diminish the impact of Joseph's achievement.
  • Due to Kars's defeat, Joseph basically avenges the Joestar family, the Zeppeli family, the hamon tribe, and and other lives that Kars directly and indirectly has caused.
  • He survives from his fight against Kars and his actions had the latter be away from Earth for good. Because of that, he completely neutralize the threat of the Piller Men.
  • He marries Suzi Q as soon as he's able to walk.
  • Joseph is not amused as he find out about Suzi Q fails to inform their friends and family that he's alive. Because of that, the married couple shows up at Joseph's own funeral in an ironic situation.

Post Battle Tendency/Pre events of Stardust Crusaders[]

  • Being genuinely respectful to Lisa Lisa after learning she is his mother.
  • Moves back to America with Suzi Q and Lisa Lisa.
  • Few years after Holly was born, he mourns Erina's eventual death and attends to her funeral along with his love ones.
  • He also mourns Speedwagon's death after learning the latter died from a heart attack.
  • He became a Real Estate Mogul.
  • Befriends with Avdol.
  • Gaining a stand Hermit Purple and learns more about stands and stand users.
  • Learns from Lisa Lisa that everyone within the Joestar bloodline has a star-shaped birthmark.
  • He plans to see his daughter Holly Kujo and his grandson Jotaro Kujo at Japan.

Stardust Crusaders[]

  • He greets and hugs Holly when he arrives at Japan.
  • Visited his grandson Jotaro Kujo in jail and explained to him what a stand is.
  • Has Avdol to get Jotaro out of jail since the latter already did his time there.
  • Scolded Jotaro for verbally abusing Holly, as well as telling her not let Jotaro mistreating her.
  • Warned Jotaro of DIO's return by showing him a picture of DIO taken by using Hermit Purple.
  • When Holly fell ill due to DIO's influence, Joseph led an expedition to Egypt to defeat DIO once and for all.
  • Allows Kakyoin and later Polnareff to join the group after he and Jotaro gets rid off DIO's flesh buds that was inside the former duo's respective heads.
  • Reassures Polnareff that he's not the culprit who assaulted and killed Sherry, Polnareff's younger sister.
  • Helped Avdol fake his death after he was wounded by J. Geil.
  • Forced to defeat the Empress stand user alone.
  • Bought Anne a plane ticket home so that she wouldn't endanger herself any further. This was shown in the anime.
  • Even though he defended Mannish Boy who was going to kill the group, it was because he thought he was just an innocent baby.
  • Tried to defeat Daniel J. D'Arby so that Polnareff can get his soul back.
  • He and Avdol defeats Mariah. Before that, he tried to redeem her.
  • Secretly helped Jotaro defeat Terence T. D'Arby by using his stand to tamper with the gaming console.
  • He vowed to kill DIO and to take back Jonathan's stolen body in honor and memory of his late grandmother, Erina Pendleton.
  • Warned Jotaro of DIO's ability to stop time before being killed by DIO. Thankfully, Jotaro was able to revive him.
  • He helps Jotaro place the remains of DIO's/Jonathan's body in the desert for the sun to break down once dawn arose. This officially closed the book on DIO's lasting influence within the Joestar bloodline.
  • Mourns the deaths of Avdol, Iggy, and Kakyoin.
  • He and Jotaro say their farewell to Polnareff as the Joestar duo head back to Japan to see the recovered Holly.

Diamond is Unbreakable[]

  • Traveled to Morioh to visit his illegitimate sonJosuke Higashikata.
  • While Josuke didn't accept Joseph as his father at first, they eventually warmed up to each other after Joseph saved the invisible baby, Shizuka, from drowning. He later on adopts the child and names her Shizuka Joestar.
  • (Manga Only): When he and Josuke approach a depressed and remorseful Yukako Yamagishi (who was trying to win Koichi Hirose's heart in a non-obsessive and non-twisted fashion this time), Joseph sympathizes with her and suggests to go visit the Cinderella Beauty Salon to enhance her appearance.
  • He accidently bumped into Koichi when he and Josuke rushed out of the Kame Yu Department stores to take care of Shizuka, which indirectly sent him flying into Yukako's arms, resulting with the both of them kissing and falling in love for real this time, despite her past actions.
  • Once Yoshikage Kira was defeated and sent off to his eternal damnation, Joseph would join the others in bidding Reimi and Arnold farewell as they ascend to Heaven.
  • In order to make up for his past mistakes and for not being there for Josuke, Joseph adopts Shizuka for good, raising her like his own daughter.
  • Forgave Josuke for stealing his wallet at the end.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He cheated on his wife with Tomoko Higashikata four years before Part 3 has started. While he visited Josuke and improved his relationship with Josuke and Tomoko, there's no sign he actually reformed from this and made amends with Suzi Q, making it too corrupting for him to be even Near Pure Good.
  • He is a massive jerk, acting rude and impolite to nearly everyone, even towards his grandmother Erina and mentor Lisa Lisa.
    • He joked about Erina and Speedwagon's relationship, which made the normally kind-hearted Erina become angry and beat him. He never does this again.
    • He also peeped at Lisa Lisa, who (unbeknownst to him at the time) was actually his own mother. It’s also worth noting that even after learning that Lisa Lisa was his mother, he does not say anything about when he had peeped on her (although it is possible that she had already known considering how quick he arrived to save her from Esidisi). At least in Part 2 anime epilouge, it's implied that Joseph did regret doing that.
  • Throughout Part 2, Joseph is a womanizing hothead who had some problems controlling his emotions. While Joseph mellows out by Part 3, his hotheadedness still pops up now and then.
  • While Joseph is honorable, he also can be a cheater who isn't afraid to bend the rules to win. To be fair, a lot of his enemies don't play fair either such as Kars.
  • When Joseph encounters Stratzio at the bridge, the former didn't take the latter's threats to kill an innocent woman seriously til the last minute. While he did ultimately saved her, that was very reckless of him.
  • Joseph forced Iggy to join the Joestar Group in the second half of Part 3; even if having Iggy as an ally was necessary. Because of that, Iggy was very reluctant to help out the group til he encountered Pet Shop in the manga and TV anime. The OVA version, Iggy was far more reluctant to help out til his final moments of saving Polnareff from Vanilla Ice. At best, Iggy is a hero by proxy.
  • Joseph can be insensitive sometimes, such as when he pretended to be DIO after being revived to prank Jotaro who had just lost several friends, and if his response to hearing DIO's name in future parts is anything to go by, he could very well have PTSD. This is worse considering how Joseph was barely able to hold his emotions after the death of Kakyoin.
