Jonathan "Johnny" Joestar is the main protagonist of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run. He is the alternate universe counterpart of Jonathan Joestar. Unlike the selfless and compassionate Jonathan, Johnny is abrasive, selfish and cynical, though he does improve as the story goes on.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

  • Never wished to win the Steel Ball Run race, but rather joined to learn the spin from Gyro in exchange for aiding him in his own mission.
  • His connection with Gyro is one of his main redeeming qualities through out the entire story and frequently shows in his actions and behaviors. This manifests as:
    • Bonding with Gyro over the course of the story, with both Gyro and Johnny learning from each other and growing as people.
    • Johnny willingly giving up parts of the Holy Corpse they collected throughout the race to save Gyro's life during several parts of the story.
    • Felt completely devastated and and lost after Gyro was murdered by Funny Valentine.
  • Upon learning that the President of the United States, Funny Valentine, has the corpse parts and intends to assemble them, Johnny and Gyro both set off to stop him. While the US would have become a Utopia should he have succeeded, the rest of the world would be reduced to hell as a result of it.
  • Is incredibly sympathetic and tragic due to him blaming himself for the death of his brother, and became incredibly guilt ridden even when the death was at worst an indirect result of him.
    • This is also the crux of the story of Steel Ball Run in general, as it's about Johnny learning to forgive himself for his past actions with his brother and gain hope and power again in his life.
  • Though Funny Valentine tried to trick Johnny into letting him go and handing over the corpse parts in exchange for a new Gyro, Johnny ultimately refused after testing Valentine by throwing him a gun to demonstrate his commitment to letting Johnny go.
  • Forgave his father for their past transgressions after his father came to see him at the end of the race.
  • Sealed away the corpse parts so that nobody could ever use them again.
  • Didn't feel bad when he lost the Steel Ball Run and went on to start a family with Rina Higashikata.
  • Although this deed was a result of one of his actions that makes him inconsistent, he saves his son from the stone disease by transferring it to himself and obtaining it in the process, arguably redeeming him.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • Even if he had a tragic past, he was a playboy obsessed in his success of horse racing before the accident costed his career.
  • Johnny starts off the story very selfish and very abrasive, joining the race for selfish reasons and not caring about anyone other than himself making him an anti-hero unlike the original Jonathan. Though these traits are toned down by the end of the story, Johnny never truly grows out of them.
  • During the final battle against Funny Valentine, Johnny kept shooting his nail bullets at Valentine, even though D4C Love Train ensured those bullets would be sent to other parts of the world to kill other people instead. When Johnny was informed of this, he didn't show any true remorse for killing innocent people (albeit by accident).
  • In JoJolion, it's revealed Johnny broke his promise to keep the parts sealed away in order to send his wife's disease to someone else. When his son caught the disease, Johnny was horrified and used his stand to take the disease for himself. While Johnny did allow himself to pay the price by choosing to be crushed by a boulder, this final act proves that Johnny is far from incorruptible.

Trivia[]

  • Johnny Joestar is the only version of Jonathan Joestar to be Inconsistently Admirable and the only one to have corrupting qualities.
