~ John Marston reflects on how his life of crime with Dutch Van Der Linde has changed to Arthur Morgan. |
John Marston Sr. (1873-1911) is the main protagonist of the 2010 action-adventure game Red Dead Redemption and one of the two deuteragonists (alongside Dutch van der Linde) of its 2018 prequel Red Dead Redemption 2.
John was raised into Dutch's gang, and would later leave that life after a spiral of events caused the gang to fall apart. He is a former outlaw determined to make amends for his past by tracking down and killing the other members of his gang, to rescue his family who is kidnapped by the government.
He is performed and voiced by Rob Wiethoff.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
Red Dead Redemption 2[]
- He helped Dutch in several of his plans, being extremely loyal to his leader until his downfall.
- While initially a neglectful father and boyfriend to Jack and Abigail, respectively, that changed when Jack was kidnapped and he, along with the rest of the gang, came to his rescue. He is shown to be the most determined to save his child, which even impresses Arthur himself.
- He protected Abigail and Jack when the O'Driscolls attacked the gang's camp.
- He helped Arthur in his attempt to help the Wapiti tribe in the war against the United States Army.
- When the gang was finally disbanded, he ran away with his entire family in order to start a new life elsewhere as normal people.
- He protected his son when a trio of thieves came to confront him.
- He helped the Pronghorn Ranch by taking down the entire Lamarie gang, who had threatened to kill them.
- After realizing that his actions had ultimately alienated his family from him, John slowly began to shed his outlaw ways and began to make a more honest living, even starting a ranch just like his wife wanted. This made him finally reconcile with his family and be able to live a normal life after so many years.
- Along with Charles Smith, saved Uncle's life from being brutally murdered by the Skinner Brothers.
- He finally finished Micah Bell, the traitor of the Dutch gang, once and for all avenging Arthur and all the members of the gang who had fallen.
Red Dead Redemption[]
- Though out of obligation rather than desire, John helps Edgar Ross round up three gang members of Dutch's gang, Bill Williamson, Javier Escuella, and Dutch Van Der Linde.
- He help the McFarlane family with their farm problems.
- He helped Leigh Johnson stop several criminals who were wreaking havoc on Armadillo.
- Saved several women from being brutally murdered by Bill's gang.
- He saved the life of Nigel West Dickens from being murdered by a gang, then helped him sell his tonics so that he would help him in the assault on Fort Mercer.
- He saved Irish from being killed by Welsh and French.
- Saved Bonnie McFarlane from almost being killed by Bill's gang.
- He saved Shaky from being murdered by his former associates at Irish's request to help him with the Gatling gun ammunition in the assault on Fort Mercer.
- Along with Johnson and his men, Seth Briars, Dickens and Irish successfully raid Bill's lair at Fort Mercer and wipe out his entire gang, although he was unable to catch Bill in the process.
- Saved Luisa Fortuna from being assassinated by the Mexican army.
- Saved the life of a woman when she was held by a man in Chuparosa.
- He helped Luisa's younger sister escape from Nuevo Paraíso to Yucatan to avoid being captured by the Mexican army.
- He saved the life of Abraham Reyes from being murdered by the Mexican army and then took him to where Luisa was.
- Help Reyes' rebel group to put an end to the tyrannical government of Agustin Allende in the state of Nuevo Paraiso.
- He manages to finish off both Bill and Javier.
- He got mad at Reyes for not remembering Fortuna after she died.
- He rescued Nastas when he was being severely tortured by Dutch's gang and then took him to Blackwater to recover from his injuries.
- He assisted law enforcement when Dutch's gang robbed the Blackwater bank, saving several people in the process.
- He helped Harold MacDougal escape from the Blackwater once Dutch's new gang started attacking them, saving his life.
- After catching his former leader, John shows sadness and regret over Dutch's death, showing that he still loved him despite all the bad things he had done.
- He tried to spend as much time with his family after it's all over.
- He took out several criminals who were trying to rob a train when he was doing his ranching activities with Uncle.
- He saved Jack's life from being killed by a bear and then took him home to recover.
- Despite being mostly hostile towards Uncle, he was willing to help him escape when the army came to kill him and was genuinely saddened by his death, showing that he cared about him.
- Realizing that the US Army had come to kill him, John makes a heroic sacrifice by sending his family out of their home and then confronting the Army, taking out several of them before finally being gunned down, finally honoring the legacy of his best friend Arthur. This is also the moment where John finally finds redemption after a long life as a criminal.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He is very anti-heroic and lethal. He has no problem killing anyone who gets in his way, although in general many of his victims deserve it.
- He has numerous jerk moments that are far too recurring for him to be Near Pure Good.
- His refusal to let go of the past is what ultimately causes the events of Red Dead Redemption. Despite Abigail's pleas not to, John kills Micah Bell to avenge Arthur. This leads the B.O.I to discover his location and eventually bring the downfall of the Marston Family:
- Uncle and John were both killed during the Army's raid of Beecher's Hope.
- Abigail would die years later of unknown causes, most likely due to the depression of having lost her husband.
- Jack was so consumed with vengeance for his family, he adopted the outlaw lifestyle to kill Edgar Ross, which ultimately nullified Arthur and John's intentions to protect Jack from becoming an outlaw like them.
