Joseph "Joe" Swanson is a major character in the adult animated television series Family Guy, being on of Peter Griffin's three best friends. He is a muscular police officer bound to a wheelchair after getting injured in a confrontation with Bobby Briggs.

He is voiced by Patrick Warburton.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

  • He stops many criminals such as Meg's abusive boyfriend, a bank robber, and the drug lord Bobby Briggs, the one who got him crippled in the first place.
  • Although he did kill Briggs, he clarified even after the fact he only meant to mirror the crippling, not kill him.
  • In the past, he didn't arrest a thief after finding out that the thief was a homeless man providing for his family, instead helping him.
  • He takes on a group of armed midgets all by himself.
  • He pretended to fall out of his wheelchair to help him and his friends escape from their wrongful imprisonment at Dungaree County Work Camp. Later, he would help stop the corrupt Sheriff Nichols for abusing his authority and shoot him in the leg while giving him a lesson on how he should be an honorable officer who took an oath.
  • Him and Peter helped stop Quagmire from an auto-asphyxiation suicide.
  • Though he was initially reluctant due to believing that murder is wrong, he still helps Quagmire kill his sister's abusive husband, Jeffery Fecalman, when left with no other choice.
  • He tried to reason with Meg after the latter kidnapped him instead of being mad at her, then forgives her afterwards.
  • When his friends fell into the Niagara Falls to stop him from his suicide, he found purpose in life again by climbing them to safety.
  • He rescued Quagmire from his abusive girlfriend who turned him into a sex slave by letting her steal his gun and tricking her by it being empty.
  • Under the alias of David Chicago, he writes a book to inspire kids with disabilities to find courage in themselves.
  • Unlike everyone else on the show who treats Meg horribly, he’s one of those people who treat her with some decency. He even forgave her after kidnapping her and having his wife wrongfully imprisoned.
  • Even though he's their friend and has held up if not to the point of arresting them on some occasions, such as Lois for shoplifting, Meg, and even Glenn Quagmire for sleeping with an underage girl, it is ultimately just him doing his job as an officer of law enforcement. When Peter made a stupid stunt of driving his car over a bunch of other cars on a ramp. He revoked his license, despite him getting ticked off when Peter was trying to make him reach for his license.
  • Thanks to being admirable despite being crippled and having less equipment, he stands out enough.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • Like most of the characters in the show, he is on & off with some questionable acts such as assisting Peter Griffin's crimes, helping Peter light Meg's beanie on fire and tricking Quagmire into having sex with him.
  • He is incredibly wrathful and very prone to anger outbursts in which he can easily hurt those who are around them, including his family and close friends.
  • In the episode, "Believe It Or Not Joe's Walking On Air", when he got a pair of new legs so he could walk. He had let it go to his head, and was gonna dump his friends for cooler friends, then beat all of them up when they tried to break his legs, if not for Bonnie stopping him, and shooting his legs.
  • He cheated on his wife with another female cop, causing a strike in their already-failing marriage.
  • In recent seasons, there are several times where he behaves arrogantly and obnoxiously while talking to his friends about certain stuff.
