Jin Sakai, also known as Lord Sakai or The Ghost, is the titular main protagonist of the 2020 video game Ghost of Tsushima. He is the son of Kazumasa Sakai and the nephew of Lord Shimura, who after the Mongol's attack on the titular Tushima, becomes the leader of a group set on stopping the Mongols and ending their tyranny.

He is voiced by Daisuke Tsuji in the English Version, and by Kazuya Nakai in the Japanese Dub.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

  • He feels great remorse for not being able to save his father from Tenzo as a child despite him literally being unable to do anything to stop Tenzo.
  • He saved a peasant and his child when they were about to get killed by a Mongol soldier.
  • He helps his allies in their personal issues and helps them in saving people, such as:
    • Helping Sensei Ishikawa in trying to stop his former student Tomoe, who was with the Mongols, and saving a village that was threatened by the Mongols. He also forgave Tomoe after finding out she was forced to kill people because the Mongols threatened to kill her if Tashe didn't, and even helping her in saving another village with Ishikawa and allowing Tomoe to leave Tsushima.
    • Helping Masako in her revenge path against Hana and her conspirators and stopping her from killing Jushin in a fit of rage. He also comforted Masako when she questioned if she was able to move on.
    • Helped in saving the Monk's temple twice and saved countless people with the help of Norio from the Mongols, and even comforted him after the loss of his brother and him being rejected by other monks.
    • He stopped Altan, the Black Wolf, and the Mamushi brothers with the help of Yuna, ending the latter two's slavery.
  • He constantly helps civilians everywhere across Tsushima, saving countless lives in the process, even saving entire villages at times.
  • Jin rescued Taka alongside Yuna from one of the Mongols' fortresses.
  • He helped Ryuzo in freeing several Straw Hats that were imprisoned and helped him in finding food for Ryuzo's group.
  • He tried to convince Ryuzo not to fight him and told him that they could stop the Mongols together, although he refused.
  • He rescued Lord Shimura from the Mongols and retook Castle Kaneda.
  • He stopped the Mongols from destroying the foods crops in Tsushima and thus stopped Tsushima from going through starvation.
  • Jin helped his uncle in calling help from the shogun so he would allow soldiers to help in saving Tsushima.
  • He saved the monks that were in a village and even made a strategic defense with Norio to protect the civilians of the village.
  • He protected Noriko and the Sakai temple when a group of Ronins tried to attack them.
  • He took care of Noriko during her last days alive, and even helped her in finding what she thought was her mother and comforted her in her final moments before burying her next to Noriko's mother's grave.
  • He calls out Lord Shimura for being willing to let their own people’s lives be put in jeopardy if it means winning against the Mongols “honourably.”
  • While whether or not he did what was completely right is questionable, he still killed Ryuzo and the Mongols occupating Castle Shimura, which saved dozens of people since Lord Shimura was going to do an attack that would cause a lot of causalities.
  • When Lord Shimura told him to blame Yuna for his actions because the shogun would want someone to get executed for the brutal murders of the Mongols, Jin refused to listen to his uncle and took the blame for her.
  • He told Yuna to reunite all his allies in order to create a great attack against the Khan.
  • He killed the Khan and stopped the Mongols from conquering Japan, without a doubt saving thousands of lives in the process.
  • If Jin decides to spare Lord Shimura, he will tell his uncle that while he may have no honor, he will not kill his family no matter what. If he does, he will honor Lord Shimura.
  • He refused to kill Tenzo, his father's killer, and not only forgave him, but also saved his life from the Eagle.
  • He stopped the Eagle and saved Tsushima and Iki Island.
  • He made a haiku for his father and accepted his death and put his past behind him.
  • Despite his ruthlessness and ends-justify-the-means mentality, he still has limits, such as not killing innocent civilians or putting them in danger.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He's way too lethal to qualify as Near Pure Good, not only does he kill his enemies and is obsessed with vengeance, but also kills them in some of the most brutal ways possible, such as decapitating them, cutting their limbs off, and burning them alive. This even becomes worse in Act 2, where he starts killing people with deadly poison and even made a group of Mongols drink said poison, which caused them to choke to death with their own blood, something which shocks Lord Shimura.
  • Jin has a few moments when he acts like a jerk towards his allies, such as telling Ishikawa that he should know better because of his age and believing that just because he's more experienced that he can't make mistakes himself or saying that he helped Tsushima while his uncle did nothing when he refused to allow him to kill the mongols and stop countless deaths because it would be against the samurai code. Though to be fair, while his tone was harsh with them, his points were fair, as Ishikawa and Shimura’s decisions either could have had, or did have consequences.
  • Jin taunts his enemies on multiple occasions, to the point that he's almost sadistic about it, such as saying to Khotun Khan that he would be forgotten after he said to Jin in his final moments that they would be remembered forever. However, the Khan absolutely deserved it.
  • He's prideful of himself, as he refuses to take blame for several of his mistakes and even arrogantly told Lord Shimura that he saved Tsushima while his uncle did nothing. Although to be fair, considering Jin went the extra mile to save as many people of the island as possible, travelling across the island helping wherever while his uncle stayed at his castle, Jin’s points are well-founded.
