“ | Finally, everything is sorted out, more or less. I mean, I don't want to say we're going to live happily ever after or anything like that, but life is certainly going to get easier. | „ |
~ Jimmy's final narration after defeating his archenemy, Gary Smith. |
“ | I'm not the one who's funny. You know what's funny? You. You're a joke, you old creep. You and your stuck-up, lame ass school, with its bullies, sex-pest teachers...this place is a dump, and you're a big-nosed freak! This school rewards losers and bullies - I just stand up to them! | „ |
~ Jimmy standing up to Dr. Crabblesnitch. |
James "Jimmy" Hopkins is the main protagonist of the 2006 video game Bully. A fifteen-year-old teenager, he was dumped at Bullworth Academy, the alleged worst boarding school in the country, by his mother and new step-father.
While initially portrayed as a stereotypical troublemaker, he turns out to be a misunderstood harmonizer who decides to go out of his way to stop the school's bullying problems and stand up to its corrupt teachers. He later undergoes a redemption when he riles together all of the school's cliques against his archenemy Gary Smith, a megalomaniac who attempted to turn the student body against itself and overthrow the principal.
He was voiced by musician Gerry Rosenthal.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
- Shows love and concern for his mother despite her neglecting Jimmy and leaving him to his own devices at the worst school in the country, which -according to him-, has an alumni consisting of "nothing but arms dealers, serial killers and corporate lawyers".
- Voluntarily decides to stand up to Bullworth Academy's antagonistic students and corrupt teachers out of a genuine desire to do good and protect students who are unable to do so themselves.
- Helps Eunice get her chocolates back after Constantinos stole them from her.
- Helps Algie to get him into the library by protecting him from the Bullies, although this was mostly in order to gain money from him. Despite this, Algie thanked him and realized he wasn't the rude troublemaker that almost everyone else was portraying him as.
- Saves Bucky from the Bullies and protects him while Bucky is getting needs for his science project.
- Takes Beatrice's lab notes and diary back, which is stolen by Mandy and Mr. Hattrick respectively.
- Protects Earnest Jones from the Jocks during his school presidential speech.
- Takes Melvin's four character sheets back from the Bullies.
- Upon fighting Russell Northrop and defeating him, he gives him a helping hand and calls him to be his friend, telling him to stop bullying the kids and be a good man instead of taunting and berating him.
- Takes Mr. Galloway's three Scotch bottles around the school and gives them to Ms. Philips, in order to not make the school staff see them, and also to prevent Mr. Hattrick from getting him fired.
- Stops Russell from attacking the local store owner, Mr. Oh.
- Helps the Hobo, who is constantly tormented by the Townies.
- Helps Miss Peters by dressing up as the Nutcracker and playing the xylophone for the holiday season pageant.
- Knocks Constantinos off in order to take the comic book back that is stolen by him, and brings it back to the owner Zack Owens.
- Helps Johnny Vincent to see if his girlfriend, Lola, was cheating on him, which turned out to be true.
- Searches for Algie when Earnest worries about him whether Johnny is going to beat him.
- Saves the nerd Cornelius from the greasers Norton Williams and Vance Medici.
- Fights Johnny Vincent and the Greasers in order to prove he was tougher so the Greasers would quit bullying weaker kids.
- Picked a fight with the Jocks, the biggest bullies on campus, because they were bullying Pete.
- After defeating Earnest, he helps him to get on his feet and befriends him instead of attacking him any further or insulting him, despite the former's questionable actions, such as urging Jimmy to take Mandy's inappropriate photos.
- Defends the Nerds from the Jocks, rescuing Fatty and Bucky and defending their observatory from Jocks' attack.
- Makes up for his offense by helping Mandy tagging over the inappropriate posters of her around the town, which are hanged by the Nerds.
- Helps Ms. Philips getting her dress, perfume and pearl necklace.
- Rescues Mr. Galloway from the Asylum, where he was tortured, after Mr. Hattrick guilt-tripped him into enrolling himself there.
- Helps Mr. Galloway expose that Mr. Hattrick is selling advance copies of his tests to the rich students. By getting Mr. Hattrick fired, this brought hope back to Mr. Galloway and motivated him to stop drinking alcohol.
- Clears the library from twenty rats, which are released by Townies through the proxy of Gary.
- Saves Kirby, Juri and Mandy from the gymnasium set to fire by Gurney -who is tasked by Gary-, puts out fires there.
- Rescues Johnny Vincent, who is trapped by the actions of Townies and Gary- from the Asylum.
- Helps Zoe getting revenge on Mr. Burton, who sexually harassed Zoe and caused her to be expelled from the academy.
- Searches for who was responsible for stealing the Preppies' trophies and captures evidence of it.
- Fights Edgar Munsen in order to make him confess about the incidents in the academy, and redeeming him to work together to defeat Gary Smith.
- Exposes Mr. Burton's pedophilic deeds and gets him fired from the academy while getting Zoe Taylor, who is a victim of Mr. Burton's actions, re-enrolled at the academy.
- During the riots, he tries to calm the clique leaders down peacefully and save them from Gary's manipulation, only resorting to violence when the leaders hazardously attack Jimmy.
- Ultimately fulfills his promise to ending the despotic situation of Bullworth Academy by defeating Gary Smith, pacifying all of the cliques and their feud with each other.
- Although he is presented as an On & Off anti-hero throughout the whole storyline, he ultimately redeems himself after the defeat of Gary Smith, fulfilling his primary aim of purging Bullworth Academy from bullying, displaying clear remorse for his past crimes (particularly some of the shameful ones of stealing panties from girls' dorm for Mr. Burton and violating Mandy's privacy), and making up for all of them.
- Furthermore, it is confirmed by Word of God that Jimmy would grow up to be a respectable, law-abiding member of society and not a criminal, as he "is not that level of degenerate" and "was an unpleasant soul, but he had a heart."
- Although he could easily become the Head Boy for his heroic deeds, he requests Dr. Crabblesnitch to make Pete the Head Boy instead, since Jimmy thinks he deserves it.
- In the errand missions, he helps multiple students and townsfolk in various occasions by:
- Protecting Algie, Christy, Miss Abby and Christy by escorting them to the library, girls' dorm, the Tenements and In & Out Motel respectively.
- Delivering fast foods for Mr. Huntingdon, a package to another worker at the Power Plant for Mr. Salvatore, and to a guy near the Police Station for Mr. Castillo.
- Collecting crabs for Mr. Martin's restaurant, and collecting a package for Mr. Svenson.
- Recovering Karen's teddy bear back from Wade Martin, and Tobias' bike from Omar Romero.
- Picking six flowers for Mrs. Lisburn to put on her late husband's grave, and photographing four different attractions for Mr. Sullivan.
- Clearing two smoking Greasers off from the roof of the Oil Spill gas station for Officer Ivanovich.
- Finding some medication for Handy, and salvaging McInnis' lost cargo.
- Finding Algie's lost jacket, and the lost dogs of Dr. Bambillo and Bethany Jones.
- Exposing Officer Williams, who accepts bribes, by taking pictures of him for Officer Monson, and Mr. Buckingham's wife, who cheats on him, by taking photos of her.
- Taking a picture of a Greaser or Townie tagging a wall, helping Officer Ivanovich.
- Putting out the fires and clearing the rats in the Tenements for Officer Morrison, and clearing the rats at the docks for Mr. Buckingham.
- Brings the two escapee patients Clint and Otto back to the Asylum for Gregory.
- Giving Vance and Max toilet papers when they need.
- While there are some in-game references to Manhunt and the 3D/HD universes of Grand Theft Auto (which could imply he would have to compete with the Admirable Standards of these franchises), not only is the connection between the games too vague, but also Jimmy has far lower resources than any Grand Theft Auto and Manhunt hero due to being a regular 15-year-old with practically nothing else in comparison.
- While it may seem like he bullies others for fun at first, he only does this to people who have hurt others in some way. Bullying and assaulting innocent students, as well as many of the other crimes in the game, are also completely up to the player's discretion, as they're never mandatory in the main story and are only in a free roam state, thus making those non-canon extensively.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- While being less prevalent as the story progresses, he can be a jerk sometimes, especially towards Pete, whom he often teases or outright ignores, and the Nerds, whom he usually talks down to (except for Beatrice).
- Although many of his heroic deeds were out of a genuine desire to do good, some of them, particularly in errands, were more motivated by money, such as when he forced Algie to pay him $5 instead of $2 for protecting him from bullies.
- Although it's never explicitly stated, it's heavily implied that Edna committed date rape against Dr. Watts. Given Jimmy assisted her by stealing some sedatives so that Edna could place them in Dr. Watts' coffee, this makes him an accomplice, which is far too corrupting for NPG, regardless of whether Jimmy felt remorse for it.
Trivia[]
- He is the youngest Inconsistently Admirable character in all of Rockstar's games.
- He's moved back and forth between Inconsistently Admirable and Near Pure Good. For the longest time, he was considered IA, until it was decided he largely redeemed himself from his villainy and was approved NPG. However, once it was pointed out that Jimmy assisted in an implied date rape, he was removed and reapproved IA.
