I've killed so many people I've lost count. I can't come back from this. I'm a monster. I can feel the anger inside me. But I am still, somewhere inside me, more than that. Better than that.
~ Jason's final line in the game (if he chooses to save his friends).

Jason Brody is the main protagonist of the video game Far Cry 3. He’s a 27-year-old American who was kidnapped and held for ransom by Vaas and his army of pirates during a vacation on the Rook Islands with his brother and friends.

After managing to escape capture, he trained to become a Rakyat Warrior, saved all of his friends, and killed Vaas and his employer Hoyt.

He was voiced by Gianpaolo Venuta, who also provided his likeness for Jason through motion capture.

His Good Rankings[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

  • When his brother Grant was fatally shot in the neck by Vaas, Jason tried to stop the bleeding and save his life, despite there being no chance of survival.
  • When he killed a Pirate in self-defense while fleeing from Vaas, he physically recoiled and felt guilt for taking a human life.
  • After being rescued by Dennis, Jason accepted his help and trained to become a warrior of the Rakyat, a local resistance group rebelling against Vaas’ pirates to reclaim control of the island.
  • One way Jason assists the Rakyat is by climbing dozens of radio towers around the open world and repairing them so the villages on the island can communicate with each other.
  • Jason also helps the natives of the islands during various side quests, including saving a sex-trafficked woman from her abuser, collecting and returning lost items, saving a teenage girl from wild animals, and delivering medical supplies.
  • When he learned that his friend Daisy had come down with a potentially fatal disease, he journeyed into an underground cave and collected mushrooms needed for Dr. Earnhardt to synthesize a cure, saving her life.
  • He went on various dangerous fetch quests for Buck, despite hating the man’s guts and wanting to kill him, in order to achieve the ancient knife he desired in exchange for his friend Keith’s freedom.
  • When Buck broke his promise and didn’t free Keith (who he bought from the pirates to use as a sex slave), Jason killed him. Upon returning Keith to the rest of their friends, Jason promised him not to bring up what he experienced to the others.
  • Jason worked with a former CIA operative, Willis Huntley, to destroy several of the Pirates’ operations, including burning a weed field and sabotaging their drug sales.
  • When he was kidnapped and almost killed, alongside his girlfriend Lisa, Jason risked his life and almost died to save her, navigating a burning and collapsing building to get to her, and fighting off several pursuing pirates with a grenade launcher.
  • After rescuing his friends, he tried to convince them to leave the island without him, so they would be safe and he could finish off Hoyt without having to fear for their safety.
  • When his friend Ollie, whom he rescued from being trafficked as well, refused to leave Jason’s side, Jason convinced him to leave with the others for his own safety.
  • When he was motivated by sadism and revenge to kill Hoyt, he snapped back to reality upon realizing his little brother Riley was still alive and being held captive on the island.
  • He saved Riley’s life and willingly gave up his cover as a member of Hoyt’s private militia to do so.
  • Jason killed both Vaas and Hoyt, effectively dismantling their entire human trafficking operation and freeing the residents of the islands from their tyranny. This is especially true if the player claims all of the pirate’s outposts around the map.
  • In the “Save Your Friends” Ending, Jason rejects Rakyat leader Citra’s romantic advances, and escapes the island with his friends. During his final monologue, he claims that he has no idea how he can come back from being the monster he’s become, but he hopes there’s still some good deep down inside of him.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He’s a very lethal and sadistic anti-hero. The story catalogs his descent from a timid and unassuming man to a vengeful and arrogant warrior. There are several times in the game’s story where he shows enjoyment out of killing his enemies, such as making quips and one-liners during intense firefights and bragging about doing so to his friends, who are in disbelief at how he can enjoy taking so many lives, even if many were in self-defense.
  • As he grows more arrogant over the course of the story, he pushes away his friends and has difficulty empathizing with them or showing much emotion at all. When he rescues Lisa and informs her of Grant’s death, she’s heartbroken and attempts to comfort Jason, only for Jason to show no emotion aside from gloating about all the people he killed while rescuing her.
  • It could be argued many of Jason’s heroic acts are motivated by selfishness. Almost every side quest rewards Jason in some way, whether with money or better weapons.
  • While Jason did care for his friends and wanted them to leave the island for their own safety, the only reason he chose to stay behind was because he enjoyed the thrill of killing that the island brought him and wanted revenge against Hoyt.
  • When he learned that his little brother Riley was still alive, Jason tortured him for information. Although, he didn’t want to do this but had to in order to remain undercover, and felt disgusted at what he did afterward.
  • In the game’s second ending, the “Join Citra” Ending, Jason willingly kills all of his friends and joins Citra as her lover. He shows no remorse or guilt for killing his friends and (rightfully) gets what’s coming to him when Citra kills him during a sacrificial ceremony after he has sex with her.
