My name is Sergeant James Heller, and I will destroy Alex Mercer.
~ James Heller.
Enough of your f-cking weird, f-cking rambling sh-t! Give me my daughter!
~ Heller to Alex Mercer at Penn Station.

James Heller is the main protagonist of the 2012 video game Prototype 2. He is a former United States Marine Sergeant who swore vengeance on Alex Mercer after finding his family dead in his home in New York City. Following his infection by Mercer during an attempted suicide mission against him, he set out into the city to uncover the truth behind Mercer, the military group Blackwatch, and the second outbreak of the Blacklight virus.

He was voiced by Cornell Womack.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

  • When Heller came home to find his family killed, he volunteered to take part in patrols so that he could avenge his family by killing Mercer.
  • After his APC was hit and his squadmates were killed, he continuously charged Mercer with a combat knife, even as it proved fruitless time and time again.
  • While doubting Mercer’s claims about Blackwatch and GENTEK being behind the outbreak, he nonetheless agrees to help bring them down, as the two groups were still involved in unethical biological experiments.
  • Heller restored Father Guerra’s faith in bringing down Blackwatch by sabotaging a field test of Infected specimens in a heavily populated area.
  • Using his combat and shapeshifting abilities, and with the help of Guerra and later Dana Mercer, Alex’s sister, Heller sabotaged, and put an end to, many of Blackwatch and GENTEK’s experiments and projects, including Project Orion, a plan to create a new breed of super soldiers, and Project New Templar, whose purpose was to create a virus that would sterilize America’s lower classes and immigrants, all while simultaneously disrupting Mercer’s own plans with the Blacklight virus and the Evolved.
  • He defeated many of Mercer’s Evolved lieutenants, such as Keith Gallagher, Anton Koenig, Roland, Harry Gutierrez, and more.
  • When it turned out that Mercer had tainted the Whitelight cure with his blood, he sabotaged the release of it to prevent the Blacklight virus from spreading even further, and the creation of more Evolved.
  • When Mercer killed Father Guerra, Heller sank to his knees and mourned the death of his friend.
  • When Dana told him that his daughter Amaya was possibly alive in the Red Zone, he expressed a desire to go there immediately to try and look for her.
  • He put a stop to Blackwatch's Project Firehawk before they could destroy the city.
  • He asked Dana to look after Amaya in case he didn’t make it back alive, so that she would not grow up without a parental figure.
  • During Heller’s second attempt to kill Colonel Douglas Rooks, he stopped himself from doing so after hearing him talk to his own wife and daughter on the phone.
  • When Amaya was kidnapped by Sabrina Galloway, one of Alex’s enforcers, he traveled to Penn Station to confront him, and rejected Mercer’s plans to turn humanity into an Evolved superorganism to “save” the world, demanding the latter to “give [him his] daughter.”
  • He ultimately avenged his wife Colette, and saved New York, and the world, by defeating and consuming Alex Mercer, and rescued Amaya and Dana in a bank vault.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • Heller is too lethal, often killing his enemies in a particularly brutal fashion, though many of them arguably deserved it, or were at the very least in self defense.
    • It should also be noted that he appears to dislike killing civilians and Marines, as when he consumes either one of them during gameplay, he scoops them up quickly to give them a fast and painless death.
  • He is often wrathful, such as when trying to access a Blackwatch computer, where he continuously grew frustrated with each failed attempt, and when confronting Mercer towards the end, where he rather angrily told him to give Amaya back.
  • He can be jerkish at times, often insulting his enemies during combat, as an example.
