~ Homura Akemi, as she swears her oath to protect Madoka.
Homura Akemi (暁美ほむら Akemi Homura) is one of the main protagonists of the Puella Magi Madoka Magica franchise. She first appeared as a mysterious magical girl in Madoka Kaname's nightmare as she fought Walpurgisnacht. Her magic powers allow her to manipulate time. Her goal is to prevent Madoka from making a contract with Kyubey. As the story progresses, it is revealed that Homura is a time traveler and she has seen Madoka, Sayaka, Mami, and Kyoko die countless times whenever they make a contract with Kyubey.
She is very strong-willed, always pushing forward and risking her life to protect Madoka and tried to prevent her from becoming a magical girl and restarting the timeline whenever she failed.
While Homura is not as admirable as Madoka, who rewrote universe where none of the magical girls will turn into witches at the cost of her own existence, she has less resource as she only has time manipulate magic and expert marksmanship while Madoka has godlike powers when she became a magical girl.
Past Timelines[]
After witnessing her friend Madoka’s and Mami’s death, she made a contract with Kyubey to become a magical girl and travel back in time to the day she first met Madoka in school.
She helps out Madoka and Mami fighting off witches.
After failing to defeat Walpurgisnacht, the most powerful witch, along with Madoka countless times, she restarts the timeline each time in an attempt to prevent her friend's near inevitable deaths, especially Madoka’s.
After learning the dark truth about witches and magical girls, she tries to inform her friends about it, but they deny it however.
She changed her goal from helping Madoka to preventing her from making a contract with Kyubey because she knew Madoka’s death would be inevitable if Madoka becomes a magical girl.
Present Timeline[]
She tried to stop Mami from fighting Charlotte, foreseeing that Mami would die trying to save Sayaka.
She saved Madoka and Sayaka from Charlotte.
She stopped Sayaka and Kyoko from fighting each other.
She went to the arcade where Kyoko was playing in the dancing machine. She informed her about Walpurgisnacht approaching to wreak havoc across Mitakihara and suggested Kyoko that they should make an alliance to defeat the witch.
She saved Sayaka’s soul gem, which is needed to keep magical girls’ physical body intact, after Madoka threw it off to a moving truck.
When Sayaka's soul gem is turning black, which would made her closer in becoming a witch, Homura offered her a grief seed to purify her soul gem.
She helped Kyoko escape from Oktavia, knowing that she cannot fight the witch while carrying Sayaka's body.
She escorted Madoka to safety as Kyoko sacrificed herself in an attempt to save Sayaka from her witch form.
After Mami, Sayaka, and Kyoko’s deaths, she decided to fight off Walpurgisnacht on her own.
After Madoka wished to rewrite the universe where none of the magical girls will turn into witches at the cost of her own existence, Homura fought off the new enemies called wraiths to honor Madoka’s wish.
Rebellion[]
She stopped Kyubey from changing reality to make magical girls doomed in becoming witches.
What Makes Her Inconsistent?[]
She had slowly become an anti-hero as she started to lose value of other magical girls' lives (except Madoka), she even had no qualms in taking Sayaka's life if the latter keeps dragging Madoka into any unnecessary danger.
In addition, most of her heroic deeds in recent timelines were done out of pragmatism in protecting Madoka, not so much for the sake of others. For example, she only stopped Sayaka and Kyoko from fighting each other so that Madoka would not have to make a contract with Kyubey.
Her relationship with Madoka also became more obsessively toxic as the series progress.
She is extremely blunt and dismissive of the other's feelings, even Madoka’s. She even suggested her to give up on trying to save Sayaka from the path of despair she'd visibly begun walking down. She doesn't react when Madoka gets understandably upset, despite being the one Homura wants to protect.
After so many failed timelines, she began to feel unsympathetic towards the many deaths of her fellow magical girls (except Madoka) that she refuse to tell them the truth about magical girls and witches and they have to find out the hard way.
In the movie Rebellion, she had fallen into villainy as she broke the Law of Cycles altogether, grabbing Madoka and pulling her out of the sky before her soul could be taken to rest. By having pulled her down, Homura elevates herself to the level of a devil and gains newfound powers to match. She then rewrote the current reality to keep Madoka just as she is: a sweet, innocent girl who won’t struggle with any hardships, disregarding whatever Madoka's feelings on the situation might be.
Another corrupting quality she displays in the movie is her assault on Bebe, who didn't pose any threat at all. Granted, she did do this with the intent of figuring out the oddities outside, but her form of interrogation was still extreme, which involved grabbing Bebe's neck and pinning her to a wall later on, causing Mami to intervene.
Trivia[]
She is the one of two Madoka Magica character, so far, to be Inconsistently Admirable, other being Sayaka Miki.
