~ Homer convincing Bart’s children to give Bart another chance
I am so smart, I am so smart, I am so smart, I am so smart, S-M-R-T, I mean S-M-A-R-T!
~ Homer's S-M-R-T song, comically exemplifying his dimwitted nature; one of his most famous quotes.

Homer Jay Simpson is the main protagonist of The Simpsons franchise. He is the absent minded but well-meaning patriarch of the Simpsons family.

He is voiced by Dan Castellaneta.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

  • He quit his dream job at the bowling alley and went back to his old job at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant in order to financially support his family. He even plastered pictures of Maggie around his office as a reminder of why he is staying at a job that he hates doing.
  • He made a speech to an audience of men and Bart about how women shouldn't be treated as objects, which brought most of the men and Princess Kashmir to tears.
  • After being fired from his job and attempting to commit suicide, he became the city safety supervisor and protested against the use of nuclear power for a period of time.
  • He stopped Bart from jumping Springfield Gorge and was willing to do it himself to keep Bart safe.
  • Stopped Abe from gambling away all of Bea's money at a casino.
  • He got rid of the illegal cable in his house after seeing how much it was upsetting Lisa.
  • Buys Lisa a pony to make up for how often he ignored her and takes a second job at the Kwik-E-Mart so he can afford to keep it, refusing to get rid of the pony even when it caused him to become sleep deprived.
  • He has repeatedly thwarted nuclear meltdowns at the Power Plant, such as pressing the correct button on the panel (albeit by accident) twice in "Homer Defined" or blocking a vent on an overloaded tank with his bulk in "King Size Homer", saving the lives of everyone in Springfield as a result.
  • He sold his ride on the duff blimp so he could enter Lisa into a beauty pageant and increase her self-esteem.
  • When the monorail went out of control, he stopped it by using one of the letters as an anchor, saving the lives of everyone on-board.
  • Rescued Barney from an avalanche.
  • Despite Burns offering him millions for Bobo, Homer refuses after seeing how much the bear means to Maggie.
  • Despite his mutual hatred of Patty and Selma, still saves them from losing their jobs for Marge's sake.
  • When Ned's home was destroyed in a hurricane Homer helped to rebuild it with everyone else. They didn't do a very good job of it but it still came from a well-intentioned place.
  • While working for Hank Scorpio, he greatly boosted the morale of all of the workers at Globex Corporation.
  • He willingly took the brunt of a reindeer attack in order to protect Bart.
  • Comforts Ned after Maude's death despite his hate for Ned.
  • When the orphans were about to place lit candles near a gas leak in Praiseland, Homer (and Ned) tackled them to save them and everyone else in the park from being blown up.
  • Teamed up with Ned to rescue the Springfield elementary students when they were trapped in school because of the snow.
  • Protected Mayor Quimby from the mob while acting as his bodyguard and put an end to Fat Tony selling rat's milk to Springfield Elementary.
  • Confessed to murder when it looked like he and Marge were both going to be executed (Which turned out to be part of a Fox reality TV show) and claimed she had nothing to do it so his wife would at least be saved and his kids got to grow up with a mother.
  • He became the vigilante known as Pie Man and threw a pie into the Rich Texan's face in order to cheer up
  • Lisa, who was humiliated at a pie tasting contest.
  • Adopted Plopper the pig as his pet and saved him from being killed on Krusty's orders.
  • Although he justifiably wanted to stay in Alaska instead of returning to Springfield to save everyone (considering almost everyone there had tried to kill him and his family), he ultimately returned to Springfield to save the rest of his family.
  • In The Simpsons Movie, he and Bart were able to throw the bomb out of the dome covering Springfield before it blew up, saving the lives of thousands.
  • Thwarted Marshall Goldman's plan to kill Grampa.
  • Saved Carl's family reputation.
  • Helped Turanga Leela and the Planet Express Crew kill off Bart's murderous creations.
  • When he became a paparazzo, he chose not to show the photos he took of the celebrities and their shame.
  • He agrees to stay late at Moe's over Christmas Eve to keep him company as Moe lost his mother on Christmas.
  • Buys an item from the Leftorium out of pity for Ned since he had a rough year financially.
  • While he did reject his mother after she asked for forgiveness, he didn't mean it as he not only made her a card to apologize, but when he found out she died, he felt extreme remorse for yelling at her.
  • In many later episodes (particularly starting with Season 30), he has began making efforts to be a better father and husband to his family, losing many of his jerkish traits to become a much nicer person and almost never strangling Bart.
  • While he presents as an antagonist in some Treehouse of Horror specials, none of these are fully canon, and it doesn't affect his mainline series.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • One of the main reasons why he is inconsistent is how often and harshly he mistreats his family members:
    • He can be a terrible father at times, mainly towards Bart, who he frequently chokes for doing or saying something wrong, rude, annoying or even not in line with beliefs in an infamous gag. While Bart can be extremely awful at times, Homer can go too far when it comes to disciplining him. This may be played for laughs, but it is still considered child abuse. Peter even calls him out on that even if he was hypocritical. Even after he tried to be a better father and almost ceased this habit, he never showed remorse for it.
    • He has a tendency to make inconsiderate comments about Lisa's ideals and beliefs.
    • He also tends to be neglectful towards Maggie, as he frequently forgets she even exists despite her being his youngest child.
    • He can be a pretty bad husband to Marge as well, forgetting anniversaries and leaving Marge to look after their kids while he is drinking at Moe's Tavern. He once even framed her for reckless driving.
    • He is sometimes really awful towards his father, most of the time forgetting to visit him at the Springfield Retirement Castle. While Abraham wasn't the best father himself, Homer's inconsiderate treatment of his father is downright horrendous at times.
  • He has an unhealthy hatred for his neighbor Ned Flanders, going so far as to write a song called "Everybody Hates Ned Flanders", which was a clear hate speech on the man yet became a massive hit nonetheless. Besides that, examples of this are when he sabotages Ned's store the Leftorium out of spite (but in the end, Homer saved his business by telling people about how he sells stuff for left handed people) and kicked Flanders out of his own bomb shelter because there was enough room for all but one Springfieldian. It eventually comes to the point where in "Hurricane Ned", Ned gets so fed up with all the negativity Homer's put him through that he starts to lash out at everyone in Springfield in a fit of rage and sends himself to a mental hospital. Though in the episode “Bull-e”, he became nicer to Ned, ultimately feeling bad for abusing his neighbor for so long (It's frequently implied that Homer actually likes Ned and is just annoyed by him).
    • And if that weren't enough, he's also the one at fault for the death of Ned's wife Maude, since he made the reckless choice to get shot with a T-shirt at the top of a grandstand (which could've put his own life in danger too) while getting distracted by a mere bobby pin, causing Maude to take the hit that was meant for Homer and fall off the grandstand to her death. While he does comfort Ned over her death, he didn't do so out of remorse for causing her death.
  • He also seems to have a problem with Bart's best friend Milhouse Van Houten for an unexplained reason; most likely his wimpy, geeky persona. He even called Milhouse a "sad, weird kid" when the boy accidentally kissed him while trying to kiss a girl.
  • He once tried to shoot Mr. Burns all because he kept forgetting his name. While Mr. Burns is a despicable human being, this was a really stupid reason to try and kill someone. Furthermore, he may have done it and pinned it on Maggie, his infant child (although this was likely a joke, especially since Burns had pointed out that Maggie actually did shoot him when he tried to take a lollipop from her).
    • What makes this hypocritcal of Homer is that he forgets Burns's name at times.
  • He is a homophobe as he rejected John to be at side of Bart, fearing it will be a bad influence to him.
  • The whole reason Springfield was under a dome in the first place was because Homer thought it was a good idea to put a giant silo full of pig crap into the Springfield Lake, causing Springfield to become the most polluted city in Northern America (though he did end up saving the city at the climax of the movie), just so he could get free donuts at Lard Lad's quicker instead of waiting in line to drop the silo off at the Hazardous Waste Treatment Center, which, had he done this at the start, wouldn't have caused all this to happen.
  • He and his friends drove drunk and messed up Springfield Elementary, causing Bart and his friends to be forced to do labor, which Homer showed no remorse over.
  • Showed no concern for Bart when Sideshow Bob sent Bart threatening letters saying he will kill him and is glad the notes were not for him, and even wrote a threatening letter himself to Bart just for writing "WIDE LOAD" on his butt.
  • His stupidity drove Frank Grimes into madness. He tried to drink sulfuric acid, causing Grimes knock it out of his hands and into the wall, then threw him under the bus by telling Mr. Burns that Grimes destroyed the wall without pointing out the fact it was accidental and he did it to save Homer's life. This angered Grimes so much that he was driven insane and eventually committed suicide (which, by the way, Homer could have easily stopped him from doing and chose not to even after Grimes saved his life earlier), leading to his son, Frank Grimes Jr. becoming a villain and trying to kill him. While none of this was intentional on Homer's part, he still shows no remorse for it and even fell asleep at Grimes' funeral.
  • There are times when his obsession with beer causes problems for others. One such example is when he goes to Moe’s Tavern to watch the Springfield Isotopes win the pennant and celebrates their victory by taking his friends on a drunk driving spree which results in them causing a great amount of damage to the Springfield Elementary School, prompting Chief Wiggum to blame the incident on the kids and impose a curfew.
  • In a crossover with Family Guy, he got engaged in a similarly long and violent chicken brawl with Peter Griffin. Just like Peter’s previous fight with Ernie the Giant Chicken, Homer‘s fight with Peter left various places and properties demolished, as well as causing serious or fatal injuries to everyone in Springfield.
    • To add to that, it can also be argued that it was Homer who started this brawl by hitting Peter, who mocked him by saying that his show sucked. Thankfully, he managed to bury the hatchet with Peter for their destructive brawl towards Springfield and become close friends.

Trivia[]

  • While he is normally a good man at his core in the series itself, there are Treehouse of Horror episodes where he is evil, such as when he manipulates Flanders into being an assassin for him.
