Hector is a major antagonist turned supporting protagonist in Netflix's Castlevania series. A Devil Forgemaster turned general in Dracula's army, Hector is manipulated into betraying him by Carmilla, who then proceeds to imprison and enslave him, only for him to earn his freedom and happiness in the end. He is loosely based on the character with the same name from the video game series.
Hector is voiced by Theo James in English, and by Takahiro Sakurai in the Japanese dub.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
- Even while he was a villain in Season 2, Hector was the least villainous member of Dracula's court. Rather than wiping out humanity, he wanted to trim the population and put them in a cull, where they couldn't harm anyone (believing them to be evil) and could serve as food for the vampires. He even tried to convince Dracula to change his objectives.
- Felt clear remorse for betraying Dracula, even attempting to turn on Carmilla for it, and refused to cooperate with her attempts to take over the world, necessitating his enslavement.
- Throughout Season 4, he is shown to be a source of advice and wisdom for Lenore, helping her through her troubles when she turns to him for help.
- While it is revealed that he's been working on a way to resurrect Dracula, this is shown to be less out of a desire to get him to continue his villainy (unlike Death) and more because he felt guilty for helping get him killed in the first place.
- Was able to be talked out of resurrecting Dracula by Isaac.
- Upon predicting Isaac would storm Carmilla's castle, Hector set things up to make it easier to reach and defeat Carmilla, hoping to stop her from taking over the world, partially for revenge and partially because "the world may find that bad for its health". He trapped Lenore in a magic cage so that she couldn't interfere, warned Isaac about what Carmilla was planning, and set up a magical pathway that could take him straight to Carmilla's chambers, which he allowed Isaac to use so he could defeat her.
- Warned Saint Germain not to trust Varney, which was a good call as Varney turned out to be Death all along.
- Though he betrays Lenore, he did genuinely love her. His cage was designed simply to restrain her, and when Isaac showed up, Hector made sure he didn't hurt her.
- When Lenore wished to commit suicide at the end of the series, Hector allowed her despite not liking the idea, wanting her to find peace, and stood by her side in her final moments.
- Though Isaac has done more heroic deeds, Hector was enslaved and imprisoned for most of his screentime, while Isaac was a free man. Thus, Hector cannot be fairly compared to him. Despite this, Hector did the best he could under the circumstances, and was a vital part of the success of Isaac's most admirable deed, which he helped out with by his own accord.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- Spent a large amount of the show as an extremist and a misanthrope, who believed that turning humanity into a cull was best for everyone, and is never shown actually subverting this worldview. Though his misanthropic edge has been dulled somewhat, the extent to which it has is unclear, since unlike Isaac, his change in mindset isn't really focused on.
- While deeply remorseful for betraying Dracula, and for unknowingly working towards the total extinction of humanity, his idea of turning them into a cull isn't that much better, and he never shows remorse for working towards that end.
Trivia[]
- Though this may change come Nocturne, as of now, Hector is one of four characters in Netflix's Castlevania to be Inconsistently Admirable, with the others being Trevor Belmont, Alucard and Isaac.
