I love you! Ugh! What did I say that for?!
~ Gumball to Penny.
It's better to have loved, and watched that love burn before your very eyes, than to have never loved at all.
~ Gumball to Darwin in "The Dress".

Gumball Tristopher Watterson is the titular main protagonist of Cartoon Network's animated sitcom The Amazing World of Gumball.

He is an anthropomorphic blue cat living with his parents Nicole and Richard, his adoptive brother Darwin the goldfish, and his 4-year-old genius sister Anais, in the wacky town of Elmore.

He is voiced by Logan Grove, Jacob Hopkins, Nicolas Cantu, and Duke Cutler.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

  • Cares greatly for his family, including his parents Nicole and Richard, his adoptive brother Darwin, and his younger sister Anais.
  • In spite of his ego and his constant attempts to play a façade of "coolness" amongst his peers, he won't hesitate to show his true, caring side whenever his friends, girlfriend, and family are in trouble.
  • Is often quick at seeing the best in dire situations, such as when his family was financially suffering, or when Clare thought there was "no happy ending" while she was in the process of moving back to her hometown.
  • Shows great concern for his loved ones and is afraid of losing them or seeing them hurt.
  • Saved Darwin and Anais from the house flood.
  • Realized he was going too far with pranking Richard, and made up for it by allowing Richard to prank him back out of guilt.
  • Overcame his Jealousy consuming him with the help of Carrie, Leslie, Darwin and Penny.
  • After noticing Richard was hurt from him and Darwin mocking him, he made up for his actions by reminding Richard he is their hero.
  • Helped Penny find her heart and be okay with her true self after her shell was accidentally broken and she hid out into the forest out of shame of her true self being exposed to the public.
  • Gave Clare a happy ending, which prevented a depressed Clare from moving back to her hometown and leaving her friends at Elmore behind, as well as giving her father a new job at the Rainbow Factory, her house being free from repossession, and Clare and her boyfriend being declared prom king and queen.
  • Stood up to Billy when he was bullying Anais, and caused him to change his ways for the better by giving him advice.
  • Was also willing to stand up to Jodie when he thought she was being a parasitic friend towards Anais.
  • Tried to get Darwin out of an abusive relationship with Jamie.
  • Stopped Rob from stealing a briefcase filled with money and from blowing up a school bus that he, Darwin, his classmates, and some of their parents were on.
  • Felt bad after Darwin thought he was insulting him, and he profusely apologized to him, as well as trying his best to cheer him up and clearing up the situation.
  • Going back into The Void and risking his own life to save his arch-nemesis in spite of Rob becoming a potential threatening antagonist that was willing to destroy everyone Gumball loved and killing several of Gumball's own friends and family members.
  • Restored Alan's faith in the world, which reverted Earth's colors after it turned black-and-white (which also brought back everyone else's faith).
  • Saved the Rainbow Factory from a toxic gas outbreak.
  • Saved Elmore from Superintendent Evil by exposing his true identity: Rob.
  • Forgave Mr. Robinson for his mistreatment of him and Darwin over the years.
  • Showed loyalty to Ms. Simian as her student, despite being her archenemy.
  • Even some of his heinous actions have good intentions behind them.
    • In The Friend, while he, Darwin and Anais mutilated the cops with their traps, it was to defend the Chimera from being arrested.
    • In The Parasite, while attempting to poison Jody was excessive, he and Darwin only did this because they thought she was a toxic friend to Anais. It’s understandable they thought this since the way Anais acted around her made it look like she was being used.
    • Throwing Idaoh at Rocky in The Shippening was done because he didn’t want for him to see his father cheating on his mother.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He has too many moments of mischief, arrogance, manipulation, selfishness, and being an overall jerk to be NPG, some moments being bad enough to make him On & Off. In fact he even passes the Heinous standards and is as a result Inconsistently Heinous.
    • He constantly shows hatred towards the eternally optimistic Alan for very petty reasons and once attempted to psychologically break him by framing him for cheating on Carmen, stealing his lunch to devour it in front of him, and even selling his parents to have them turned into balloon animals at a birthday party.
      • He also once popped Alan when Alan tried to encourage everyone to not skip school.
    • While uncovering his personality to Darwin, it was shown that his ego is bigger than his house.
    • He constantly manipulates characters like Hector and Bobert through the guise of friendship so he can use them for self-benefit.
    • He caused Larry to get fired from all of his jobs and made his wife break up with him so that he could take advantage of it by making Larry beat Richard in a 'lazy-off' contest.
    • He helped his family turn Elmore into a disaster area by destroying a house with termites, pouring bath salts into Elmore's water supply, and trying to convince Sal Left Thumb, a wanted criminal, to mug pedestrians in the neighborhood.
    • He locked Masami in his basement with him to convince her that she would realize how much she actually wanted her birthday by missing it entirely, though this was mostly a misguided attempt to get her something she didn't actually have yet.
    • Without any guilt, he tried to strike revenge against Hot Dog Guy by turning down the heat while he was showering to shrink him, and even pressuring him into eating his own kind.
    • He scammed everyone out of their Halloween candy by telling them a story about a monster and getting them to hire him as a ghost exterminator.
    • He helped encourage Rob to believe that he still had a purpose with being his arch-nemesis for the sake of excitement when no one wants enemies.
    • He helped Richard and Darwin kidnap and psychologically torture Larry just so he could tell them the name of a secret menu item.
    • He manipulated Nicole into apologizing to her abusive parents and saying she wants them back just so that Nicole's parents could give him birthday presents.
  • In "The Recipe" he along with Darwin murdered Anton dozens of times in different brutal ways just to know why he always came back, and once he knew the way he did, he immediately created a clone of him that would go out of control on a rampage that killed the original Anton again.
    • Additionally in the same season he also kills him by eating him alive in a later episode just because he was about to give a spoiler about a movie Gumball wanted to watch.
  • While he does care for his friends and family, he is not above pulling stunts that could get them injured or in serious trouble to get what he wants.
