My sole interest is uncovering the truth.
~ Goro Akechi's All-Out Attack quote.

Goro Akechi, codenamed Crow while in the Metaverse and later Black Mask, is the secondary antagonist of the Persona 5 sub-series within the Persona series.

He was a detective investigating the Phantom Thieves of Hearts case, before becoming a member of the Phantom Thieves himself temporarily. It is later revealed that he works for Masayoshi Shido, the main villain of the game, and is the culprit behind the psychotic breakdown and mental shutdown incidents.

In Persona 5 Royal, after seemingly dying due to his sacrifice in Shido's palace, he is revived by Takuto Maruki in his "ideal" reality. Despite this, Akechi is against Maruki's methods, and allies himself with the Phantom Thieves once more in order to defeat Maruki and restore reality to normal. The expansion also explores more of Akechi's character, as well as his bond with his arch-rival, Ren Amamiya.

He is voiced by Sōichirō Hoshi in Japanese, and by Robbie Daymond in the English dub.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

  • In Masayoshi Shido's palace, after he faces Shido's cognitive version of himself, who then summons a bunch of Shadows, Akechi decides to sacrifice himself in order to help the Phantom Thieves take down Shido.
  • In Persona 5 Royal, he helps the Phantom Thieves defeat Takuto Maruki in order to restore reality to normal, despite knowing that there is a very high chance that he would no longer be alive when reality is returned to normal.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • Even after he redeems himself in the third semester, he throws away his detective prince act and acts like an ruthless, ax-crazy and smug jerk, making bloodthirsty comments while fighting Shadows, leading Sumire to describe him as "ruthless".
  • He shows little remorse for his many murders throughout the game, even killing two of the Phantom Thieves' parents (Futaba's mother and Haru's father), and never is seen apologizing to them.

Trivia[]

  • Akechi was considered to be a Heroic Benchmark previously, before it was realised that his sacrifice in Shido's palace was admirable enough to make him count here instead.
