I can't stand being on the losing end forever!
~ Gon Freecss

Gon Freecss is the main protagonist of the manga and anime series Hunter X Hunter. He is a young boy who becomes a Hunter in order to find his father, Ging.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

  • On the boat to the Hunter Exam registration, Gon saves Katzo from falling overboard.
  • He helps Leorio and Kurapika, who were initially pretty hostile to one another, set their differences aside and make amends, allowing the two to become friends.
  • He easily befriends Killua despite him being an assassin, and his positive influence allows Killua to become a better person.
  • During the second stage of the Hunter Exam, Gon saves Leorio from being killed by Hisoka.
  • When he learns Illumi is Killua's older brother and forced him to become an assassin, Gon gets angry on his friend's behalf and sets out to bring Killua back.
  • He undergoes several weeks of training to open the Test Gate to the Zoldyck Mansion, and he endures a brutal beating from Canary that lasts all day in order to get inside and see Killua.
  • He apologizes to Killua and Wing for acting so recklessly during his fight with Gido.
  • After Gido threatened Zushi, Gon confronts Gido in their rematch and tells him never to hurt or threaten Zushi again.
  • When learning the Phantom Troupe was in Yorknew City, Gon decides to hunt them down on Kurapika's behalf despite the gap in strength.
  • He thanks Zepile for helping them not get swindled and befriends the man, even after he confesses he is a counterfeiter.
  • Gon is upset because he can’t understand why the Phantom Troupe can’t cry for all the people they’ve killed.
  • After learning the Phantom Troupe faked their deaths, he helps Kurapika track down the members of the Phantom Troupe and their leader, Chrollo.
  • Upon meeting Chrollo, he asks him how he could kill innocent people, showing disgust for his callous disregard of life.
  • He tries to convince Kurapika to focus on getting back the eyes of his clan instead of focusing on revenge, not wanting him to become a murderer and is disheartened when he hears Kurapika still plans on getting revenge for his clan.
  • Once Binolt is defeated, Gon thanks Binolt for helping make him stronger, in spite of the fact that Binolt was a serial killer and had spent several days trying to murder them. This is the first time that Binolt had ever been shown kindness by anyone, and it inspires him to turn himself in to the authorities.
  • Gon is disgusted at the way that Razor killed Bopobo despite being his comrade.
  • He apologizes for selfishly challenging the Bombers and putting Killua's safety at risk.
  • He, Killua, and Kite go into the NGL and kill many Chimera Ants to stop them from slaughtering humans. When confronting them, Gon even offers to spare them if they stop killing humans. In addition, he is greatly angered when hearing the Chimera Ants only kill humans for pleasure, and is equally angered when he hears Rhino call Baro trash.
  • Gon has many good factors, such as being kind and helpful towards others, and easily befriends Killua even when he used to be an assassin. He loves his friends and is always ready to protect them and to avenge them if anything happens to them.
  • He is generally innocent and lacks malice, and likes to befriend other people and creatures.
  • Gon will generally help people and go out of his way to lend support to others, though this is only done with his friends or when there is nothing for him to lose in the transaction.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He definitely develops into an anti-hero through the story. Not that he primarily had altruistic motivations, he's essentially self-serving.
  • He has a very distorted moral compass along with moral agency issues, if he doesn't outright lack it: instead of viewing things based on right or wrong, he acts based on his curiosity and how much others do for him.
  • He's too lethal, an extremist and he's a berserker corrupted by his wrath and by his selfish and impulsive nature.
  • He ultimately prioritizes his own interests before the lives of others: a good example of this was during the Hunter Exam, an exam he took alongside Killua and Hisoka. During this test, he had to get the tag of Hisoka in order to pass to the final challenge, but in order to do this, Gon waited for the perfect opportunity. That opportunity came when Hisoka was about to cross paths with another test taker, Agon. Gon knew full-well that Hisoka was full of bloodlust, and this man would certainly be killed, but Gon chose not to warn him and allowed Hisoka to attack. The confrontation gave Gon the chance to take Hisoka’s tag, but Agon was killed by Hisoka. This highlights his selfish nature and unwillingness to help others if they get in the way of his goals. Adding onto this, during the Hunter Exam, he just looks at the deaths of the participants while still smiling and thinks little of it.
  • He ultimately isn’t affected by the deaths of others as long as the people who died are not close to him. Then, while Pitou was undoubtedly cruel and Gon was right to be angry for what they did to Kite, they still was healing the blind girl Komugi, but he didn’t care about any redeeming qualities Pitou may have had or protecting any other life, wanting to view Pitou as this pure evil character and seeing it as unfair Pitou could be anything else. If it wasn’t for Killua, Gon likely would’ve gotten Komugi killed, and while Gon did allow Pitou to heal Komugi, he treated her more like a bargaining chip than a person. He only gave Pitou an hour to heal, and cut their time by ten minutes later on.
  • When Killua tells Gon to calm down, Gon replies that it must have been really easy for Killua to remain calm since it had nothing to do with him, insulting and hurting Killua even though he'd done nothing but help Gon.
  • When Komugi awakened and Pitou tried to explain what happened, Gon proclaimed that if they spoke out of line again, he would kill Komugi, and with the deadly aura he had, that was no bluff. This exposes Gon’s hypocrisy: before, when he came across the leader of the Phantom Troupe, he asked him how he could kill people who didn’t have anything to do with him. But now, he was willing to kill a blind girl in order to force Pitou to cooperate. It shows the lengths he was willing to go and the people he was fine with killing to get what he wanted.
  • He had Komugi be held as hostage by Killua and the other extermination team members to ensure Pitou’s cooperation. With only bloodlust and hatred fueling him, he was willing to sacrifice his life and his ability to use Nen in order to kill Pitou. Not considering the impact his death would have on those close to him or trying to see the sense of good in Pitou, he killed them without hesitation.
  • While he feels guilty over having hurt and insulted Killua, he is never shown expressing any remorse for the way he threatened Komugi and nearly killed her, nor does he appear to even think about what happened to her.
