~ Dr. Ishiro Serizawa regarding Godzilla before embarking to heal him. |
Godzilla (ゴジラ, Gojira), also dubbed as Titanus Gojira, is the main protagonist of Legendary's MonsterVerse franchise.
He is a colossal reptilian Titan who serves as the territorial protector of the Earth's natural balance and ecosystem. An apex predator who feeds on radiation, Godzilla has periodically surfaced throughout human history, worshiped as a god and an inspiring myth by a super-ancient civilization. He also ensured that the natural order remains stable by forcing other Titans to submit under his rule, otherwise he would kill those who refuse to serve him, whether already having different goals and ideals or opposing his status for domination.
He is motion-captured by T.J. Storm.
His Good Ranking[]
Debated Validations[]
- Even if it was unintentional and he couldn't prevent it from happening while fighting other Titans, he still destroys many buildings and cities throughout the franchise, causing immense damage and ruining the lives of many people; two of which, those include Mark Russell and Ren Serizawa, would later instigate the conflicts in Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong respectively. As the movies lampshade, he just goes back into the ocean leaving all the destruction behind afterwards (though in all fairness, he wouldn't likely help to rebuild anything).
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
- He fights to protect and preserve the natural balance of the Earth and, despite showing dominance over all Titans, he only kills those who dare to threaten the planet's balance.
- Even though he did destroy and cross through the Golden Gate Bridge while he hunted for the MUTOs, it appears to be genuinely accidental or merely him panicking after the military shot his gills.
- He dispatched the male and female MUTOs, preventing them from spreading their reproduced species uncontrollably across the entire world with a parasitic fist.
- He did save the Monarch crew inside the Argo and Madison Russell from the deadly clutches of Ghidorah, whom would've succeeded had not Godzilla intervened. It can also be assumed that he had acknowledged the Monarch crew after Dr. Serizawa rejuvenated and empowered him.
- After Mothra sacrificed herself to unleash their symbiotic form and, combining that with the imminent atomic meltdown from being triggered by Dr. Serizawa, he managed to slaughter Ghidorah for good with his thermonuclear/atomic attacks.
- Despite his role in trying to kill Mothra, Godzilla spared Rodan after he bowed in submission, knowing well that the latter follows the strongest among the Titans.
- He reclaimed authority over the Titans and made them stop attacking the world. As shown in Godzilla Dominion, where he and his fellow Titans worked on undoing the damage Ghidorah caused on Earth, and (at some point) Godzilla saved Na Kika from a terroristic human faction which he defeated with aid of Monarch jets. Afterwards, he ordered them to go back to hibernation once he reclaimed his lair from Tiamat.
- He tried to find and destroy the potentially threatening Alpha Titan he had sensed in Apex Cybernetics, which in his case, was Ghidorah. While his reputation was temporarily tarnished by humanity, which was manipulated by Apex into believing Godzilla had turned evil, unbeknownst to them however, his attacks only targeted facilities belonging Apex Cybernetics, and while he did become surprisingly aggressive during these attacks, it becomes clear that he just targeted those who are a threat to the balance of nature, so his targeted locations were only a heat-up moment.
- Following his rematch against Kong, he became somewhat surprised over the giant ape's determination and ultimately decided to spare him instead of outright killing him. Upon being saved by Kong from Mechagodzilla later on, he began recognizing him as an ally and decided to help him into defeating the giant haywire robot. After Mechagodzilla's failure, Godzilla decided to part on peaceful terms with Kong rather than attempting to start another fight, therefore he accepted Kong's truce.
- Upon sensing the Skar King's awakening, he wasted no time to prepare and deal the threat by absorbing necessary amount of energy in order to evolve and (later, after his cleared misunderstanding with Kong) join forces with Kong and Mothra to stop the hostile Titan. After Shimo was freed by Suko, Godzilla convinced her to turn against her barbaric tormentor once and for all. He then fires his atomic breath to dispatch the icy storm Shimo reluctantly created.
- Despite his animalistic lifestyle, he does have moral agency and demonstrates clear actions he commits for the greater good, as well as showing a degree of emotions, like:
- Seemingly shedding a tear when Dr. Serizawa sacrificed himself to rejuvenate and empower him.
- Genuinely mourning over Mothra's sacrifice to empower him.
- Showing fair rule over his Titan subordinates who submit to him.
- Personally thanking Kong for saving his life from Mechagodzilla's fatality.
- Agreeing with Mothra's suggestion to work together with Kong to defeat the Skar King, after she cleared the misunderstanding, and returns to his more level-headed self after his hostility (against Kong and Apex) vanished.
- While he does fight to preserve the balance of nature, he passes the admirable standard way easily, due to saving the Earth's ecosystem from destruction several times.
- Unlike most of his incarnations, the MonsterVerse variant is never outright hostile towards humanity in the first place, and only attacks them once he is provoked. Also, because he demonstrated fair rule over his Titan subordinates as well as keeping them from attacking human civilization, it's clear that he allowed humans and Titans to coexist, as long as humans don't provoke the Titans and both races don't tamper the planet's natural balance.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He is an anti-hero, as he does destroy many buildings and cities and recklessly endangers many lives during his battles against evil Titans, according to the aforementioned validation. Moreover, he only cares about maintaining the natural balance of the Earth, and ensuring his status as the Alpha Titan of the planet's surface. Due to his indifference to heroism, Godzilla has some corrupting factors:
- He can be an extremist, as he destroys with good intentions to empower himself or demolish his foes' remnants.
- Such extremism was seen when he rampaged cities (like Florida and Hong Kong) to destroy Apex facilities and demolish Ghidorah's remnants attached to Mechagodzilla, or raiding a nuclear power plant to evolve himself and battle against the vile Skar King. Although unscrupulous, these actions are understandably justified.
- He is too lethal to be NPG, due to his animalistic fighting style that can often brutalize, or outright kill, his opponents, which also showcases his incredibly violent nature once he is provoked.
- Such lethality was seen when he fires his atomic breath down the female MUTO's throat (the "Kiss of Death") and holds her severed head while roaring victoriously. He also displays this against Scylla and Tiamat for their traitorous insubordinations.
- Such violence was seen during his rematch against Kong in Hong Kong, as he is shown sadistically laughing after striking Kong with his atomic breath, angrily retaliating by slashing Kong's chest, and fighting more pragmatically than usual, out of rage for Kong's defiance.
- Later on (after his evolution), he is so blinded with rage that he attacked Kong, due to a misunderstanding of Godzilla thinking Kong is breaking their deal, which is fortunately cleared up in courtesy of Mothra's timed interference.
- He can be an extremist, as he destroys with good intentions to empower himself or demolish his foes' remnants.
Trivia[]
- He and Kong are the only two IA characters to be considered kaiju protagonists throughout the MonsterVerse franchise.
- Interestingly, their ancient rivalry and lethality, are both notable preventions as to why they can't be NPG nor PG.
- He is also one of the three Godzilla incarnations to be Inconsistently Admirable, the others being Heisei Godzilla and Final Wars Godzilla.
