No matter the man, we all wear masks... Either on our faces, or over our hearts.
~ Godot
Blacker than a moonless night, hotter and more bitter than Hell itself… that is coffee.
~ Godot expressing his love for coffee

Godot (formerly Diego Armando or Sōryū Kaminogi in Japanese) is the secondary antagonist of the video game Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations and one of the two overarching protagonists (alongside Mia Fey) of the Phoenix Wright trilogy. Despite being an antagonist, he can't be considered a villain and is actually trying to save the life of Maya Fey. After being incarcerated, he shows respect to Phoenix Wright, deeming him as a worthy successor to Mia and accepts his punishment before being possibly executed for murdering Misty Fey.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

  • He was a defense attorney who protected innocent lives from being convicted before falling into a coma.
  • In Mia’s first case, he helped her by giving some advice on what to do as a lawyer and gave her some clues on what to do in her case.
  • His words were the reason why Mia became who she is now, which she would then pass onto Phoenix Wright, who would then pass it onto his own protégés, Apollo Justice and Athena Cykes.
  • When Mia blamed herself and cried for being unable to save Terry Fawles, he told her that she should not cry yet. Gripping his coffee cup so hard that it shattered and making his hand bleed, he stated “The only time when a lawyer cries is when it’s all over”, saving her from falling completely into despair and giving up.
  • After learning that Mia was murdered by Redd White and Dahlia was already put in death row, is willing to protect her sister Maya Fey from any threats.
  • He became a prosecutor to test Phoenix’s worthiness in defending his clients like Mia taught him, being fair and reasonable unlike most prosecutors who would stoop to loathsome depths to win cases.
  • He also did this to spy on Morgan Fey after she tried to frame Maya for murdering someone, in order to prevent Morgan from harming or trying to kill her again.
  • When hearing that Morgan talked to Pearl about a letter she had hidden, which were instructions for killing Maya Fey in order for her to become the next Master of the Kurain Channeling Technique, and convinced Maya and Phoenix to go to the inner temple, he contacted Iris and Misty Fey, telling them his plan and asking for their assistance in saving Maya.
  • While Dahlia was being channelled by Misty to prevent Pearl from channeling her who attempted to kill Maya Fey, he saves Maya’s life by stabbing Dahlia in the back which ends up killing Misty Fey.
  • When Phoenix has a mental breakdown in court over Maya possibly committing suicide, he helped Phoenix regain hope that Maya was still alive by giving him a clue that lead to Phoenix figuring out it was impossible for Maya to have died.
  • He is brave enough to admit his wrongdoings, continuing the trial and taking accountability for his actions rather than letting Iris take the fall, even though this could have spared him jail time.
  • When being found out as the killer, he cries tears in blood demonstrating his remorse.
  • While he did blame Phoenix for failing to save Mia, he accepted and blamed himself for not being there to protect her after falling into a coma, expressing guilt.
  • He shared one last cup of coffee with Phoenix Wright saying his name correctly before going to prison.
  • Despite only appearing in the third game, Godot still manages to stand out just like the rest of the characters in the series with lower resources and his vast influence over the series.
  • Despite being stabbed, he tries to make up for his mistakes and prevent Dahlia from attacking again, something that causes his health to deteriorate and possibly kill him.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • Just like many of the other characters, he is shown to be arrogant and a jerk quite often, most notably when he almost manipulated Phoenix into believing Mia dying was his fault and constantly saw himself above others while in the courtroom.
  • He is an anti-hero and is only interested in taking cases where Phoenix is involved and doesn't care about fighting for justice in court. The way he handled Morgan and Dahlia's conspiracy make him morally ambiguous at best.
  • He kept projecting his anger for not being able to save Mia into Phoenix Wright and constantly insulted him in court. He even threw hot cups of coffee at him.
  • Misty's death is partly his fault. He was aware of the fact that alerting authorities or Phoenix Wright would have prevented Dahlia from attacking Maya, yet took matters into his own hands. The only thing that stops this from being a villainous act was that Godot was too prideful and desperate to think rationally.

Trivia[]

  • He is currently the only Ace Attorney character to be Inconsistently Admirable.
