Shocked Uzi

That's... convenient.
Uzi Doorman has realized that this candidate isn't approved as Inconsistently Admirable due to not being proposed in blog posts and thus we don't know if they meet all the criteria! While this isn't the worst thing in the world, this candidate needs a proposal so it can be sick as hell! So go on out there and propose this candidate!

"DO YOU KNOW THAT DESERTERS OF THE BATTLEFIELD WILL BE SHOT!?"
~ blurting out one of his corrupting traits to Megumi/Jamie in the english dub of episode 9, before infamously slapping her

General Oka (a.k.a. Commander Robinson in the Phillipines English dub) is a supporting character in the anime Voltes V.

He was voiced in Japanese by the late Hiroshi Masuoka, and in English by the late Chito Vincente.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable[]

  • He is the leader of the Earth Defense Force who supported Voltes team. He also is said to be one of the co-designers of the robot Voltes V.
  • In episode 31, after freeing her from the influence of a Beast Fighter within a ring she was wearing, he sacrifices himself to buy Megumi enough time to regroup with her team and form Voltes V. He also did it to atone for his constantly trying to shove his excessive military discipline down other people's throats.

Debated validations[]

Oka kept his terminal illness secret from the Voltes team, and likely would have rejected any of their attempts to help cure his sickness. Even if it were for something along the lines of security reasons of possibly affecting the team’s performance in battle, his secrecy about his illness may or may not have been the best decision.

What Makes Him Inconsistent[]

  • He can be very bullheaded, wrathful and inflexible(too much so to be NPG), demanding complete obedience at all costs. This arguably makes him about as bad/morally grey as Kozo Sakonji(Dr. Hook) at his absolute worst, whom Oka also likely enabled, though Kozo eventually subverted his corrupt traits coincidentally after Oka’s death.[1]
  • He arguably condoned Dr. Hamaguchi's kidnapping Ippei to force him to join the Voltes Team.
  • In epsiode 9,
    • Despite being supposed to support Megumi and being happy to see her at first, he ungratefully reprimands her when she admits she came alone and slaps her. Although it was a one-time moment, it is still his biggest corrupting factor, he shows zero remorse for this severely out-of-character behavior, and the english dub makes it worse:
      • He angrily blurted out that deserters of the battlefield would be shot, implying he has no problem with injuring(and possibly even killing) subordinates to impose his worldview on the others. This particular brutal protocol was evidenced as early as the first episode.[1]
      • He and Hamaguchi punished Megumi with confinement in the medical room for four days despite her successfully saving his life and helping stop the missile attack on the Voltes Team(who figured out that she left them for this good reason), which is kind of ironic since she would have to stay in the hospital for a few days to recover anyway due to her injured thigh.
  • In episode 31,
    • He hangs up on her daughter just for asking him if he lost weight. Although her giggling after this shows she was only teasing because she wanted to see if the sweater she made for him will fit, Oka was still being a jerk to hang up on her right away for a simple question.
    • He was willing to shoot his daughter to destroy the ring that was possessing her, when he could have simply tried removing the ring by physical force as his first option. He did beg forgiveness from Megumi as he was about to shoot the ring.

Trivia[]

  • He shares his english voice actor with Jangal Rui(called Draco in the English dub).
  • He serves as an example of an IA letting the pressures of war get to his head, causing him to act in ways that contradict the good guys' moral values.
  • He is the first character in Voltes V, and the Robot Romance Trilogy in general, to be deemed IA.
  1. 1.0 1.1 This lends to an underlying theme throughout the show about war being capable of making the good guys no better than the bad.
