Inconsistently Admirable Wiki

Garfield is the titular main protagonist of the 2004 comedy film Garfield: The Movie based on Jim Davis' comic strip of the same name and its 2006 adventure comedy sequel Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties.

He is a lazy and gluttonous cat with orange fur who lives in Jon Arbuckle's house with his best friend Odie.

He was voiced by Bill Murray, who also played Peter Venkman from Ghostbusters series.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes him Admirable?[]

In General[]

  • Even though he is a lazy and gluttonous cat who has treated others horribly, including his owner Jon and his friend Odie, he has also shown that deep down he cares for them.

Garfield: The Movie[]

  • When Jon told him to catch a mouse, Garfield pretended to eat it and then release it, especially since Louis was his friend.
  • He taught Odie how to dance which eventually helped him win a dog show.
  • Although he became jealous of Jon paying more attention to Odie and threw the dog out on the street, Garfield ultimately decided to save him when he learned that Chapman planned to take the dog to New York.
  • He apologized to Odie for selfishly throwing him out of the house, which led to Chapman kidnapping the dog.
  • He was genuinely disgusted when Happy Chapman wanted to use a dangerous shock collar to force Odie to do tricks. In this way, Garfield shows that he has some standards.
  • He convinced Sir Roland, whom Happy Chapman had abandoned at the shelter, that not all people are bad.
  • Showing sincere remorse, he admitted to the dogs and cats that he had thrown Oddie out of the house and that he was his best friend. This indirectly motivated the dogs and cats to flee the animal shelter.
  • When he failed to get to the train carrying Chapman and Odie, he used the control panel to stop it.
  • Even though he set dogs, cats, and rats on Chapman, and finally shocked him with his own shock collar, it was completely justified considering what a terrible person Chapman was.

Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties[]

  • Though he initially tried to prevent Jon from proposing to Liz, he eventually overturned this corrupting trait.
  • He taught the animals of Carlyle Castle how to make Lasagna.
  • When he discovered that Winston and the rest of the castle animals had lied to him, he felt remorseful and tearfully apologized to Jon for leaving him.
  • He was disgusted to see Lord Dargis flirting with Liz, his owner’s girlfriend, and lured him away from her, preventing Liz from potentially being seduced away from Jon.
  • He was partly right to scold Winston and the animals of Carlyle Castle for lying about being a prince.
  • When Prince XII ordered the animals to escape from the castle, Garfield convinced them to stop Lord Dargis. This ultimately led to them standing up to Dargis and stopping him from dishonestly signing over his inheritance.
  • He brought Jon an engagement ring and helped him propose to Liz.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He tends to be very rude and often a selfish jerk.
    • He enjoys being spoiled by Jon and often plays mean pranks on him.
      • He jumped on Jon's stomach to wake him up when he demanded breakfast.
      • He flushed the toilet through the shower just because he sang terribly.
      • He switched meals so Jon accidentally ate liver for Garfield.
      • He spitefully played loud music when Jon tried to invite Liz over for dinner.
      • He spitefully threw away Jon's clothes so he and Odie would follow him to London.
    • He also abused Odie many times, treating him like a complete idiot who's merely a pawn to him.
      • He infamously kicked Odie out of the house simply because Jon was paying more attention to him, which also led to the events of the first movie, not to mention he told Jon to forget about him while Odie was missing. Even after he apologized to Odie for throwing him out of the house, he still wrongly blamed him for stealing Jon's attention.
    • In a way, he treated Arleen and especially Nermal as if they are his subservient servants rather than friends.
    • He also didn't like Jon's girlfriend Liz to some extent because he didn't want Jon to marry her because he was afraid that he would stop taking care of him. Even though he had overturned his dislike for Jon's girlfriend Liz, he was still disgusted by their kiss.
  • He was initially impressed when he was mistaken for Prince XII, which he used for his own selfish pleasures, and was also completely unconcerned that Lord Dargis was planning to demolish Carlyle Castle and mass animal genocide.
  • He is somewhat xenophobic towards dogs, often considering them to be idiots.
    • He often insults Odie by calling him stupid just for being a dog.
    • He often torments Luca by saying that he is on a chain.
    • He calls Romel stupid (although it was justified since he intended to kill him)
  • He committed several immoral and reckless acts throughout the films:
    • He repeatedly stole milk and food from his neighbors.
    • While he was being chased by dogs, he caused people to be mildly hurt in a dog show by running up a lady's dress and making her run until she violently slammed into two men, and his antics also caused a few people to be tripped over by the dogs chasing him.
    • He played with the train control panel and almost caused the trains to collide, nearly killing many people. Although he managed to prevent the tragedy, Garfield didn't seem to care at all.
  • Although both characters deserved it and it is played for comedy, Garfield has expressed a certain level of sadism by electrocuting Chapman with the Electric Collar a couple of times, and tormenting Lord Dargis along with Prince XII and a few other animals.
