~ Felonious Gru. |
Felonious Gru Sr., better known simply as Gru, is the main protagonist of Illumination's Despicable Me franchise.
He is a supervillain who aspires to surpass everybody's expectations on him and become the greatest supervillain of all time and plans to do this by stealing the Moon. However, he ends up bonding with three little girls he initially adopted as a part of his plan and decides to stop being a supervillain. He eventually met and fell in love with Agent Lucy Wilde, from the Anti-Villains League, or AVL, and ends up marrying her and becoming part of the agency as well. He is also a minor character in the prequel movie, Minions and the titular main protagonist of Minions 2: Rise of Gru.
He was voiced by Steve Carell as both adult and child, who also voiced Gru's twin brother, Dru, in Despicable Me 3.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
Minions: The Rise of Gru[]
- He saved his favorite villain, Wild Knuckles, prevented Vicious 6 from ruining New Year’s, and was willing to make Wild Knuckles proud by becoming the best villain of all time.
Despicable Me[]
- Even as a villain, he treated Dr. Nefario and his Minions fairly well.
- Part of the reason he is a villain is because of his father, who himself is a supervillain.
- Though Gru initially neglected the girls after adopting them by leaving them on their own and even showed no empathy when Edith survived, he later came to care for them as his daughters, even becoming more protective of them in the sequels.
- He made his daughters have as much as fun as they could in the amusement park. He also got Agnes a toy unicorn by standing up to a jerkish vendor.
- He desperately used his rocket to go to his daughter's ballet presentation, trying to make amends for putting his villainous duties over them.
- Was willing to trade the Moon, the one thing that he lived years dreaming of obtaining to get the respect he wanted, in exchange for his daughters that were kidnapped by Vector, despite Vector not honoring the deal.
- Saved his daughters from Vector before the Moon grew to its original size and blasted them all to space.
- Retired from villainy so that he could be a proper parent to his daughters.
Despicable Me 2[]
- He used a ridiculous fairy costume in Agnes's birthday, as the fairy's actor refused to go to the party.
- Agreed on investigating the serum PX-41's location to AVL (though it was most likely because he wanted to feel the thrill of adventure again).
- Went to rescue Lucy from El Macho and defeat him, with the help of his daughters, Nefario, and two Minions, to prevent him from launching an army of purple minions, to wreck havoc and conquer the world, thus saving tons of lives in the aftermath.
- Implied that Floyd Eaglesan, who was framed by El Macho for possessing a PX-41 got released once Gru turned El Macho over to the AVL.
Despicable Me 3[]
- Probably arrested more villains once he became part of AVL.
- Retrieved the stolen diamond from Balthazar Bratt (despite him later stealing it again).
- Made up with Dru at the end, and apologized for lashing out on him.
- Saved his daughters from Bratt and stopped him from blasting the entirety of Hollywood into space, before finally defeating Bratt in a dance battle leading to his arrest.
- Although not well-intentioned and to an extent hypocritical, he yelled at Dru for not keeping his deal in not going back to villainy
Despicable Me 4[]
- He was a loving father to Gru jr and tried to bond with him.
- He assured the girls everything would be ok in Mayflower.
- He hunted down AVL's Most Wanted Supervillains to protect the humanity
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- Even after redeeming himself, he is still way too much of a jerk and is constantly mischievous, sadistic and inconsiderate which prevent him from being NPG or PG. Even though he defeats villains that threaten the well-beings of others, he still laughs at them and enjoys seeing their defeats. Other moments of these are:
- He sprayed Jillian with a hose just because she was annoying him with proposals on who to date.
- Insulted Silas Ramsbottom by calling him Mr. Sheepsbutt.
- He continues to have his dog ruin his neighbor’s garden even after his redemption.
- He tried to freeze Lucy before even getting to know her. Although she did later become his wife, unlike her, he never showed remorse for this.
- He tried to prevent his oldest daughter Margo from dating boys many times and froze Antonio, El Macho’s son, after he rejected her. Granted, he deserved this, but the way he reacted was too ruthless.
- He slammed another car into a wall just for imitating him.
- He tried to brutally kill Dru’s butler Fritz he barely knew and was just trying to talk to him in a missile that sent him far away before exploding. After visiting Dru’s house, he doesn’t care when Edith makes him involved in slapstick humor, which proves that he never showed remorse for this either.
- Although Dru was acting childish, he says Dru did nothing, was a total screw up, and said it was no wonder why their dad saw Dru as a failure.
- He was very arrogant to Maxime Le Mal, even visiting him in prison primarily to gloat.
- He still shows respect for other famous villains for their past crimes, such as El Macho.
- He accepted Dru’s offer in going on many crimes with him, which is straight up villainous, thus proving that he’s not incorruptible.
- He spent most of his life before meeting the girls as a villain who commits many crimes, and despite showing remorse for giving up the girls in the first movie and permanently staying a hero, he never showed remorse for any of his villainy at all, preventing him from being NPG. He also told Dru “No villainy tonight!” despite never atoning for any of the crimes he committed with Dru in the slightest.
- He helped Poppy Prescott steal his professor’s skunk. While this was pragmatic as he didn’t want his true identity to be revealed, he nonetheless enjoyed doing it without any remorse and didn’t tell Lucy about this.
