Commander Erwin Smith is a major supporting character in the Attack on Titan franchise.

Due to being the leader of the Survey Corps, Erwin is responsible for the missions outside the wall to reclaim the land from the Titans. Erwin is also obsessed to find the truth of the Walls and the Titans as he wants to find out if his father's theory about the outside world was true.

He is voiced by Daisuke Ono in the Japanese version of the anime (who also voiced Jotaro Kujo in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure), and J. Michael Tatum in the English version of the anime.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

  • Followed his father's footsteps to find the truth of the Walls.
  • As a scout, Erwin was instrumental in several recon successes during their expeditions.
  • Erwin later developed Long-Distance Enemy Scouting Operation, which drastically reduced Titan casualties, due to which he was recommended to succeed Keith Shadis.
  • He stopped Levi from killing Mike when they first met.
  • Saved Eren, Armin and Mikasa from the Titans during the Battle of Trost.
  • When Eren was revealed to be a Titan Shifter and was scheduled to be executed, Erwin spoke up for him that he will keep an eye on him.
  • His speech about the future of Humanity and the success against Titans inspired several top recruits to join the Survey Corps.
  • He saved Eren from Bertolt and Reiner by cutting off Reiner's titan finger.
  • Erwin only rebelled against the King so that the Military Police don't halt their progress to remove Titans from the world.
  • He convinces of his troops to go on a suicide range with him so Levi could kill the Beast Titan, sacrificing himself and allowing the Survey Corps survivors to learn the truth about the world outside of the walls.
    • When Erwin was offered a chance to save himself by turning into a Titan Shifter, he passed up the chance because he didn't feel himself worthy to inherit the world's secrets after dooming his recruits.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He had no hesitation in sacrificing his men, and he didn't do this with the goal of helping humanity, but to prove his father's theory.
    • This will also lead to the rise of Floch Forster, who goes mad due to being the sole survivor of the said sacrifice, leading him to turn the majority of the new members of the Survey Corps into xenophobic extremists and causing an insurrection within the Eldian Military as a whole, forming a fascist paramilitary group, helping Eren with the Rumbling, and eventually rule Paradis Island/Eldia.
  • He planned the raid on Stohess District in order to arrest Annie Leonhart, which caused casualties of hundreds of innocent civilians, resulting in the public's lowered trust on the Survey Corps.
  • Blackmailed the Military Police several times just for minor reasons.
