“ | Hear me, all Subjects of Ymir. My name is Eren Yeager. I now speak to all Subjects of Ymir by way of the Founding Titan's power. Every wall on the island of Paradis has been unhardened. All of the Titans buried within them have begun to walk. My goal... is to protect the people of Paradis, who bore me and raised me. But the world desires the extinction of the people of Paradis. Over countless years, their hatred has grown beyond this island. They surely will not stop until they have killed every one of the Subjects of Ymir. I reject their desire. The Titans of the Walls will trample and rumble all the lands beyond this island. Until the lives there... are eliminated from this world. | „ |
~ Eren announcing his plans to the Subjects of Ymir. |
Eren Yeager, also known as the Attack Titan, is the main protagonist of the Attack on Titan franchise.
He is a young Eldian who strove to become a Titan Slayer alongside his two best friends after being forced to watch his mother die. Along the way, however, he realizes he has Titan abilities and uses them to fight the Titans until he learns a much more complex truth that the real world is actually massive and filled with human civilization, while he he has been living within an isolated territory on an island, which serves as a penal colony for the nation Marley.
He is voiced by Yuki Kaji in the Japanese version of the anime, and Bryce Papenbrook in the English version, both of whom also voiced Meliodas from the Seven Deadly Sins.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
- As a child, he disobeyed his father's warning and rescued Mikasa by killing two sex traffickers and then motivated her to kill her third assailant. He then gave the now-orphaned Mikasa his scarf and let her live with him and his family.
- He befriended Armin by saving him from three stronger bullies.
- During the attack on Shiganshina, he tries to save his mother by dragging the rubble off of her body, only to be dragged away by a scout and cries for her, feeling remorse for never saying he loved her.
- He joined the Survey Corps in order to eliminate the Titans, despite the Corp being an unthankful and dangerous job.
- Saves his home during the Trost invasion by beating multiple Titans.
- Saves his friends form a cannon blast by using his Titan form.
- He helps defeat the Marleyan terrorist Annie until she is forced to crystallize herself and become incapacitated.
- Fights off the Smiling Titan who kills his mom after it killed his mentor.
- He uses his Titan form to lure Reiner away and fight him one on one.
- He fights Bertolt then sneaks out of his Titan to sneak up on and rip him out of his Titan while Armin is distracting him.
- He and Mikasa motivate Levi to rescue Armin's life and have him become the Colossal Titan.
- He gets angry when Historia is made by the government to become the next Beast Titan.
- Before resorting to Zeke's plan, Eren allowed the Eldian military to try negotiating peace for years, but was disillusioned due to his visions sent by his future-self and himself following fate without question. During his time in Marley, Eren constantly asked to himself if he could really massacre the nation and the rest of the world's inhabitants, calling himself a monster worse than Reiner who has no right talking about "justice" or pretend he is a hero.
- He cried and apologized to a Middle Eastern boy, Ramzi, for having to be involved in his warpath.
- He made it clear to Reiner that the raid on Liberio, which internment zone's was his father's hometown, is nothing personal against the Warriors or even the Marleyan government and that is simply pushed by the circumstances to do it. He understood that in Marley and everywhere else were all different kinds of people and that it wasn't all black & white.
- Frees Ymir from her miserable servitude towards the Royal Family.
- All of his actions are motivated by doing what he thinks is best for Eldia.
- His death is played for sympathy, as he wants to make sure his friends are recognized by the world, the Marleyans, and the Global Alliance for their heroic deeds.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He is very impulsive and has little in the way of empathy and is prone to taking things at face value, evaluating situations or ideas solely by his own arbitrary perspective and rarely ever thought deeper about them unless pointed out to him by something else. His black and white view on the world leads him to believe anybody who denies freedom to others is automatically evil, which can lead him to go on rages without thinking and occasionally cause people around him to worry for him.
- He picks fights with and insults just about anybody who doesn't hate Titans as much as him, such as when he screams at a group of Trainees for slacking off, calls the Scout dropouts disappointments and fights Jean for wanting to remain in the interior due to believing it is cowardly and multiple other moments.
- He is prone to violent and sadistic tendencies when facing his enemies, even if they are not Titans.
- This is well shown when he fights against Mikasa's kidnappers and repeatedly screaming they are animals who deserve to die for "being what they are" while stabbing them. He refused to show remorse for this and stated they deserved to die, which even if was true, shows how violent he was at a young age.
- He also shows sadism in his fight with Annie Leonhardt by hitting her even as she is crawling away. During their fight, he also didn't show much concern for the civilians who were caught up and killed in their battle.
- After making contact with Historia, he becomes a full-fledged villain, who does numerous horrible acts (to the point of passing the heinous standard):
- He opts to provoke Marley and the world by attacking Liberio, as part of Zeke's plan to damage the enemy military and push numerous nations to join Marley's cause as the Global Alliance, but also killing numerous civilians as collateral damage in the process. Despite admitting to Reiner that he understands that humans are all the same and that not everybody outside the Walls is an enemy, Eren still goes on a mass murder spree for pragmatic reasons.
- He uses Ymir's power as he awakens millions of Wall Titans that trample anybody in their path in the attempt to destroy all the world and humanity. Although he is stopped in the end, before he can complete the Rumbling, he admits that if the opposition did not stop him, he would have continued to the end, without even elaborating why he felt the need to massacre the globe. Eren was actually dissatisfied and disappointed with the outside world and how it wasn't as free, amazing, and devoid of human civilization as he had imagined in his younger years. The world wanting to eradicate all Subjects of Ymir in the world gave Eren a pretext to try to realize his wish to destroy and "free" the world of human beings.
- His paternal grandparents got killed by the Rumbling too in the process, as well as his former commander Hange. He admitted he was planning to wipe out the remaining 20%, if the alliance between Marley and the Survey Corps had failed to stop him.
- Sent Dina's Titan to his parents' house to kill his mother in order to realize his future.
