~ Ellie swearing revenge in the trailer of The Last of Us Part II |
Ellie Williams is one of the main protagonists of The Last of Us franchise, serving as the deuteragonist of The Last of Us, the protagonist of Left Behind and American Dreams, and one of the two protagonists (alongside Abby Anderson) of The Last of Us Part II.
A nineteen-year-old survivor, Ellie is "mature beyond her years" as a result of the circumstances of her environment, and after being bitten by an infected, is revealed to be immune to the Cordyceps. With the Fireflies believing that could make a vaccine, Marlene tasks Joel to take Ellie across the states to reach St. Mary's hospital in Salt Lake City. During her journey, Ellie forms a bond with Joel, who becomes her surrogate father and protector. In the sequel, Ellie swears vengeance against the group that murdered Joel, traveling to Seattle where her morality is tested for her pursuit.
She was voiced by Ashley Johnson.
Her Good Ranking[]
What Makes Her Admirable?[]
American Dreams and Left Behind[]
- When both her and Riley were attacked by Infected in both American Dreams and Left Behind, she managed to save her at several points. She also saves her when they're attacked by smugglers in the Fireflies' tunnel.
- When Marlene and one of the Fireflies tried to hurt her and Riley for trespassing, she stole one of their gun and points it at Marlene, demanding her to leave her alone.
- She's very selfless, carrying about many people around her and being willing to put her life at risk if it means helping others.
The Last of Us[]
- She cared about Marlene, protecting her when she was wounded right before she met Joel and Tess.
- She also cared about Tess, being worried about leaving her behind after finding out she was bitten.
- She helps Joel and saves him many times when they're fighting against Infected and thugs throughout the same time, and he saves her in return as well.
- She was willing to help a wounded man in Pittsburgh until Joel showed her that he was faking it.
- She asked Joel to help Henry and Sam when they met them despite the latter's distrust.
- When Joel was left behind by Henry and Sam, she risked her life by trying to save him as the two were chased by a group of thugs.
- She stole a robot toy at the toy shop and gave it to Sam to comfort him.
- When Joel was severely wounded by being impaled on an iron rod, she helped him get up and managed to take him to a hideout.
- When Joel was sick, she gave him medicines and food many times while risking her life going outside to find what he needed.
- She helped David and James when they offered her medicines, and also refused to give them her name to protect Joel and herself.
- She shows strong disgust to cannibalism and refuses to eat the food David gives her after he's kidnapped her.
- She killed David by smashing his face with a machete, preventing him from raping any more teenager and eating people.
- While at the end when Joel tells her the Fireflies don't need her and she's still a bit skeptical about that, she was still willing to trust him after he swore to her.
The Last of Us Part II[]
- While she was mad at Joel for lying to her despite the fact that he saved her, she eventually decided to forgive him after understanding his motives. She was also right to be mad at him for killing everyone at the Firefly hospital and taking away their only chance of making a cure.
- Thanks to her selflessness and sympathy, she was willing to sacrifice herself and take her own life to save billions of people, being one of the reasons she was mad at Joel in the first place.
- While she acted rudely towards Joel at the party when Seth called her and Dina dykes while he was willing to help them, she probably did this to not cause a fight between them and Seth.
- When she witnessed Joel get killed by Abby, she swore to avenge his death because of how mush she loves him and feels guilty for being mad at him. She also thinks that she owes him and Tommy, being one of the reasons she went on her revenge quest. She also wanted to help Tommy who could've gotten into trouble in his trip in Seattle.
- She didn't want Jesse to come with her, because she didn't want him to risk his life. She also shows anger when the WLF attacks Dina and Jesse because it wasn't their fault but her own.
- When she found out Dina was pregnant, she told her to stay at the theater and not move till she's done with the WLF.
- She felt horribly guilty when she realized she killed a pregnant woman, almost having a panic attack and feeling deeply remorseful.
- When Abby holds Tommy at gunpoint and threatens her, she surrenders and tosses her weapon away to prevent Tommy from being hurt.
- After Abby beat her and Dina to near death and tries to kill Dina, she begs Abby to spare her and tells her that she's pregnant.
- After being traumatized for killing Abby's friends, seeing Jesse die, and almost dying alongside Dina, she decided to give up on her revenge and live with her and her baby JJ in a farm to prevent any more damage, until she realizes that she still feels guilty for Joel and decides to go back when Tommy tells her he found Abby.
- She helps some prisoners escape from the Rattlers' mansion after taking out their leader, preventing them from enslaving and torturing other people.
- When she sees Abby and Lev hung and almost dying on the beach, she at first decides to help them out of mercy until she realizes she has to kill Abby.
- At the moment she was about to kill Abby, she eventually gives up and lets them go after realizing this is not what Joel would want from her. She then decides to redeem herself and live a new life without violence.
What Makes Her Inconsistent?[]
- Everyone in The Last of Us is an anti-hero and a survivor, and Ellie is no exception to that, especially with Part II where she becomes mush more corrupted.
- She is very lethal in combat and kills her enemies in very brutal ways, even if sometimes it's out of self-defense, such as slashing a machete into David's face very rapidly and brutally, while David deserved it, that still one of the violent actions Ellie had done.
- She can be a bit rude and jerkish at some moments, such as her grudge against Joel for saving her or scolding Jesse for coming to risk his life.
- She becomes particularily villainous in Part II, and does a lot of heinous things such as torturing Nora to death, unknowingly killing a pregnant Mel, and threatning Lev's life when Abby refuses to fight her.
