I've got balls of steel!
~ Duke Nukem, his most famous quote
It's time to kick ass and chew bubblegum...and I'm all out of gum.
~ Duke Nukem at the start of Episode 3 of Duke Nukem 3D entitled "Shrapnel City"

Duke Nukem is the titular protagonist of the 2D sidescroller/first-third person shooter video game series of the same name.

Originally characterized as a disgruntled TV viewer hired by the CIA to save the Earth from Dr. Proton, whom he wanted revenge on for interrupting his favorite soap opera, he came fully fleshed out in the later installments as a traditional action hero in the sequel, and his personality was later defined as a confident, aggressive, somewhat politically incorrect, wise-cracking hyper-masculine man, whose missions revolve around killing aliens that have invaded Earth. He is best known for his jet pack, his trademark sunglasses, carrying either a golden IMI Desert Eagle pistol or a Colt M1911, constantly smoking a cigar, his expertise in firearms, his love for women (especially big-breasted and scantily clad ones), and for cracking one-liners, most of which reference action movie stars such as Clint Eastwood, Arnold Schwarzenegger and others.

He was originally voiced by Joe Siegler and Todd Replogle in Duke Nukem II, and is currently voiced by Jon St. John, who has voiced the character since Duke Nukem 3D, and has also voiced Big the Cat and E-123 Omega in the Sonic the Hedgehog video games, while his Japanese voice was provided by Fumihiko Tachiki, who also voiced Yondu in the Japanese dub of the Guardians of the Galaxy films.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

In General[]

  • He has saved Earth from alien invasions and rescued captive babes several times over.

Duke Nukem[]

  • He foiled his arch nemesis Dr. Proton’s plot to take over Earth with his Techbots.

Duke Nukem II[]

  • He put a stop to the Rigelatin’s scheme to enslave Earth and killed the Rigelatin commander.
  • He initially thought about conquering Earth as “King Duke”, but quickly decided against it, acknowledging that “it doesn’t sound right.”

Duke Nukem 3D[]

  • Stopped a massive alien invasion of Earth and defeated the Battlelord, the Overlord, the Cycloid Emperor, the Alien Queen (who bears a striking resemblance to the Xenomorph Queen from Alien) and the Cycloid Incinerator.
  • In the add-on “Duke it Out in D.C.”, he stopped a hostile alien takeover of Washington, D.C. and rescued the President from the Cycloid Emperor.

Duke Nukem: Time to Kill[]

  • He travels back in time to the Old West, medieval Europe, and Ancient Rome to foil Moloch and the Draks’ plan to rewrite history in their image.

Duke Nukem: Zero Hour[]

  • He travels back in time to the Wild West and Victorian era Europe to prevent a future where the aliens have devastated the Earth with nuclear war, driving humanity to near extinction.

Duke Nukem: Land of the Babes[]

  • He joins a female freedom fighter named Jane and the United Babe Resistance in defeating Silverback and the Alien Slave Boss in a dystopian future where male humans have been all but exterminated and the females have been made into slaves for the aliens.
  • After Silverback and the Alien Slave Boss have been killed, Duke and the Babes take part in “Operation: Repopulation”, where he partakes in sex with numerous women in order to repopulate the Earth.

Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project[]

  • He defeats Mech Morphix and foils his plan to mutate insects and other creatures into monstrosities in New York City.

Duke Nukem Forever[]

  • He destroys the Hoover Dam to prevent more aliens from invading Earth since the dam was used as a wormhole for their entrance.
  • Kills the Cycloid Emperor.
  • After the President has been killed by the Cycloid Emperor and the former has been revealed as a traitor secretly working on the side of the aliens, Duke announces he’s running as the 69th President of the United States.
  • In the DLC campaign “The Doctor Who Cloned Me”, he kills the Alien Empress and frees the captive babes.

Duke Nukem: Glorious Bastard (comic)[]

  • He travels back in time near the end of World War II to join a band of fighters in battling the Nazis and the Vrilerinnen, a race of alien-human hybrids bent on creating more super-beings to help Adolf Hitler win the war.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • Saying that he is too lethal to qualify as Near Pure Good would be a HUGE understatement. While his kills are righteous kills considering the aliens he fights are irredeemable monsters who pose a galactic threat to Earth, he enjoys killing his enemies and has a tendency to mutilate and desecrate their corpses in rather gruesome and over-the-top ways, which no PG or NPG hero would EVER be seen doing. Some examples being:
    • In Episode 2 of Duke Nukem 3D titled “Lunar Apocalypse”, where he threatens to rip off the Overlord’s head and shit down his neck, and after he kills him, he literally carries out that threat.
    • Episode 4 of said game titled “The Birth”, where after he kills the Alien Queen, he plants a pipe bomb in her vagina, causing it to explode and leaving her arms and legs as her remains.
    • Episode 5 of the same game titled “Alien World Order”, where he threatens to rip the Cycloid Incinerator’s testicles off and roast them on an open fire, and he does exactly that after killing him.
    • The final boss battle with the Cycloid Emperor in Duke Nukem Forever, where he rips out his eye and pisses in his eye socket after killing him, but not before threatening to do so before they fight.
  • He is extremely arrogant and egotistical, as he more often than not boasts about how awesome he is. He even goes so far as to write an autobiography titled “Why I’m So Great.”
  • He has xenophobic tendencies towards aliens, though considering how the aliens he encounters try to conquer and enslave the Earth multiple times, this is justified.
  • He is a very perverted and hedonistic womanizer, as he enjoys being surrounded by big-breasted and scantily clad (sometimes even naked) women, and throws money at strippers when he should be evacuating them out of an active war zone.
  • He can be a jerk a lot of the time, as he constantly taunts his enemies. While most of it is justified considering the enemies he fights, there are times where he takes his taunting too far:
    • He relies on gallows humor, as sometimes when he encounters a mutilated corpse of another person, he would make a pun at their expense. For example, when he stumbles across the mutilated corpse of what appears to be Doomguy from Doom, he retorts, “Hmm… that’s one doomed space marine.”
    • But by far his most infamous jerk moment and quite possibly his biggest prevention from being Near Pure Good (even more so than the desecration of his enemies’ corpses) is in Duke Nukem Forever. In Chapter 8 of the game, he encounters the Holsom Twins being held captive in the alien hive and being impregnated. Instead of rescuing them like he would any other babe, he makes an exceptionally cruel rape joke towards them, saying “Looks like you’re…f**ked.” He then lets them give birth to baby Octabrains, causing them to explode violently. This was also hypocritical on his part because earlier in the game, he expressed genuine anger at them being kidnapped, vowing “the alien motherf**kers are gonna pay for this.”
      • However, despite his callousness towards the deceased twins, he still vowed to avenge their deaths, and it is revealed during a conversation with Dylan in the DLC campaign “The Doctor Who Cloned Me” that he was emotionally affected by their deaths. This does not make the rape joke any less of a prevention, as rape is a serious crime that is shunned by society, and joking about rape is treated as incredibly insensitive.

Trivia[]

  • He is the only character from Duke Nukem to be Inconsistently Admirable as well as the most admirable character from the series.
  • His “Looks like you’re f**ked” comment to the captive and impregnated Holsom Twins in Duke Nukem Forever, aside from one of the biggest preventions from him being NPG, is considered one of the most controversial moments in the franchise as many were appalled by Duke making light of a serious matter like rape as well as his nonchalant attitude towards their deaths as it was out of character for him because he always rescued Earth’s women.
  • Several of his one-liners reference other characters, including Doomguy, Luke Skywalker, The Terminator, Ash Williams, Donkey Kong, John Rambo, Master Chief and Forrest Gump. Coincidentally, they are all also Inconsistently Admirable (except for Master Chief and Forrest Gump, who are Near Pure Good and Pure Good respectively; the T-800 from Terminator 2 is NPG while the Terminator 3 version is IA, and Donkey Kong's mainstream counterpart is IA while the Super Mario Bros. Movie version of him is NPG).
  • It is unknown whether or not his movie counterpart will be Inconsistently Admirable since a movie based on the games has been confirmed.
