Michael? Why now? You've waited ten years. Why come back now? I knew this day would come. Don't go to Haddonfield. If you want another victim, take me. But leave those people in peace. Please, Michael?....God damn you.
~ Dr. Loomis to Michael Myers in Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers

Dr. Samuel J. Loomis is the deuteragonist of John Carpenter's Halloween franchise.

He is the former psychiatrist of masked serial killer Michael Myers. His history is complicated by the fact that the series follows several conflicting continuities. Halloween H20: Twenty Years Later and Resurrection ignore the events of Halloween 4, 5, and 6, splitting the series into two separate timelines both originating from the original film and its sequel.

He was portrayed by the late Donald Pleasance in the original, and Tom Jones Jr. in Halloween Kills. After Pleasance's passing he was voiced by Tom Kane in Halloween H20: Twenty Years Later and Colin Mahan both in Halloween (2018) and Halloween Kills.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

In General[]

  • While he repeatedly goes out of his way to try and kill Michael, it’s completely justified due to how dangerous Michael is and was to prevent him from causing the deaths of more innocent lives (especially Laurie Strode and her daughter Jamie Lloyd).
  • While he usually serious, he never darkens the mood of the story.

All Timelines[]

  • After Michael Myers murdered his older sister Judith at the age of six on Halloween night in 1963, Loomis initially spent seven years trying to rehabilitate him.
  • Once he realized Michael was really pure evil, he spent another eight years trying to lock him up so he wouldn’t hurt anyone and was successful at it until Michael did manage to escape on October 30th, 1978.
  • After Michael attacked Marion Chambers and stole her car, Loomis checked to see if she was okay.
  • The next day, he allied himself with Sheriff Lee Bracket in an attempt to catch and stop Michael.
  • When he noticed Tommy Doyle and Lindsey Wallace running from the Doyle’s house, he immediately went to check and see what was going on he and managed to save Laurie Strode from getting killed by Michael by shooting him six times.

Halloween II[]

  • Upon seeing that Michael’s body had vanished after he shot him, he had a neighbor call the police to warn them that he was still on the loose.
  • When he found out that Laurie was Michael’s younger sister and that he was planning on killing her like he did to Judith, he along with Marion Chambers and Terrence Gummell traveled to Haddonfield Memorial Hospital in order to save her.
  • Upon hearing Laurie banging at the door of the hospital, Loomis rushed in to let her in and briefly halted Michael by shooting him 5 times.
  • After shooting Michael, he had Marion call the cops and briefly comforted Laurie and even asked her to see if she was alright.
  • When Gummell examined Michael’s body, Loomis tried to warn him that he was still alive and to get away from him. Unfortunately Michael immediately woke up and proceeded to slit his throat.
  • While in the operating room with Laurie, he gave her a gun to protect herself which led to her shooting Michael point blank in both of his eyes.
  • Despite having been stabbed, he still distracted Michael away from Laurie which allowed her to escape.
  • Following this, he turned on all the oxygen gas in the room which led to him attempting a self sacrifice by pulling out his lighter and causing an explosion which engulfed Michael in flames.
4-6 Timeline[]
  • Upon hearing that the bus that Michael was being transported had an accident, Loomis went to go check.
  • Upon seeing the mutilated bodies of coroners and ambulance drivers, he immediately went on a mission to go find him.
  • When he encountered Michael at a gas station, he pleaded for Michael to spare the citizens of Haddonfield and kill him instead. Unfortunately, Michael obviously refused.
  • Teamed up with Sheriff Ben Meeker in order to catch Michael and stop him again and also warned Haddonfield of Michael's return.
  • When he found out that Michael was now going to kill his niece Jamie Lloyd, he went out of his way to protect her.
  • After he Michael had killed Deputy Logan, Kelly Meeker, and Brady, and had knocked out Rachael; Loomis managed to find Jamie and tried to hide Jamie in a school to protect her from Michael.
  • When Jamie sensed Michael's presence at her home, he called Rachael and told her to get out.
  • Worked with Ben meeker again and had the police look out for Michael.
  • Had two officers watch over Jamie and Tina to make sure that they were alright.
  • When in the Myers' house, he briefly tried one last attempt to reason with Michael by trying to urge him into fighting back against his rage and redeem himself by bonding with his niece only for Michael to attack him.
  • Managed to trap Michael and drug him which led to him being temporally being locked up before Wynn eventually broke him free.
  • Upon hearing Jamie’s cry for help on the radio, Loomis prepared to once again face off against Michael.
  • Teamed up with Tommy Doyle to find and stop Michael.
  • In the producer's cut, after finding Jamie dead in the hospital, he mourned her death and blamed himself for having failed to save her.
  • Once Tommy told him that the Strode family was living in the strode house, he warned Debra to move out of the house with her family so that Michael wouldn't kill them.
  • Upon hearing Kara and Danny banging on the door, he and Tommy unlocked the door so that they could get in.
  • After Dr. Wynn kidnapped Kara and Danny and the baby and brought them to Smith’s grove, Loomis and Tommy traveled all the way there to rescue him.
  • In the producer's cut; when Tommy, Kara, and Danny were locked in and were getting chased by Michael, he unlocked the gate by shooting it and thus allowing them to escape.
  • Advised Tommy alongside Kara and Danny to leave him behind and leave as far away from Haddonfield as possible.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He is shown to be wrathful and reckless at times in his attempts to kill Michael with him perfectly willing to threaten people with force. Often times, this resulted in innocent people either getting hurt or killed. For example:
    • In Halloween II, he pulled a gun on Ben Tramer whom he mistook for Michael due to him wearing a similar mask and attempted to shoot him though Brackett interfered. This led to Ben getting distracted by the whole ordeal and accidentally getting hit by a police car which crashed and pinned him to a van and caused an explosion. Loomis did show remorse for this though.
    • Later on in that same film, after Marion told him that Laurie Strode was Michael’s younger sister and that he was going after her, he fired a warning shot at a window and forced Gummell to drive all the way to the Haddonfield Memorial Hospital in order to save her despite the fact that he would have possibly lost his job afterwards. Though in this case, it did lead to him managing to save Laurie.
    • In Halloween 4, at end, he was going to shoot Jamie after she had stabbed her foster mom due to believing Michael's evil had passed on to her but was stopped by Meeker.
    • In Halloween 5, he was perfectly willing to use Jamie as bait and exploit her psychic Powers in order to lure in Michael and when Deputy Charlie tried to get out of the Myers house and radio in the other officers, Loomis smashed his radio and pulled a gun on him while demanding that he stay in due to Michael being inside.
  • While normally compassionate, he still has lots of jerkish moments as he acts very cynical towards the staff at Smith’s grove due their incompetence in terms of watching Michael. He’s at his worst however in 5, where he is much more aggressive towards most of the characters in that film and even at one point scares Jamie when he demands her to try and tell him where Michael was.
