~ His last words before his supposed death |
Dr. James Sheridan, also simply known as Sheridan or the Annoying Neighbour, is the overarching antagonist of Glitch Productions computer-animated web series Meta Runner.
He serves as the overarching protagonist of Season 1, the overarching antagonist of Season 2 and the main antagonist of Season 3. He also appears as a supporting protagonist in the prequel comic book series Meta Runner: SOURCE.
He was an ex-TAS Corp scientist and the mastermind behind Project Blue, a mysterious project where he planned on creating an AI called T.A.R.I. (stands for Turbo Artificial Rapid Intelligence) to assist Meta Runners in order to avoid getting fired by Derek Lucks. His dream was to use the project to become known in the gaming industry, but after an accident that ended the project prematurely, he abandoned this dream and went down a path of insanity. He is Tari's archenemy and creator.
Despite his role as an antagonist in the series, he has several notable acts of heroism such as in the prequel comic book series where he was a father figure towards Tari and was eventually revealed to be the inventor of the titular Meta Runner arms that helped gamers all around the world at the cost of one of their arms prior to his fall.
He is voiced by Anthony Sardinha.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
- Despite his horrible treatment by his boss Derek Lucks and his instability, he remained very optimistic and polite and possesses a clear moral agency nonetheless.
- He created the iconic Meta Runner arm and intended to help enhance their gaming abilities at the cost of one of their arms. This helped several people improve in gaming and embrace it more, whether Corp runners or not.
- His Meta Runner arms made TASCorp's biggest gamers Masa Shimamoto, Belle Fontiere and Lucinia Porter, as well as their manager Derek Lucks famous and renowned in the gaming industry and keep his reputation for many years, even though Lucks was the one who stole credit for his invention.
- In order to retain his job and become a legend, he created Tari, an artificial intelligence that could complete any game in the record time and could warp into games.
- He intended to use these abilities on an ordinary Meta Runner named Lucinia so that she can go back into the spotlight after Lucks rejected her in favor of Masa and Belle.
- He served as a very good father figure towards Tari, influencing her to become the Pure Good hero she is today and intended to make her famous with her gaming powers. He had her win several games, such as Ultra Jump Mania, Battle Blaze, Tempest and Hidden Heroes all due to his influential mentorship.
- Despite Meta Runner's high admirable standards, he passes them for creating the arms that would help them accomplish a lot in their journey, which was not done for selfish intent at first.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He is extremely arrogant and egotistical since he self-proclaims that he's TASCorp's best scientist several times.
- He is a hero by proxy since he was pushed into becoming altruistic over the threat that he was going to get fired.
- He is very greedy since he consistently wants to be put in the spotlight and paid for selfish reasons. He also has an addiction to coffee that causes him to become more high over time.
- He is an extremist since he does several dangerous things in his experiments to keep his job and reach his lifetime goal, before completely subverting such traits with his evil acts.
- Even before his fall to villainy, he was still very reckless and inconsiderate of others since he did not think before trying to implement Tari's powers to Lucinia how dangerous this task would be. He did not even think about how much this would affect the physical and mental health of his own, Lucinia's or any other scientist accompanying him. This resulted in Tari having amnesia when waking up and Lucinia falling unconscious for a while due to missing a part of her.
- Even before his fall, he is hypocritical, since he sets up many standards for Tari to follow that he is scared of following himself, such as putting her life in risk in video games but is deeply scared of facing them himself and will try to retreat for his own safety. He also killed Lucks for selfish reasons but then he became worse than him.
- He is mischievous since under a disguise, he consistently annoyed Masa for no reason. However, this was also subverted once his other actions had gone too far to be considered mischievous, making this a minor prevention.
- He is a sadomasochist since he takes several enjoyment over seeing people get beaten in their video games and harmed and delights in his own unstable condition.
- Last but not least, he ultimately falls into villainy after his supposed death by framing Masa for Lucks' death, hiring Evelyn Claythorne for his goals to kill Tari and leave several Meta Runners to die in his server out of mutual sadism and goals to become famous.
- He becomes a Pure Evil villain after that, thus fully subverting and losing ALL of his positive and altruistic traits and humanity, such as his genuine care for Lucinia and Tari, his insecurities, his affable nature, his altruistic goals, any sympathy his backstory may have had and several of his comedic moments. Although Tari gave him an offer over peace, he rejected it and continued to embrace his evil nature until the end.
Trivia[]
- Currently, Dr. Sheridan is the only Meta Runner character, as well as the only non-SMG4 character created by Kevin and Luke Lerdwichagul, to be Inconsistently Admirable.
- Surprisingly enough, he’s the only GLITCH Inconsistently Admirable to not be an On & Off character due to choosing to stay bad.
- He is one of four Pure Evil villains to be Inconsistently Admirable, with the others being Light Yagami, Griffith, and King Edward V.
- It is possible that if his supposed death in Season 1 remained a death not accounting for tie-in media set before Meta Runner, he would've been Pure Good or Near Pure Good, since Seasons 2 & 3 made him have several corrupting factors and fall too far into villainy.
