Intelligence is not a privilege, it’s a gift and you use it for the good of mankind.
~ Doctor Octopus to Peter Parker in Spider-Man 2.
I will not die a monster.
~ Doctor Octopus redeeming himself by destroying his fusion reactor for good.

Dr. Otto Octavius, later known as Doctor Octopus, is the main antagonist of the 2004 superhero film Spider-Man 2, the second installment in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy.

A peppy, but ultimately kindhearted scientist and friend of Peter Parker, he unfortunately lost his sanity due to the influence of his most recent invention, four mechanical tentacles that eventually got a mind of their own after an experiment with his fusion reactor went horribly wrong. After the incident, Octavius became a vile madman and the greatest foe Peter Parker has ever faced.

He was portrayed by Alfred Molina.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

  • He was a good person before being influenced by the tentacles to do evil, but he eventually redeemed himself and became good again.
  • Even when he was corrupted by the tentacles' advance AI, he still retained qualities from his good self.
  • Was good friends with Peter before becoming a villain, even giving him advice about love and how intelligence is a gift for the good of mankind.
  • Built a fusion reactor to help the world by providing them with renewable energy.
  • Was horrified at the tentacles killing the doctors and nurses in the hospital room, showing he didn't want the tentacles to kill them.
  • Upon realizing that Spider-Man and Peter were the same person, he smiled with pride and came to respect him for using his good quality to help people in need.
  • With Peter's words, he finally resisted his tentacles' influence and sacrificed himself by drowning with his fusion reactor to save the people of New York.
  • Overall, all of his heinous acts were for the selfless goal for providing renewable power for the entire world, even though they were very misguided. In fact he initially refused to steal the money to rebuild the reactor before the tentacles convinced him to.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He is an extremist. While his goal is admirable, the methods he uses to achieve it are very extreme.
  • He isn't incorruptible, as he was a good person before being influenced by the tentacles into being evil.
    • In his Doctor Octopus persona, he behaves rudely and aggressively towards everyone shouting at them.
    • Fortunately, he did redeeming himself and being good again.
  • Even though his wife's death was a tragic accident, it was caused entirely by his own arrogance, since he was warned about the risks of his fusion reactor, but didn't listen. Even when the artificial sun reached critical level and endangered the spectators, he refused to shut the machine off and even stopped Spider-Man from cutting off the power. This allowed the artificial sun to absorb more metal, including the glass windows that eventually killed his wife. After being freed from the tentacles' influence, he takes accountability and feels remorse for her death.
  • Although he suffers from moral agency issues due to the tentacles manipulating him, there's no evidence that he is entirely controlled against his will—rather, he is influenced by them, meaning he is still partially responsible for his villainous acts.
    • While under their influence, he rebuilt his fusion reactor despite how it almost destroying the city. He even committed horrible deeds to accomplish this goal including robbing a bank, kidnapping Aunt May then proceeding to drop her off a building while quipping "butterfingers", threatening to kill Harry if he refused to give him the tritium for his fusion reactor, kidnapping Mary Jane for ransom so Spider-Man can fight him, and breaking the gear shift of a train which would have killed dozens of people if Spidey hadn't saved them.
    • Just before his redemption, he initially refused to shut his reactor down and was about to choke Peter, until the latter reminds the advices to him, this also allow him to realizing his actions and manage to control his tentacles, therefore made him to find the way to shut it down.

Trivia[]

  • He is the only version of Doctor Octopus to be approved Inconsistently Admirable.
    • His alternative counterpart is scaled differently due to originating from the same timeline but having his sacrifice retconned by him being pulled to the MCU before it happened, despite being more of a hero than him.
