~ Dexter Morgan's catchphrase and his most famous quote, noting his insatiable desire to kill. |
Dexter Morgan is the titular main protagonist of the crime drama series Dexter.
He is a family man and blood spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department, though he also lives a double life as a vigilante serial killer. He was taught by his foster father Harry to only kill those who deserved it in order to channel his urges for "good." Dexter claims to have no feelings, and indeed exhibits many sociopathic traits, but genuinely does have love for his family (especially his foster sister Debra) and retains protective instincts towards innocents, particularly children.
He is portrayed by Michael C. Hall.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He is a very lethal anti-hero and generally a hero by proxy, as he primarily kills to indulge his own urges and avoid getting caught, rather than to protect civilians. In fact, he has targeted innocent people himself, such as killing a man wrongfully suspected of serial murder, murdering a random man simply for insulting Rita (for which he showed no remorse), attempting to kill Maria LaGuerta to keep his crimes from being exposed, and killing Sergeant Logan to escape his jail cell.
- He frequently interferes with police investigations by planting or disturbing evidence and disrupting internal affairs, usually selfishly to protect various criminals from prosecution to kill them for himself and to avoid getting caught. He also frequently commits other crimes to achieve his goals, such as breaking and entering, vandalism, assault, theft, among others.
- He manipulates and lies to many people close to him, which not only leads to emotional unrest but also endangers their lives. In fact, many of his actions indirectly lead to the deaths of people he cares about, such as Rita, who was killed by the Trinity Killer due to Dexter's hesitation; Harry, who killed himself after witnessing what he had turned his son into; and Debra, who was shot by Oliver Saxon after Dexter left him to get arrested instead.
- Furthermore, while he believed faking his death was the best thing for his loved ones, it's shown in New Blood to have had a terrible effect on Harrison. Also, while he did care for Harrison and initially hoped that he would live as a normal child, it is implied that he was actually somewhat excited after learning that Harrison shared his homicidal tendencies, so he could treat him like an apprentice.
- He is often seen torturing or mocking his victims in a ritualistic fashion, which serves no purpose in protecting others or satisfying his urges and is mainly sadistic.
- Like most serial killers, he is very arrogant and egotistical.
