What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- Although he is a lot more noble and selfless than Gumball, he's still On & Off, as he does heinous deeds in various episodes. While in most of the shenanigans with Gumball he was either trying to do the right thing, attempting to stop him, or being manipulated by him, there were also times when Darwin was a willing participant — not only with his brother, but with the rest of his family as well. The following are some of the most egregious examples, though certainly not all of them:
- In "The Recipe," Darwin and Gumball violently murdered Anton fifty times to discover why he always comes back to life. Their methods included crushing him with a bowling ball, giving him a heart attack, using him as bread in Tobias' sandwich, shredding him in a paper shredder, blowing him up, crushing him with a door, launching a baseball through his face, having Tina stomp on him, and letting birds consume him.
- In the same episode, he shows complete disregard for Anton's autonomy and the laws of nature by repeatedly cloning him. This inadvertently leads to all the Anton clones being murdered by Ant-One, whom the brothers callously threw in the trash after discovering he was burnt.
- In "The Laziest," Darwin and Gumball make Larry lose all his jobs, aggravate him into driving his car off a cliff, and make his fiancée break up with him, eventually making him depressed, all so he can beat Richard in a "lazy-off" contest after he's lost everything.
- In "The Nuisance," he helps his family turn Elmore into a disaster area by destroying property, causing chaos, and ultimately helping burn the entire town down.
- In "The Outside", he joins his family with torturing Frankie by making his visit at their home feel like a prison. He even attacks him for making eye contact.
- In "The Stars," Darwin and Gumball enslave Larry by threatening him with poor ratings, forcing him to cater to their every whim, including inventing a new species.
- In "The Copycats," Darwin and the Watterson family try to get their rival copycats to kill themselves by performing dangerous stunts, simply because the copycats were mimicking them on TV.
- In "The Menu," he helped Richard and Gumball kidnap and psychologically torture Larry just so he could tell them the name of a secret menu item. He along with Gumball then encourages Richard to eat as many Elmore burgers as possible to get the secret burger, pushing Richard close to the point of a heart attack.
- In some episodes, he shows a very possessive attitude towards Gumball.
- In "The Bros," he is upset of Gumball's decision to spend time with Penny, and he tries this best to separate them just so he could have his brother all to himself. He even hits her during basketball by smacking the ball in her face even though they're on the same team. While they eventually reconcile, Darwin lies about accepting their relationship and never learns from his mistake.
- In "The BFFs," he attempts to cook Gumball's old friend Fuzzy, and would later attempt to hits him from behind with a shovel out of jealousy and unwarranted suspicion. Even though it's vindicated by the end where Fuzzy is revealed as a villain, it doesn't justify his actions.
- He is often an extremist and incompetent, as even with good intentions, he can cause serious trouble, and despite his näiveté, he is fully capable of recognizing right from wrong.
- For example, in "The Safety," Darwin, through his own volition, becomes a dictator of Elmore, enforcing extremely strict "safety" precautions that prevent people from performing basic tasks like running, walking around town, or eating anything that is more complex than molecules. He monitors the entire town as a tyrant with surveillance and plans to expand his control across the globe.
- Regarding his incompetence, some ill-advised plans to help include him trying to set up a "perfect date" for Gumball and Penny in "The Bros" that ends up blowing up their backyard shed and setting a fire at Penny's house, and getting Marvin Finkleheimer falsely arrested and tasered by the police in "The Crew" because he believed he tried to send out a hit on Louie.
- He is wrathful at times and can act like a jerk. Some examples include him aggressively attacking a mailbox with a shovel in "The Treasure," growing frustrated with Gumball's gloomy morning attitude in "The Gripes" and attempting to hit him in the head with a toaster, destroying everything in Banana Joe's locker and attempting to fight him in "The Banana," among many more. Most infamously, in "The Words," he makes it his mission to insult and bully everyone around school after learning how to "express himself," though he does feel bad about this later.
- He can also be callous and inconsiderate, such as kicking Rob in a manhole simply because he was being annoying in "The Pony," or kicking Leslie through a window in "The Fraud" so that he doesn't hear about Principal Brown's plan to explode the school.
- He has many moments of being mischievous. For instance, him engaging in a prank war with his dad in "The Prank" that ends him floating on a raft down a stream, annoying Nicole all day in "The Limit" just for a piece of candy, or doing shenanigans with Gumball while time is paused in "The Countdown" like pulling Gary Hedges' pants down.
- Although he often has a sense of integrity, there are many moments that prove he is not above lying, stealing or tricking people to achieve certain outcomes.
