D-16, currently known as Megatron, is the deuteragonist of the 2024 animated science fiction action film Transformers One.
He is the best friend and brother-in-arms of Orion Pax, but as revelations regarding the true nature of Cybertron and its leaders broke him, he embraced his villainous nature and became the the tyrannical leader of the Decepticons (formerly the High Guards) after he kills Sentinel and took Megatronus' stolen Cog from him and implanted it into his chest.
He was voiced by Bryan Tyree Henry, who also portrayed Lemon in Bullet Train.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
- He had been a friend of Orion Pax since they met and promised to have his back when mining energon, as well as trying to tone down his mischievousness prior to the events of the film, preferring to simply stay on protocol.
- He helped Orion Pax hide from angry security guards trying to kill him.
- He assisted in helping Orion Pax save a trapped Jazz despite the fact it got their boss Elita-1, fired.
- He covered Orion Pax for Darkwing even though he got punched himself. Although he did punch Orion to do so, it was only to protect him since Darkwing would've been far more brutal with him.
- He helps Orion Pax in his attempt to win the Iacon 5000 despite being roped into it against his will earlier and threating to kill Orion if they survived.
- He later helped and accompany Orion Pax and his friends to find Alpha Trion.
- He later decided to bring proof of Sentinel's betrayal to Iacon in spite of his deep murderous hatred for the false prime.
- He won the trust of the High Guard by defeating Starscream in battle which would later play a role in defeating Sentinel Prime. He would also fight against Sentinel's forces when they attack the High Guard's base.
- While it was Orion and Elita who came up with the plan, some credit can go to D-16 for winning the High Guard over, as made it easier for Orion and Elita to cooperate with them together than without D-16 winning them over when he got captured by Airachnid.
- He assists in defending the High Guard base when it was under attack by Airachnid.
- While being held captive at Sentinel's tower, D-16 openly defies the former by refusing to kneel before him and rightfully calls him out by saying that he will never be as great as Megatronus Prime, even though it resulted in him being tortured afterwards.
- After being freed by Soundwave, he directly takes on Sentinel himself.
- While he did shot Orion, that was purely an accident at first since he was only trying to shoot Sentinel and Orion was the one who got in the way. He even saved his life and was having a remorseful breakdown, but he eventually subverted this by dropping him in Cybertron's core.
- He later puts an end to Sentinel Prime by tearing him in half which was justified for Sentinel Prime's crimes, although it was extremely brutal.
- Even as Megatron, he still showed honor to Orion (now Optimus Prime), almost tearing up once he was banished from Iacon by his former best friend and shows respect to him.
- Although the Admirable Standards are pretty high, D-16 stands out due to holding off Sentinel long enough for the others to expose him and ultimately defeating him afterwards, bringing an end to his tyranny for good.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- Even before his fall from grace, he showed multiple corrupting factors that prevent him from being NPG in the first place:
- He is VERY wrathful and lethal, as he killed a trooper and nearly killed Starscream if Orion had not intervened.
- This also makes him an extremist, as he was also willing to use very lethal force against Sentinel to rally the High Guard, before subverting this trait and only being focused by revenge and damning others that are not him.
- He is jerkish as he said he'd "transform into a shovel" to beat Orion up and said if he survives the Iacon 5000, he'd kill Orion. Though even though those are comedic moments, those are still a bit jerkish even then.
- He becomes an anti-hero once he gains Onyx's cog, deciding to kill Sentinel despite Orion trying to convince him otherwise, which ultimately contributed to his downfall.
- He is VERY wrathful and lethal, as he killed a trooper and nearly killed Starscream if Orion had not intervened.
- He becomes a fallen hero and the new villain at the climax of the film as Megatron thanks to Sentinel corrupting him. After this, he never redeems himself, even rejecting Orion’s pleas to stop his descent to the dark side.
- He betrays Orion Pax by letting him die after being done with saving him out of pure spite of his morality getting in the way of his goals and for not letting him kill Sentinel.
- He threw away Onyx's cog in favor of Megatronus' despite the fact it was gifted to him by Alpha Trion even if Megatronus was his favorite Prime after all.
- He attempted to destroy Iacon and those weren't even involved with Sentinel Prime's acts by playing the Hitler card and even tried to kill both B-127 and Elita-1 despite them being his closest friends.
- After being exiled he will likely plan his vengeance on Optimus and start the Great War like most other versions of him do, which would lead to all the terrible events that happened in the franchise and the autobots and Decepticons fighting each other.
- He is a hypocrite, as he calls out Sentinel a traitor when he betrayed Cybertron himself by attempting to destroy Iacon and kill Optimus Prime. Even Optimus himself calls D-16 a traitor as well. To be fair, him calling Sentinel a traitor before Orion became Optimus holds to some degree as he called Sentinel a traitor to Cybertron by selling the planet and it’s people to the Quintessons.
- Even though he now possessed a strong hatred toward the Primes, he still idolize Megatronus Prime, name himself after him, using his cog and face as the emblem of the Decepticons. Furthermore, his reason is because of Sentinel's actions, which isn't justified since Sentinel was never even a Prime but rather a phony.
- Despite starting off as an extremist who genuinely wanted to free his fellow miners, his villainous actions go far past it since he now only seems to be focused on getting revenge.
- He was so consumed by hatred and anger that he didn't even thought that Orion only stop him from killing Sentinel and taking the shot to prevent his friend from being consumed by the darkness and because usurping a leader by killing them would left behind a bad image, he instead misinterpret Orion's actions as him believing Sentinel's death wasn't deserved, which is something he consider the last straw that would cause him to drop his former friend to his death.
Trivia[]
- He is the fifth version of Megatron to be Inconsistently Admirable after his Japanese Generation One, IDW. Unicron Trilogy, Cyberverse, and Bayverse Version, as well as the third version of the character to be both Inconsistently Admirable and Heinous alongside his Japanese Generation One and IDW selves too.
- He and his Unicron Trilogy counterpart are the only versions of Megatron to be IA and not be redeemed; in fact, he starts as a hero but then becomes fallen as the film progresses.
- D-16's origins and motivation are heavily inspired by both his IDW and Aligned counterparts, taking inspiration from both of those versions' rise to power as a means of liberating Cybertron from corruption, tragically losing himself in darkness in the process.
- Ironically, D-16's IA status also comes from the fandom's preference for the character to be purely evil like his Generation One cartoon counterpart.
