~ Curly talking about himself and Jimmy. |
Curly is the deuteragonist of the 2024 psychological horror game Mouthwashing and a minor character in the narrative adventure horror game How Fish Is Made's expansion, The Last One and Then Another.
He served as a pilot for the Tulpar, a long-haul freighter spaceship operated by the intergalactic delivery corporation Pony Express. Following a ship crash caused by his former best friend Jimmy, Curly was severely injured and incapacitated, and the crash was blamed on him. He resided in the Medical bay while slowly watching the psychological downfall and death of each of the remaining crew members, all while being abused and mutilated by Jimmy. Jimmy eventually placed him in the final cryopod, intended to preserve him for twenty years on the off-chance he would be found. His ultimate fate is unknown.
His laughter, choking noises and screams were provided by Martin of Wrong Organ, the game's development team.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
- He was always a responsible and dependable captain who cared deeply for the crew of the Tulpar, striving to keep things running smoothly.
- He helped Jimmy land a job at Pony Express.
- He informed the crew about the end of the Pony Express, despite being instructed not to, out of a desire to keep them in the loop.
- He helped Daisuke get out of the emergency foam.
- When Anya confided that Jimmy had sexually assaulted her, he tried to address the situation by speaking with Jimmy. It's also clear that Anya found emotional support in Curly and trusted him the most among the ship, and upon assuming that she was looking to harm herself, Curly insisted that he would've done anything to help her.
- After Jimmy deliberately steered the ship toward an asteroid, Curly rushed to the cockpit and saved everyone by averting the crash, risking his life in the process. This act left him permanently maimed and incapacitated, sacrificing his physical well-being to save the crew.
- In Jimmy's hallucination, Curly expresses remorse, admitting that he could have protected Anya more effectively and prevented Jimmy from crashing the ship if he had acted more decisively.
- The argument that he saved the ship solely out of his own self-interest is unsupported, as there is no proof of this, and him showing remorse about failing to save everyone indicates that he did it for crew's own good, not his own.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- Despite any good intentions, his attempt to remediate the situation between Jimmy and Anya resulted in him enabling Jimmy's behavior by giving him the benefit of the doubt and essentially neglecting Anya's concerns. Rather than taking decisive action, he claimed that he "knew" Jimmy and could talk him through it despite Anya's insistence and distress and numerous red flags from Jimmy.
- This inadvertently spurs the main conflict of the game: after Jimmy says that he will "handle it" before dismissing Curly and his conversation with him, he goes to crash the ship, eventually leading to the death and/or psychological downfall of everyone aboard. This act of negligence is ultimately way too corrupting for him to be PG or NPG as a result.
