And as I always say, if it's not Baroque, don't fix it.
~ Cogsworth

Henry Cogsworth, better known simply as Cogsworth, is a supporting character in Disney's Beauty and the Beast franchise. He is Prince Adam's fussbudget, but jolly majordomo and butler who became a mantel clock during the Enchantress' spell.

Portrayals[]

  • From 1991 to 2005, he was voiced by the late David Ogden Stiers, who also voiced Jumba Jookiba in the Lilo & Stitch franchise.
  • In the Broadway adaptation, he was portrayed by the late Heath Lamberts.
  • In the 2017 live action adaptation of the same name, he was voiced and portrayed by Sir Ian McKellen, who also portrays Magneto in the X-Men Films.
  • Ever since Once Upon a Studio, he is voiced by Bob Joles.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

In General[]

  • He is a loyal majordomo to Prince Adam and wanted to make sure all the servants in the household perform accordingly to the Master's rules.
  • Despite sometimes being at odds, he is usually best friends with Lumiere and offers him a helping hand when problems arises. Cogsworth also views Lumiere like his youngest brother.
  • While Belle and the Beast are admirable, Cogsworth passes the admirable standards due to the moment where he rescues Lumiere from Lefou. so it can allow him to save Plumette and assist him in defeating the rioters from storming the castle with his leadership, as had it not been for Cogworth, Lumiere would have been melted alive and no one would have been able to defeat Lefou and the Villagers or save the castle.
    • Another heroic action that allows him to pass the admirable standards is where he put the rose back on the table so the Beast can defeat Forte, as had it not been for Cogsworth, it is possible that the rose would be destroyed and that could have interfered the Beast's heroic action to defeat Forte and save the castle.

Beauty and the Beast[]

  • He, alongside Lumiere and Mrs. Potts tried to help the Beast welcome Belle, who turned down the Beast's request to come down to dinner, much to their dismay.
  • He and Lumiere showed Belle around the castle and tried to prevent her from going to the West Wing.
  • When Belle was escaping from the Beast's bad temper, Cogsworth and Lumiere tried to stop her from going to the woods, though they were too late to stop her.
  • When Belle and the Beast started to fall in love, Cogsworth decided to lead the servants in cleaning and setting up a ballroom for Belle and the Beast in a key step to undo the curse.
  • Upon witnessing Gaston and his rioters, Cogsworth ordered Mrs Potts to warn the Beast and gives orders to his fellow servants to march to battle against the villagers.
  • When Lumiere is being melted alive by Lefou, Cogsworth slides down the banister to save Lumiere by poking Lefou in the rear end. Because of him, it allows Lumiere to save Plumette from Tom and lead all the servants to chase away Lefou and the rest of the villagers from the castle.
  • Speaking of which, he worked together with Lumiere in defusing the riot in the castle by leading the servants to victory against the villagers, saving the lives of everyone in the castle, including the Beast.
    • He also told the frightened villagers to stay out of the castle.
    • As a result, his brave actions in saving Lumiere and chasing away the villagers to save the castle resulted in Cogsworth making a positive impression on Lumiere and the other objects.
  • When the Beast "dies" and when the last petal falls, Cogsworth, alongside Lumiere and Mrs. Potts, expressed their sadness to the Beast's "death" and is shown to have comforted Mrs. Potts.
  • Upon becoming human again, he and the other servants reunited with a humanized Prince Adam.
  • During Adam and Belle's wedding, Cogsworth negotiated with Lumiere that they should let "bygones be bygones", even though they both get into an argument.

Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas[]

  • When learning from Lumiere about Christmas, Cogsworth changed his mind and agreed to celebrate Christmas, out of fear of the Beast's bad temper and told everyone to keep quiet.
  • He learned from the Beast that Belle and Chip are out looking for a Christmas tree, under Maestro Forte's lies. As a result, Cogsworth and Lumiere went to the Black Forest, where they tried to prevent Belle from drowning to death with the Christmas tree.
  • He and the other servants expressed their regret to Belle, who was locked up in the dungeon for leaving the castle.
  • After the Beast apologizes to Belle and decides to join the gang to celebrate Christmas, Cogsworth is shown congratulating him for changing his mind.
  • When Forte becomes more evil and with Lumiere’s help, Cogsworth performed another one of his most admirable acts when he prevented the rose from being destroyed by properly putting it back on the table. Because of this, it allows the Beast to easily defeat Forte and save the kingdom without any interference.
  • He and the other servants congratulated Belle and the Beast for saving Christmas and in the present day, he and Lumiere stopped arguing and came to the agreement that it was Belle and the Beast who saved Christmas.

Beauty and the Beast: Belle's Magical World[]

  • He assisted Webster, Le Plume and Crane to seek shelter from the cold weather.
  • In "Fifi's Folly", he and the other servants save Lumiere and Plumette from falling off the moat to their doom.
  • In Mrs. Potts' Party, he and Lumiere put aside their differences and rivalry in order to help prepare a better surprise party for Mrs. Potts.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • One of the main reasons he cannot be approved as NPG is because he's sometimes prone to being argumentative, stubborn, and bossy.
  • Despite being friends for the most part, he still gets into arguments with Lumiere from time to time, such as their conflicted view towards the castle regulations.
  • There are some moments where he can be somewhat aggressive with Lumiere, like fighting with him during the Be Our Guest song, and slapping him after the latter gratefully kisses him on the cheek after he saved him from being melted by LeFou.
  • He has many jerkish and arrogant moments that hold him a little bit consistently, as shown when he rudely views himself as the sole savior of Christmas, slapping Maurice after touching his pendulum without being polite, proclaiming that he’s in charge in a bossy tone, getting into a fight with Lumiere (especially over the fact of Belle being the one who broke the spell) for a weak reason, refusing to celebrate Christmas (though it was only for the Beast's former hatred of Christmas), along with other moments.
  • In Belle’s Magical World, he was responsible for causing a fallout between Belle and the Beast, which all started when he opened the door so the Beast can get fresh air from the cold.
    • Even though it was done under the Beast’s request, this is still too corrupting for NPG as Cogsworth showed no full regret for his careless action.
  • He can be somewhat semi-hypocritical at times:
    • Even though he did want pudding, he initially opposed to celebrating Christmas, even if it's understandable because of the Beast's curse taking place on Christmas Eve.
    • Even though he did invite Webster, Le Plume and Crane to seek shelter, he still got upset at the idea of Belle inviting Webster to the dining room.
    • He blamed Lumiere for sabatouging Mrs. Potts' party and ruining the kitchen, even though he was also involved in this quarrel just because he got upset of his papers being ruined.

Trivia[]

  • For a while, he was previously Heroic Benchmark, due to him being bog-standard and failing the admirable standards; but after a further discussion, the part where he saves Lumiere from being melted alive by is one of the main reasons Cogsworth got approved as IA, since Lumiere would have been melted alive, enabling Lefou and the villagers to terrorize the castle with no one capable in saving Lumiere and the whole castle from Lefou and the rioters, if it weren't for Cogsworth’s leadership and bravery. As a result, he is the only character from the Beauty and the Beast franchise to be IA and the second sidekick of Disney to be IA.
