Cloud Strife is the main protagonist of Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VII Remake, and its sequel film Advent Children, as well as a supporting character in Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus and a recurring character in the Kingdom Hearts series. He is an expert swordsman and mercenary who claims to be a former member of SOLDIER, as well as the childhood friend of Tifa Lockhart, who joins with AVALANCHE and makes it his mission to save the world from Shinra and his mortal enemy, Sephiroth.
In Japanese, he has been voiced by Nozomu Sasaki in Ehrgeiz: God Bless the Ring, Yukihiro Aizawa as a youth in the remake of Final Fantasy VII, and Takahiro Sakurai in most other speaking roles. In English, he has been voiced by Cody Christian and Major Dodson in the remake of Final Fantasy VII as an adult and a youth respectively, and Steve Burton in most other speaking roles.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
- He became a soldier because he was genuinely inspired by Sephiroth and looked up to him as a hero, until Sephiroth’s eventual downfall.
- When Cloud was young, he made a promise to Tifa that when he becomes a soldier, he would be there for her and protect her whenever she’s in danger, which is a promise he has kept throughout the series. Tifa is also someone close to Cloud who he can always trust.
- He loved his mother very much and was saddened and distraught by her death, wanting to punish Sephiroth for it.
- He had a great friendship with a fellow soldier Zack Fair, and when Zack died, Cloud decided to continue his legacy by taking his sword and becoming a soldier like him.
- Despite how cold and distant he can be, he slowly developed a caring relationship for many of his friends such as Barret, Wedge, Biggs, Jessie, and Aerith.
- He saved Aerith when they were both threatened by a bunch of Shinra guards.
- He showed sadness seeing many of his friends die, most notably Aerith when she was tragically stabbed in the chest by Sephiroth in front of him.
- He teams up with Tifa and Barret in Avalanche to once in for all stop Shinra and destroy them for good.
- He saves the world by stopping Sephiroth from destroying it.
- As of Advent Children, he and Tifa were protecting and looking after orphaned children in Advent Children, including Denzel, whom he acts as a role model to.
- When Sephiroth asks Cloud what he cherishes most, Cloud says that there isn’t a thing he doesn’t cherish. By this, he means his friends, both the ones that are still with him and the ones that are gone.
- He helped Vincent and the WRO fight Deepground in the events of Dirge of Cerberus.
- Even though he has some dissociative questions about who he is to the point where it greatly affects his sense of self, he doesn't have moral agency issues; since although Cloud retained many memories and was confused with Zack due to a series of factors, he still retains his individuality and characteristics that differentiate him from Zack and has a full understanding of right and wrong, therefore maintaining his free will.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- While slowly becoming friendlier and more open, Cloud can still sometimes be somewhat cold, moody, and distant towards others, even his friends (this stands out with his mutually jerkish moments with Barret).
- He can be too wrathful at times, especially with the way he talks to other people, having a short temper and being too hateful towards Sephiroth (the being whom he and Zack used to look up to and used to not be a villain) as he does not hesitate to give Sephiroth pain just for murdering his mother, Claudia, and wrongfully harming and almost murdering Tifa (even though it is justified that he is angry at him for doing the said actions).
- He can be greedy since he himself claims that a lot of what he did was for money and would not stop bugging Barret about getting his money; this is his most corrupting trait as it makes him have too much of a mercenary mentality to qualify as an NPG. Although, this (along with his arrogance) may have just been a product or byproduct of having had some pretty inaccurate ideas about heroism following the shock and trauma from Zack’s death, and appears to be subverted after his real personality is restored.
