“ | Look, Pim, I know it's our job to help this guy and everything, but I think this guy's a lost cause. He's obviously made up his mind. Why don't we just cut our losses and get out of here? | „ |
~ Charlie's most iconic quote. |
“ | Look, I could barely explain the nutty adventure I just went on... So i'm not going to, I don't- I don't want to talk about it. I've seen the devil. | „ |
~ Charlie in "Charlie Dies and Doesn't Come Back." |
Charlie Dompler is one of the two main protagonists (alongside Pim Pimling) in the Adult Swim animated sitcom Smiling Friends, serving as one of the employees of Smiling Friends Inc..
His job is to help people find happiness, but unlike his optimistic co-worker Pim, Charlie is more cynical, lazy, and pessimistic. He often shows skepticism about their work and doesn't always put in as much effort. However, despite his apathetic attitude, Charlie is a well-meaning character who ultimately tries to do his job, even if he doesn't always believe in the process.
He is voiced by the series' co-creator, Zach Hadel.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
- In "Desmond's Big Day Out," Charlie helps Pim cheer up a depressed and suicidal Desmond, inadvertently saving him from suicide and drastically improving his life by the end when he encounters a Bliblie.
- In "Mr. Frog," Charlie assists the titular celebrity in improving his character and reputation after a major controversy, which gains him his show and fans back.
- In "Shrimp's Odyssey," Charlie plays a key role in helping Shrimp with self-improvement, suggesting he move on from his break-up. He takes Shrimp to a clothing store, tanning salon, and gym. When these efforts fail, he takes him out for a drink at Spaghetti Disco, pays for it himself, and consoles him.
- In "Who Violently Murdered Simon S. Salty?", Charlie embarks on a mission to uncover who killed the titular business owner. He succeeds after meeting the Century Egg and honors the egg's final wish to be buried in China.
- In "Enchanted Forest," despite his initial reluctance, Charlie embarks on numerous quests in the Enchanted Forest, saving many people, killing monsters, and even ending century-long wars.
- In "Frowning Friends," Charlie helps victims of the titular organization, such as DJ Spit and 3D Squelton, find happiness. 3D Squelton learns to pursue a balloon license thanks to Charlie.
- In "Charlie Dies and Doesn't Come Back," Charlie embarks on a quest to revive himself after being sent to Hell. He helps Satan smile by giving constructive criticism, stands up to him when treated unfairly, and punches Jeremy, a sadistic demon, only after warning him. He later makes up with Pim over the argument they had earlier, thereby learning his lesson from God who orchestrated the events of the episode.
- In "Gwimbly: Definitive Remastered Enhanced Extended Edition DX 4K (Anniversary Director’s Cut)," Charlie is abused and coerced by James but still follows his every word. He tries to compromise with James and genuinely wants to make him smile. By the episode’s end, it's revealed that James viewed Charlie as the only person who cared about him.
- In "Mr. President," Charlie helps President Jimble become a better candidate by remediating his incompetence, leading Jimble to realize he’s not a good fit for the role and thereby helping the entire country.
- In "Erm, the Boss Finds Love?" Charlie helps free Mr. Boss from Brittney's control with Pim and Allan. They research how to kill her and later attempt to prevent her from sucking Mr. Boss's soul. Charlie is even willing to kiss Mr. Boss in "true love" to revive him.
- In "Brother's Egg," Charlie helps Professor Psychotic understand his brother's concerns, make amends, and become a better person. This leads to the two brothers declaring their intention to raise the homunculus together.
- In "Charlie, Pim, and Bill vs The Alien," while initially reluctant, Charlie starts hanging out with Pim's UFO-hunting buddies. He is shocked when Bill is killed by aliens and later stands up to the Alien Dudebros for psychologically torturing him and Pim.
- In "The Magical Red Jewel (aka Tyler Gets Fired)," Charlie looks after Mr. Boss's son Jason and feels relieved when it's revealed they didn’t let him die.
- In "Pim Finally Turns Green," Charlie helps Rotten the Snowman come to terms with death, finding him a nearly forever-cold mountaintop and getting his uncle to contact Bill Nye for a display. He later plays with Rotten at the beach, and when Rotten seemingly dies, he consoles a distraught Pim, insisting that Rotten died happy.
- In general, despite his reluctant attitude at times, he is a great friend to his co-workers and enjoys succeeding in making his clients smile, and also serves as a realistic balance to Pim's unwavering optimism.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- Unlike Pim, Charlie is rather pessimistic and doesn't show much interest in helping their clients unless it's out of self interest. At times this can make him rather cruel, as after a half-assed attempt at cheering up the suicidal Desmond, his reaction is telling him to go back to the office to sign some paperwork and then "you can do what you've gotta do".
- He's a pretty big jerk, even to those who are his friends. This comes to head in "Charlie Dies and Doesn't Come Back", where he gets into a heated argument with Pim over his lack of positivity, making him harshly cut down the tree that crushes him to death in a moment of pettiness.
- At times he's a hypocrite, as despite showing moral standards against plenty of heinous actions, he is a huge fan of Mr. Frog, someone who is incredibly amoral.
