His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
- Being a competent and strong member of Van der Linde gang, he helped Dutch in several of his plans, being extremely loyal to his leader until his downfall. While these plans mainly consist of criminal activities mostly involving robberies, Charles holds very little love for the criminal lifestyle and merely joined the gang because he found some affinity with the gang's moral code.
- Unlike the rest of the gang, including John and Arthur to an extent, Charles always remained a decent and honest man who is respected by the gang, and had never been overzealous to the criminal lifestyle unlike his fellows Micah, Bill, Javier and most of the others.
- During the gang's reside in Grizzlies West, he teaches Arthur how to use a bow to effectively hunt animals, where he has him hunt two deers to provide the group with supplies.
- Being an effective hunter, he never goes on poaching and feels anger when finding dead and rotting bison unnecessarily killed by some poachers who try to incriminate native Americans as killers.
- Upon finding a German woman and her children, whose father is missing, he searches for the man and encourages Arthur to assist him, and later fends the bandits off who took the man and rescues him, making the family get together again.
- Alongside Arthur, he rescues Josiah Trelawny from the bounty hunters, and he later saves Arthur from one of the bounty hunters capture him, by killing him with a throwable weapon.
- He takes part in the assault on Braithwaite Manor to rescue Jack Marston, John's little son.
- During the escaping Saint Denis after the failed bank robbery, he distracts some Pinkerton guards in order to allow his fellows to board a boat and escape the country, the action that is admired by Dutch and Arthur for his bravery.
- With Dutch, Arthur, Micah, Bill and Javier are separated from the gang for landing on Guarma, Charles is largely responsible for organizing the rest of the gang alongside Sadie, being the key player in keeping the gang and its morale remain together and stable, and its relocation to Lakay. He also stole the bodies of Hosea and Lenny from the morgue to give them a proper burial in Bluewater Marsh.
- He takes an essential role for helping the Wapiti Indians in their war with US Army to keep their land not occupied by them and Colonel Favours, and encourages his gang members to do the same, mainly being Arthur. His actions to helping the Indians include:
- Taking the stolen horses back from the US Army,
- Rescuing Captain Monroe, who is to be charged for treason, and sending him on to a train which is headed far away.
- Going to the Fort Wallace and rescuing Eagle Flies, who has been captured and awaits execution, from the guards.
- Partaking in the attack the Cornwall refinery at the oil fields, and rescuing a mortally wounded Eagle Flies to take him back to his father, Rains Fall, to live his last moments with him.
- He effectively leaves the Van der Linde gang when the gang start to heavily resort on murder and violence and declining his cut money from the refinery attack, instead opting to stay with the Wapiti Indians at the reservation for helping them to flee to Canada in order to escape the US Army.
- Once he is done with the Indians, he returns to the Roanoke Ridge, and gives Arthur and Miss Grimshaw proper burial upon finding their bodies.
- Eight years later since the downfall of gang, Charles stays out of outlaw life and becomes a fighter in Saint Denis, participating in fighting tournaments and getting bets.
- Upon learning John wants to build a house at Beechers's Hope, he effectively helps him and Uncle, buying wood and tools and working hardly during the building.
- When he and John are attacked by Skinner Brothers and one of their hired guns, Willard Wayne, is taken by the gang, they try to save him only to find his dead body, and Charles takes his body back to Blackwater to give him a proper burial.
- He, alongside John, stealthily assaults the Skinner's gang to rescue a kidnapped and extremely tortured Uncle.
- He participates John and Sadie reaching Mount Hagen and kill Micah Bell and his gang, getting shot by a sniper and saving Sadie from her attacker during the assault.
- He attends John and Abigail's wedding where he happily celebrates with his friends, and once recovering from his injuries, he bids farewell to his friends to begin a new life in Canada and start a family, effectively abandoning the outlaw life.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- Even though he is the most moral character within the gang, nevertheless most of his screentime is played with him being an effective outlaw partaking in various criminal activities that involve numerous robberies, property damage and murders, which ultimately makes him too resorting to lethality and criminality to be Near Pure Good.
- He also suffers from Fridge Brilliance, as although he feels remorse for his actions and seeks redemption after killing Micah Bell, his ultimate fate is uncertain and not brightened enough whether he actually managed to completely abandon the outlaw life and start a family in Canada as he intends.
- While too occassionally, he is seen being capable of wrathful at times, mainly example being him killing one of the poachers in a rage upon finding they kill buffalo unnecessarily, and encouraging Arthur to do the same, which is up to Arthur whether he either lets him go or kills him as Charles said.
