“ | I can’t get it out of my head, I f***ing dream of it seven years... Everyday I have this... Sometimes I wake up and I don’t know where I am... I don’t talk to anybody, sometimes a day... sometimes a week. | „ |
~ John Rambo on how the Vietnam War destroyed him. |
“ | Twenty-five years... my parents murdered in front of my eyes... the wet rattle of my father's dying breath... the heavy emptiness invading my mother's dilating eyes... so long ago. Too long ago... Too long to feel the loss... or the rage... or the fear... all those things that made me... I can't remember my mother. | „ |
~ Batman on how his parents’ deaths changed him. |
“ | You wanna know why I hate birthdays, Wolf? Do ya? When you grow up a snake, nobody shows up for your party. Birthdays are a constant reminder that out there, that I’m a scary, good for nothing, MONSTER! | „ |
~ Mr. Snake on why he hates birthdays. |
Inconsistently Admirable heroes who have been part of a longstanding literary concept. While mainly due to some fatal flaw, these heroes have less control over their emotions and have suffered some circumstances so unfortunate that they win over the sympathy of the audience, as they didn't choose to be alone, they are victims of misfortune. Tragic heroes commonly have their unfulfilled or broken dreams.
There are many ways to deem an Inconsistently Admirable tragic:
- Inconsistently Admirables who have or had problems with their family such as:
- Those who lost their loved ones (e.g. Batman who lost both of his parents, Stanley Pines who lost his twin brother, Shadow the Hedgehog who lost his creator and a dear friend, Scorpion who lost his whole family and clan, Jak who was separated from and later loses his father, Arthur Morgan who lost his son, Steven Universe who lost his mother, L Lawliet who was left by his parents and was sent to the orphanage, the reboot version of Scrooge McDuck who lost Della since she was stranded on the moon, Dante and Vergil, both of whom lost their parents, and Asriel Dreemurr who lost both his sibling (whom he considered his best friend) and his own life).
- Those who were the survivors of genocides on their race:
- Those who are related to villains and they have to fight them (e.g. Luke Skywalker, who had to fight his father).
- Inconsistently Admirables who grew up with toxic parents to the point of being heavily influenced by them, but have other loved ones who are positive influences that help them remain as decent people (e.g. Caine).
- Inconsistently Admirables who grew up or live in less than acceptable conditions:
- Poor Inconsistently Admirables who have little to no money (e.g. Mordin Solus and Cho Sang-woo).
- Inconsistently Admirables who grow up in a society that does awful or unwantable actions. (e.g. Mario and Mr. Snake)
- Outcasts who desire to be with and/or loved by the people around them (e.g. SpongeBob SquarePants, Patrick Star, The Venom Symbiote, Revali, Discord, and Saiko Bichitaru).
- Inconsistently Admirable heroes who has a troubled relationships with/is being mistreated by others.
- Possessed/Brainwashed Inconsistently Admirables who have done wrong things without their own choice.
- Heroes who were exposed to toxins or forces which brought out their darkest qualities, were slowly killing them, and/or granted them powers that would ideally be used for evil, but searched for help and/or use their evil powers for good, or used it as an excuse to take up heroism. (e.g. Raiden and Spider-Man from Marvel Zombies).
- Remorseful Inconsistently Admirables who deeply regret actions they have done in the past, to the point where it affects their mental health.
- Inconsistently Admirables who brought their misery upon themselves, but they take responsibility for their actions or feel great remorse for them (e.g. Dexter Reed and Egon Spengler).
- Inconsistently Admirables who are bullied and isolated by those around them (e.g. Max Keeble and Chris Rock).
- Heroes who are deformed, crippled, sick, hurting or otherwise suffering from health problems, but their physical or mental issues don't prevent them from being admirable (e.g. Dr. Gregory House).
- In many cases they have a mixture of the circumstances above. (e.g. Anakin Skywalker who was born into slavery, lost his mother, lost his wife, was mistreated by the Jedi Council, betrayed by Emperor Palpatine who he saw as a mentor, was left crippled and put on life support, feels so much remorse for his actions, and is, Guts who was born after his mother had died, sexually assaulted by Donovan as a child, and saw the deaths of his comrades at the hands of Griffith and the God Hand along with being forced to witness Casca being raped, Zuko, who was banished from his own country by his father Ozai, simply for speaking out against an immoral plan, and Johnny Joestar, who not only saw his younger brother Nicholas die in a horse accident but was later left crippled in the spine after getting shot)
It is important that the Inconsistently Admirable hero does not let their tragedies make them do terrible things on their own volition and instead use their tragedies to become better people overall. Also, not every tragic Inconsistently Admirable hero is automatically a Scapegoat since they may rise above their tragedies to live better lives or get the rewards they deserve.
They are the heroic counterparts of Tragic Inconsistently Heinous and the opposite of Fake Tragic Inconsistently Heinous
