What Makes Her Inconsistent?[]

  • She can be rather cold, and downright mean towards people. A prime example is when she told Jessie's son Sam that he would die a gruesome and terrible death so he wouldn't rat her out about stealing the guns. This led to his and his family's death when he froze in a zombie herd and started crying when he remembered her words and got him and his mother eaten.
  • She has let her wrath take over at times, like when she went out of her way to kill Alpha which resulted in Magna and Connie getting trapped in a cave and manipulating Lydia into showing herself to a whisperer, which broke her trust and caused her to run away for a short time while also causing a strain in Carol's friendship with Daryl Dixon.
  • She is particularly lethal, single-handedly causing the deaths of nearly everyone in Terminus and killing most of the Wolves herself, even executing one that Morgan had restrained. However, killing is shown to take a toll on Carol with her killing just 18 people causing her to leave Alexandria out of fear of her being forced to take more lives. Nevertheless, Carol wracks up a massive body count over the course of the series, killing without hesitation if provoked to action. In The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, taking place the better part of a decade after her kill count was only just 18 people, Carol tells Ash Patel that she's killed a lot of people, but she remembers every one of them and it never gets any easier for her to live with.
  • She has made a ton of morally ambiguous choices like:
    • Killing Karen and David and not giving them a chance to fight the Flu. She was later shown to feel remorse for it with Tyreese choosing to forgive her for it after seeing how much killing people hurt Carol.
    • Executing Lizzie, a child after she killed her sister and showed clear mental issues. However, this was also not an easy choice for Carol to make and it continues to haunt her. It was motivated by the fact that Lizzie was too dangerous to be around other people, couldn't simply be left on her own, and splitting up the group to have someone watch her was also too dangerous.
    • Manipulating the Alexandrians to believe she was weak to have to upper hand on them.
    • Killing Owen when he was trying to save Denise though to be fair, she didn't know and simply thought that Denise was still in danger from her kidnapper who had only had a change of heart after violently kidnapping Denise.
    • Burning the rogue Saviors to death in their sleep, albeit after she was provoked and had given their leader Jed multiple chances where Carol could've killed him, but didn't. In this case, the Saviors had attacked and robbed Carol and her son only hours before and, presumably, killed some of her friends and stolen their belongings, the latter part of which was the breaking point for Carol who stated that she would've let the attack on her and Henry go otherwise. Jed would desperately claim that they had only found the stuff, but it was never clear if he was telling the truth or not or who else would've killed and robbed Carol's missing friends around that time as the Whisperers hadn't yet arisen as a threat.
    • Brutally torturing a Whisperer for information on their horde.
    • Lying to Ash Patel that she needs to fly to France to search for her long-dead daughter, causing him to abandon his isolated life. This is particularly despicable as Carol chose this lie because Ash had lost his son, although it's shown to haunt her.
  • Her way of surviving is overall pragmatic as she only helps strangers in exchange for something and only let Negan out of the cell so he can kill Alpha and she didn't hold her part of the deal when he succeeded.
