“ | Man, what the hood done for me? Always dragging me down. Ever since I got out of the hood shit been cracking! That's everybody's dream, to get out of the hood... | „ |
~ CJ confronting Sweet about their lifestyle. |
Carl Johnson, better known as CJ, is the main protagonist of the 2004 video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the seventh installment of the Grand Theft Auto video game series.
He is the second-in-command of the Grove Street Families, one of the many gangs in Los Santos which has a special hatred for the Ballas. Alongside his brother "Sweet", he has to make the Families great again, as well as kill his former friends Ryder and Big Smoke for betraying the gang for the corrupt Frank Tenpenny, who CJ is forced to work for.
He was voiced by Young Maylay.
His Admirable Ranking[]
Debatable Validations[]
- It is implied multiple times that he provoked the death of his brother Brian, however how his brother died is unclear, so it is unknown why CJ did not attempt to help him. It is clear that he feels remorse whatever he had done, though.
- Confronts Sweet in saying that they should abandon the Families, because he doesn't consider it a good way to live. Even if he is right, it can be argued that is not a good reason to abandon his friends.
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
- When his brother told him about their mother's death, he returned from Liberty City to attend her funeral.
- Upon seeing that Ballas and Los Santos Vagos are taking over the city, he decides to stay in Los Santos and helps the Grove Street Families rise again.
- He hates the usage of any drugs for knowing that it can destroy a person, and fights the rival gangs and drug dealers for preventing his fellow gangsters take drugs from them.
- When Sweet and his girlfriend are attacked by the Seville Boulevard Families, he comes to their rescue.
- Despite Cesar Vialpando being from another gang, he accepts him as a friend and becomes an effective partner of him.
- He, alongside his fellow gangsters, protects Grove Street from Ballas during a party given by OG Loc.
- When seeing Denise Robinson is stuck in the burning Vagos house he set to fire, he rescues her.
- When he finds out about the betrayal of Big Smoke and Ryder, he attempts to save his brother’s life, as he was set on a trap.
- During his stay in San Fierro and Las Venturas, he makes several allies in order to prosper with them, such as Wu Zi Mu, The Truth, Dwaine, Jethro, Kent Paul, Maccer and Ken Rosenberg.
- Feels bad when he killed Ryder, because even if he betrayed him, they were still friends in childhood. That said, he later changes his mind when Cesar says Ryder tried to have sex with CJ's sister Kendl.
- He assassinates the leader of Drug Syndicate (T-Bone Mendez and Jizzy B.), and destroys their crack factory, effectively weakening them in the process.
- Accompanies Wu Zi Mu destroying the Da Nang Boys, protecting the Triads from them and saving several innocent people from getting trafficked by the Vietnamese leader Snakehead.
- When Madd Dogg attempts to suicide upon his career downfall, CJ saves his life by using a pickup track to make him land on a pile of boxes when he jumps from the roof, and driving him to the hospital before he dies.
- He kills the C.R.A.S.H officer Eddie Pulaski, who was highly corrupt and aided Tenpenny with his schemes. Even before killing Pulaski, CJ tried to reason with him that Tenpenny was only using Pulaski. When this attempt failed had Pulaski attempted to kill CJ and continued to antagonize him. Thus, CJ resorts to killing Pulaski.
- In order to get Sweet out of prison, he accomplishes very difficult works for Mike Toreno.
- When he comes back to Los Santos, he recovers the territories that the Ballas and drug dealers took from the Grove Street Families.
- Despite Big Smoke’s betrayal, he mourns his death, as he still appreciates him as an old friend.
- He is directly responsible for the death of Frank Tenpenny, a corrupt police officer and the main catalyst of the events who blackmails Carl for a long time.
- As he intends, he most likely ends up abandoning his life of crime to be Madd Dogg's manager and makes his family prosper.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- As an on & off character, he is a criminal and gangster who commits numerous atrocities which makes him too heinous.
- Despite saving Denise Robinson and Madd Dogg’s lives, he acts innocent and hypocritical because:
- In Denise's case, he was the one who burned the Vagos gang house she was inside in the first place.
- In Madd Dogg's case, he hides the fact that he ruined his life in first place by stealing his book rhymes and killed his manager.
- Despite helping and saving his allies a lot, other times he's a Darwinistic opportunist who willing to kill innocents to have more for his business, or to achieve his goals and plans. For example: he killed an innocent hotel valet to wear his outfit, killed an innocent camera man to take a photo of Caligula's casino where him and his crews will rob in a building, and killed an innocent bald man to have Millie become one of his girlfriends and to get a card to be able to rob Caligula's casino with his crews.
Trivia[]
- He is the only GTA character to be both Inconsistently Admirable and Inconsistently Heinous.
