~ Carl recounting the story of Rick Grimes to his daughter. |
Carl Grimes is the deuteragonist of The Walking Dead graphic novel series: a story set in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by walkers, where the remaining survivors struggle to stay alive and maintain their humanity. He is the son of series' protagonist Rick Grimes and and his wife Lori Grimes.
When he's first introduced, he's merely a 7-year-old boy who relies on his parents and other survivors to stay alive, but as the series progresses, he grows up, and experiences numerous traumatic events and losses, including witnessing the deaths of loved ones and facing constant life-threatening danger - which slowly shapes him into a hardened survivor.
His Good Ranking[]
Debated Validation[]
- Him killing Ben could be seen as an admirable act since he did it to spare the others from the weight of killing a child.
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
- He helped defend the Atlanta Camp when it was overrun by walkers.
- When Shane had a mental breakdown and held Rick at gunpoint, he shot Shane in the neck, killing him, to save Rick’s life.
- After Rick lost his hand to the Governor, Carl helped him adapt to using only his left-hand.
- While he initially believed he was strong enough and no longer needed Rick after the fall of the prison, he quickly realized that wasn’t true and grew to admire his father more because of it.
- He was the first person to suggest the Hilltop Colony try to fight back against the Saviors.
- He helped Rick, Andrea, and Michonne form a plan of attack against the Saviors.
- When Lydia, a former Whisperer and now refugee, was being attacked by some bullies, he protected her.
- When the people of Hilltop considered exiling Lydia, he stood up for her and even asked Rick to let her stay because she’s the only one who he felt still accepted him ever after his disfigurement.
- When the Whisperers attacked Hilltop with burning arrows, Carl rushed into one of the burning houses with Lydia to save Hershal and Sophia, and chose to stay behind to ensure the house was empty before leaving.
- After the battle, Carl hugged Lydia and reassured her that none of this was her fault and that everyone has a past they’re trying to escape.
- He offered to help lead the horde of walkers away from Alexandria.
- He protected Hershel while Michonne and the others led the horde away and encouraged the residents to assist.
- He attempted to comfort Rick after Andrea’s death.
- He returned to Hilltop to help them rebuild, despite Rick not wanting him to, because he believed the people of Hilltop needed him more.
- He apologized to Lydia after upsetting her when he indirectly implied that he saw her as a monster.
- After learning that Sebastian Milton murdered his father, he managed to keep his cool and didn’t lash out at him.
- He spares Sebastian because he knows it’s the humane thing to do and what Rick would have preferred.
- As an adult, when he learned that Hershel II brought his collection of walkers into the city, he went out of his way to kill all of them in the middle of the night to protect them from getting out.
- He risked his life countless times to protect his family, loved ones, and community, and continues to do so well into his adulthood, raising his daughter the best he can and teaching her about all of the people who risked their lives and died for them to live.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He’s lethal, having numerous kills that weren’t in self-defense:
- He hid in the back of one of the Saviors’ trucks, snuck into the Sanctuary, and used a machine gun to kill at least 8 unnamed Saviors.
- He killed another kid named Ben after discovering he had sadistically murdered his brother. However, he felt tremendous guilt for this and broke down crying when admitting what he did.
- He’s wrathful, since he visited Sebastian Milton while he was in jail and belittled him, calling him pathetic and saying he deserves to rot. He also threatened to hurt him if he ever managed to escape.
- He mercilessly beat Brandon Rose and his friend half to death for attacking him and Sophia, even though they had already been subdued. He shows no remorse for this when Brandon's parents and Maggie call him out for it. While Brandon deserved it, what Carl did was going too far.
- He immediately punched Hershel II in the face when he brought a walker into the safe-zone. Although, this was understandable considering what Hershel did was incredibly foolish and could have endangered everyone.
Trivia[]
- His counterpart from the TV adaptation is considered Near Pure Good, due to being less lethal and shedding his wrathfulness before his death.
- Ironically, this means that he is the opposite of his father Rick Grimes in both of their counterparts: While TV Rick is Inconsistently Admirable and Comic Rick is Near Pure Good, TV Carl is Near Pure Good and Comic Carl is Inconsistently Admirable.
