Their Good Ranking[]
Debated Validations[]
- Due to Crest of Flames which caused them to have no emotion in the beginning of the game, they could have moral agency issues. However, since they sometimes display emotions and made choices by themselves, they still have a moral agency.
- While protecting Edelgard from being executed can be seen as a good action. There were some problems with it:
- Their student could have chosen to fight with the Church, which means Byleth would have to fight them. Hopefully their student chose to join them.
- It's more likely that they protected Edelgard only for her and not for any ideals. This means that Byleth could have acted selfishly on it or didn't think about all the consequences.
- During the Chapter 14. The player can recruit or kill Lysthea after beating her. However, since it's up to the player to decide, it's impossible to tell what choice is made.
What Makes Them Admirable?[]
- Alongside Jeralt, they helped Edelgard, Dimitri and Claude get rid of the bandits who chased them.
- When Kostas tried to kill Edelgard, they tried to protect her which would have killed them if Sothis didn't rewind time.
- During their time as a teacher, in addition to help them to improve their grades and capacity. They helps them personally, notably on the supports and the paralogues.
- They helped the Church to face threats against them like eliminating the bandits or the Church's opposition.
- They prevented the Sword of Creator from being stolen.
- They saved Flayn and Monica from the Death Knight.
- During the Cindered Shadows story, they saved Yuri, Hapi, Constance and Balthus from Aelfric.
- They came to the aid of Remire village when it was under attack by Solon.
- They defeated Kronya and Solon alongside their students.
- Despite joining the Empire, they did not become corrupted and kept their most of their redeeming qualities.
- They are always supporting Edelgard when she needs it and helped her be a better person. In this route thanks to Byleth's kindness and mercy, she ultimately redeemed herself as she cares more about her allies and she does less morally wrong actions than in the other routes.
- Byleth can choose to spare Claude after defeating him.
- If Byleth fights against Seteth and Flayn and beat them, they will spare them and let them leave.
- They eliminated Cornelia who was a member of Those Who Slither in The Dark.
- Though one could argue that the Empire is the antagonistic faction of the game. In this route, it is shown that the Church isn't the good faction neither, with Rhea showing her true colors. This shows that Byleth wasn't necessarily wrong by joining the Empire. In fact they managed to make the Empire better.
- After winning against Rhea, Byleth prepares to fight Those Who Slither in The Dark.
What Makes Them Inconsistent?[]
- They are lethal to their enemies. During their time as a mercenary They was called "Ashen Demon" due to being merciless with them. While they showed remorse for having to fight their former allies during the war. The same cannot be said for the others who fought in the war. Though to be fair, this is attenuated by the fact that killing was a part of battle and also by the fact that Byleth lacked feelings.
- When Kronya tries to flee, Byleth chases her surely for vengeance for killing their father. This backfired as Solon trapped her into the void. They fortunately get out of the void by merging with Sothis, with the consequence being that they couldn't communicate together anymore (Until the end of the game if the player choose her as their S support).
- While Edelgard lost a lot of corrupting factors thanks to Byleth, she did not get rid of them all, and Byleth sometimes agreed (reluctantly) with some morally wrong decisions from Edelgard such as:
- Working with Those who Slither in the Dark.
- When Those who Slither in the Dark used Javelins of Light to destroy Rowe, Edelgard wanted to put the blame of the Church to not lose their followers' support.
- Letting Edelgard kill Dimitri.
- Byleth can choose to kill Claude after defeating him. Though to be fair:
- Claude will be killed if another unit outside of Byleth of Edelgard finish him.
- Edelgard also has the choice to kill him.
- Byleth will have remorse for that, asking if killing Claude was necessary, unlike Edelgard who confirms it was necessary.
