Byakuya Togami is one of the main protagonists of the Danganronpa franchise. His title is Ultimate Affluent Progeny.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
- He helps Makoto Naegi investigate the murder cases involving Genocide Jack.
- While he starts off enjoying the Killing School Life and even going along with it for his own amusement, he bows out after after the fourth trial and Sakura's sacrifice, instead swearing to take the mastermind's life.
- He helps Makoto, Kyoko, and the others with the Chapter 5 and 6 investigations.
- After finding out the Togami family fell as a result of the Tragedy, he declared that they haven’t fallen yet as he was still standing, and swore on his family to kill Junko Enoshima, the mastermind of the killing game.
- After escaping, he joined the Future Foundation when they rescued him and the other survivors to help fight against the tragedy.
- He gave Toko Fukawa a stun gun to keep Genocide Jack under control. He was also the reason why Genocide Jack stopped her serial killing because of a promise Toko made to him to keep Genocider Jack from committing another murder.
- He saves Komaru Naegi from her prison and gave her a hacking gun to defend herself from the Monokumas and other enemies she encountered later on in Towa City, and action that resulted in him getting captured in the process.
- He chooses to respect Makoto’s decision of rehabilitating the Remnants of Despair rather than executing them like the rest of the Future Foundation wanted.
- He, alongside Makoto and Kyoko, entered the Neo World Program to stop AI Junko from turning Hajime, Sonia, Fuyuhiko, Akane and Kazuichi back into the Remnants of Despair, and turning the world into Junkoland, all while knowing the risks of going inside the program given what had happened to it.
- He helps save the former remnants from being found and killed by the Future Foundation by evacuating them from Jabberwock Island.
- He rescued Yasuhiro Hagakure when he was being shot at by a helicopter while the latter was left stranded outside the Final Killing Game.
- Along with Yasuhiro, he broke into the headquarters and rescue Makoto and Aoi from the final killing game.
- Overall, while he starts off with almost no positive qualities, and still never completely subverts every single one of his corrupting qualities, he still warms up to Makoto and the other survivors with time, and becomes a much more selfless and heroic character later on.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He's rude, a massive jerk and incredibly arrogant. At the start of Trigger Happy Havoc, he looked down on everyone else, as shown by him calling Mondo “plankton” to demonstrate how insignificant the other students were to him. Much of his free time events with Makoto consist of him being very rude towards the latter, even calling him a loser in his final event. He even goes as far as to tell Aoi to let Sakura die after she was revealed to be Monokuma's spy among the students in chapter 4. And while he does warm up to the others later on and outshed much of his selfishness, he never loses all of his arrogance and jerk behaviour, even coldly blaming the survivors of the Killing School Trip for falling into despair and claiming it was their responsibility, despite them being brainwashed. Overall, his egotism is far too much for him to even be NPG.
- On top of his arrogance, he has an ego the size of Hopes Peak Academy.
- He vandalised Chihiro’s corpse because he wanted to make the second trial more interesting, as he caught Mondo in the act of killing the former. He could've also easily told the others what he saw and ended the case quickly, but instead he made things more complicated for his own amusement, all the while knowing that his actions would actively risk the lives of everyone in the trial. He even outed Toko as Genocide Jack to everyone, breaking his promise to her not to tell anyone. On top of everything he did, he shows no remorse for anything at any point.
- He is very abusive towards Toko. While Toko’s crush on him is excessive to a massively unhealthy degree, Byakuya himself isn’t much better given the way he treats her in turn. He constantly uses her as his personal emotional punching bag in ways that include ridiculing, humiliating and even torturing her, such as telling her she’s not allowed to open her mouth without his permission, which Yasuhiro calls out for being too cruel even for him. He even coldly stated that he wouldn't care if Toko died, and that everyone else would also be better off without her.
