Who's the friend that likes to play? Bing Bong, Bing Bong, Who's rocket makes you shout Hooray?
~ Bing Bong's theme song.
You made it! Go, go save Riley. Take her to the moon for me, okay?
~ Bing Bong's last words before he fades away.

Bing Bong is the tritagonist of Pixar's 15th full-length feature film, Inside Out. He is Riley’s imaginary friend from her youth who runs into Joy and Sadness and helps them on their path back to Headquarters.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

  • He is first seen gathering some of Riley’s old happy memories, as he greatly missed and cherished those times, when he’s spotted by Joy, which causes him to run away believing he’s in trouble, until he’s cornered.
  • Upon being recognized by Joy and informed of the situation, he wastes no time in offering help and showing them the path to Headquarters by proposing the idea of taking the Train of Thought instead of walking through the crumbling Personality Islands, as well as emptying his bottomless satchel and lending it to Joy so that she can safely store the Core Memories inside. While walking, he and Joy reminisce on his time with Riley in her youth which leads Joy to promise to make Riley remember him, much to his delight.
  • They eventually reach a gateway of abstract thought which Bing Bong proposed to cross as a shortcut in order to reach the train station instead of going the longer way like Sadness suggested. He then convinces the two emotions to cross quickly with him in order to reach the station though the machine is turned on which leads to them going through several stages of deconstruction into simpler forms of thought, forcing them to quickly make way to the exit and miss the train. Once outside Bing Bong acknowledges his mistake and cheers Joy up by promising to take them to another station through Imagination Land.
  • He shows Joy and Sadness around and during the tour he retrieves his Rocket Wagon which he’d hidden for safekeeping and accidentally knocks over a card tower, instantly apologizing to the Mind Workers who built it.
  • Upon spotting the destruction of certain places and the many changes that are happening throughout Imagination Land due to Riley growing up and maturing he tries to stop the Mind Workers from doing so, not understanding why this must happen, when suddenly his Rocket is tossed by the Workers into the Memory Dump which leaves him in a depressive state.
  • Joy tries to cheer him up but fails, before Sadness empathizes with the way he’s feeling and relates to him, allowing him to cry it out before he stands up and leads them to the station.
  • The trio then heads to Dream Productions to try and wake Riley up, with Bing Bong keeping the Core Memories safe while Joy and Sadness infiltrate the filming process.
  • He helps Joy and Sadness wake up Jangles the Clown so they can scare Riley awake.
  • After succeeding in doing so, the Trio board the Train once again where Bing Bong is shocked by how big Riley has gotten, However upon Honesty Island’s destruction due to Anger having Riley act on the idea to run away, the Train collapses into the ground, where Bing Bong helps the Mind Workers to pull Joy and Sadness out in time before the Train falls to the Dump.
  • There, they’re informed of Riley’s plan which causes them to quickly search for ways back to Headquarters, with Joy trying to use a recall tube by herself to get back in time at the cost of leaving Sadness and Bing Bong behind, however it collapses alongside part of Family Island and causes Joy to fall. Bing Bong tries to catch her, but it only ends up in him falling down to the Memory Dump as well.
  • Once there he tries to stop Joy from trying to crawl out and falling repeatedly. However afterwards Joy tries to call out for Bing Bong’s Rocket, which causes him to do the same.
  • The two of them find the Rocket and try to get out several times by singing the theme song to power the Rocket. However after many failed attempts and realizing that he’s already begun to fade, Bing Bong decides to sacrifice himself to get Joy back up, knowing that Riley needs to be happy.
  • He then convinces Joy to try one more time and jumps off the Rocket right as it lifts up from the ground. Joy makes it back and runt to the ledge to see Bing Bong happily cheering her on and prompting her to go and save Riley, asking her to take her to the moon for him before fading away.
  • His sacrifice motivated Joy and allowed her to get back up to Headquarters with Sadness using Riley’s imaginary boyfriends, leading to Sadness taking back Anger’s idea and stopping Riley from running away.
  • While he did endanger himself and Joy and Sadness by going through Abstract Thought, it was not his intention and he was unaware of the possible dangers of the path, since it had never been activated before, much less with him inside. Not to mention he acknowledges that it was a bad idea later on and instantly tries to make up for it.
  • While the Emotions have a much larger role in both films and take a larger part in saving Riley, Bing Bong stands out due to his sacrifice to get Joy back to Headquarters, as he’s the only reason she was able to get out of the Memory Dump and later hatch a plan to return to Headquarters with Sadness, stopping Riley from running away and creating new Core Memories to maintain new Personality Islands, as well as allowing Riley to feel happy and sad once again.
  • A year later, Joy is shown to have kept a figurine of Bing Bong to show that she did not forget him nor his sacrifice.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He willingly murdered a citizen of Cloudtown by blowing him away after he caught him trying to use a piece of his wall for transportation and asked if he was going to pay for it. Bing Bong then walks away whistling innocently. This whole event even led to said citizen's wife contacting the Mind Police for a full-blown investigation and while Joy only accidentally blew away the Cloud Citizen's wife, Bing Bong did it by choice and never showed remorse for it, which makes it too much of a corrupting factor for even a Near Pure Good character.

Trivia[]

  • He and Anger are the only two Inside Out characters to be Inconsistently Admirable.
  • He was originally proposed for Pure Good and Near Pure Good but was rejected due to his lethality to the citizen of Cloudtown and with the practically nonexistent heinous standard, one remorseless murder is enough to bring him down a bit.
