Big Boss (real name John), formerly known as Naked Snake, is one of the two main protagonists (alongside Solid Snake) in the Metal Gear franchise. He served as the main protagonist of the Big Boss Saga.
He was a former FOX special agent, who later left the organization and formed his own private army named Militaires Sans Frontieres (Soldiers Without Borders) and then tried to fulfill his own ideal of Outer Heaven, where the world would have never-ending wars, after MSF got disbanded. Throughout his journey, he had stopped any possible world conflicts or nuclear wars without rest.
He was a genuine hero who tried to fight for the right thing and tried not to obey any rigid or corrupted laws or regulations.
He has saved the world many times from any possible world wars or any all-out nuclear wars without resting any single second.
Even after fallen to corruption, he still remained his honor, code and affability through his whole life.
Despite his flaws, he still held his ultimate respect to The Boss and tried his best to intepret her will in his way, so that he could attempt to save the world.
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater[]
During Virtuous Mission, he rescued Sokolov, the person who was behind building the Shagohod and tried to bring him to safety.
After encountering the reckless Ocelot and easily defeated him, instead of humiliating him, he complimented him, saying "you're pretty good!", which eventually became Ocelot's catchphrase.
He then confront The Boss, who turned out to be a traitor, and tried to reason with her.
After getting defeated and severely injured by The Boss, he still tried to stay alive and commence the next mission, Operation Snake Eater, which he had to kill The Boss, who was supposed to be a traitor.
After encountering Ocelot again, he stopped EVA from shooting him, saying that he was still young.
When he got informed about the prototype Metal Gear, as well as the Philosopher's Legacy and the Shagohod. After that, he determined to infiltrate the Groznyj Grad and prevent any possible nuclear war initiated by Volgin.
During his missions, he had encountered and defeated many dangerous Cobra Unit members, who are The Pain, The Fear, The End.
When he fought The End, he accepted an honorable fight with him, and if he died of old age, he was genuinely disappointed that he could not give him an honorable duel.
He tried his best to stop Colonel Volgin from using the Philosopher's Legacy to initiate a nuclear war.
He endured the extreme torture by Volgin so that he could not get any information from him.
After successfully escaped from his torture, he tried his best to come back to Groznyj Grad to destroy Shagohod. He managed to defeat Volgin multiple times and finally stopped his plan to launch nuke and start an all-out nuclear war.
He tried to confront The Boss and was convinced by her to defeat her, so that the world can maintain peace. He successfully defeated her and "forcefully" killed her, and the world could be at peace again.
Despite killing her, he felt extreme regret and remorse for killing his mentor and mother figure.
At the end, despite The Boss being labeled as a war criminal, he gave her an ultimate respect and honor in her grave. He then retired from FOX because of his extreme guilt.
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops[]
After encountering Roy Campbell in his mission, he then freed him and they together cooperated in their missions. They eventually took down multiple Red Army and FOX rogue soldiers from causing chaos.
He then pursued Gene, the leader of FOX, who was known to build his nuclear missiles to create his own Army's Heaven.
He recruited many of the Red Army soldiers he defeated and they together destroyed any remaining nuclear missiles, preventing from possible nuclear strikes from happening once again.
After many fights against Frank Jaeger, he spared him many times and respected his dedication. He also contacted the hospitalized Campbell and dedicated himself to fight for his own ideals and for the greater good. At the end, he established FOXHOUND, to carry on any good legacy left from the fallen FOX.
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker[]
Prior to the events of the game:
After the Les Enfant Terribles Incident by Major Zero, he then became disgusted with his ideas of cloning, he then left the Patriots because he acknowledeged their corruption.
He stopped a war in Latin America and also recruited Kazuhira Miller, whom he rescued, to together form the private army called Militaires Sans Frontieres, where every soldier were treated with honor and not just mere tools.
He cooperated with the Latin Americans to prevent any nuclear wars from happen and to maintain orders of the world.
During his operations, he rescued the siblings Amanda and Chico and eventually recruited them to protect the world from nuclear wars.
He actively assissted Amanda's revolution army. During his mission, as well as destroying multiple walking AI machines from possibly launching nukes.
After knowing about Hot Coldman's plan to initiate a nuclear war, he tried his best to defeat him and managed to destroy the nuke mounted Peace Walker just in time.
At the same time, he also used help from his revolution allies, as well as his MSF soldiers to defeat any of Hot Coldman's men.
At the end, he managed to stopped another all-out nuclear war from happening, as well as reassuring the governments of both sides.
He then captured Zadornov, and then destroyed ZEKE, his own Metal Gear, from Paz and Cipher, stopping any possible war once again.
Metal Gear Solid V[]
After knowing about Paz's alive status, he decided to save her, despite her betrayal a year ago. He also helped disarm one of the bombs inside Paz's body.
During his rescue, he also saved Chico and other innocent captives, he then brought all of them to his helicopter and brought them to safety.
After MSF's destruction and his eventual 9-year coma, he woke up and rescued Venom Snake, his medic and helped him escape the hospital. He then contacted Ocelot to rescue him on time while he had his own escape route.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of The Patriots[]
After waking up from his 2nd coma, he then redeemed himself and cooperated with Big Mama/EVA and Ocelot to secretly help the heroes in defeat the Patriots AI once and for all, saving the world once again from the control by AI.
At the end, he reunited with Solid Snake, they then had a heart-to-heart conversation like father and son. He was eventually forgiven by Snake and accepted his peaceful death.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
Even before fallen, he was way too lethal and was ultimately an anti-heroic assassin, which was far too corrupting to be NPG.
He always brutally and ruthlessly killed hostile soldiers in first resort, without deciding if they were actually evil or not, just to easily advance in his missions.
It was once proved in The Sorrow boss, when he got extremely exhausted and collapsed because he had to face the spirit of the soldiers he killed.
After Ground Zeroes Incident, he had fallen to corruption and even got himself pass the heinous standard, further preventing him from being NPG.
As he started to use many extreme methods and war crimes, like recruiting child soldiers and committed mass murders, just to pursue his own goals, and wanted to establish Outer Heaven, so that he could turn the world to the never ending wars.
His actions could have caused many more deaths than he was responsible for, which caused many heroes like Solid Snake to stop him from doing his mess.
