“ | You've got the wrong idea. I'm not strong, and I'm not popular. In fact, my entire life has been cursed. I know full well how you feel, envying and hating everyone around you. | „ |
~ Atsushi to Lucy Maud Montgomery |
Atsushi Nakajima is the main protagonist of the Bungo Stray Dogs franchise.
As an orphan, Atsushi was thrown out of his orphanage, becoming starved and homeless, after those running the orphanage considered him "worthless". While looking for someone to mug for money, he chances across Osamu Dazai, who is trying to kill himself. Rather than mugging him Atsushi instead stops him from killing himself. Atsushi is subsequently hired by Dazai to work for the Armed Detective Agency and discovers that he has a power called "Beast Beneath the Moonlight" that allows him to turn into a large tiger with enhanced abilities.
He was voiced by Yūto Uemura in Japanese and Max Mittelman in English, the latter of whom voices Saitama from One-Punch Man. In the stage plays, he was played by Yūki Torigoe.
His Good Rankings[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
In General[]
- He shows sympathy towards anyone who shares similar traumatic experiences as him as an abused orphan, namely Kyōka and Lucy.
- He cares deeply for his allies in the Armed Detective Agency as if they were his family.
- He's always willing to help other in need when he has the chance and believes that power is meant to save people who are in the pit of despair.
Main Series[]
- While on the brink of starvation, he sees Dazai floating in the river drowning and dives in to save him.
- He saves Naomi from what he thought was a bomb by covering himself up with it to lessen the blast radius. Despite it being only a fake, it shows that he's willing to put his life on the line to save others.
- After he, Junichiro and Naomi were attacked by Akutagawa and Higuchi, one of his first thoughts were if they were alright.
- After realizing that the Port Mafia is targeting him for his ability, Atsushi decided to leave the ADA to protect his fellow comrades from being under attack again. He later rejoined the organization with joyful tears when he found out that the ADA is more capable of defending themselves than they look.
- He joined Ranpo and Dazai to investigate the crime scene by restraining the culprit who was responsible for murder, which revealed to be Officer Sugimoto.
- During his mission to stop the train hijack with Yosano, he saved Kyōka's life from being forced to kill herself with a bomb strapped on her chest.
- Before turning her into the police, he gives Kyōka a chance to spend the rest of the day enjoying herself like any other girl her age.
- He rescued Kyōka from being killed by Akutagawa and also saves her from being used as an expendable pawn in the Port Mafia.
- He rescued Kenji, Tanizaki, and Naomi from Lucy's pocket dimension ability.
- After that, he tries to apologize to Lucy for threatening her before the girl eventually runs away.
- He helped Naomi and Haruno evacuate from the train station to avoid being attacked by the Guild.
- He along with Dazai saved Yokohama from Q's curse
- While it's uncertain, he decided to form an alliance with the Port Mafia, so they can stop the Guild from causing further destruction in Yokohama. In addition, he eventually teamed up with Akutagawa to defeat Francis, allowing Kyōka to pass the exam and join the Agency.
- Although he was under the influence of Q’s curse, he apologizes to Naomi and Haruno for attacking them.
- Despite the fact that he's understandable unwilling to forgive his abusive father figure (the orphanage director), he secretly attends his funeral and mourned over his loss.
- He and Akutagawa defeated Ivan during the Cannibalism incident.
- He snuck into the building the government officials were held hostage in to turn off the timer set to kill them.

- After Ranpo found out that the captain of the Hunting Dogs Ōchi Fukuchi is the leader of the Decay of the Angel as Kamui, he, alongside Akutagawa, fought and attempted to defeat him.
- After they "won" against him, Atsushi thought about his last words and took pity on him after his death.
- During his fight with vampire Akutagawa, he stopped himself from hitting him with a punch that could have killed him.
- When Fyodor bribes Atsushi into joining him by telling him that the Detective Agency can be saved by using the power of the page if he does, Atsushi accepts his offer in order to save them (only for Fyodor to rip the page in front of him).
- He saves Akutagawa from being sliced by Ame-no-gozen.
Dead Apple[]
- He defeats Shibusawa, stopping his ability consuming fog from covering the entire planet.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- While he does mean well, Atsushi's lack of self-confidence leads him to make decisions that could potentially harm the Detective Agency like when he proposed to form a temporary alliance with the Port Mafia in order to defeat the Guild, which is something Fukuzawa objected because working with criminals goes against everything they stand for, and when he told Francis that he and the Agency will help him find whatever he's looking for while at the same time begging him not to use Q's curse to send Yokohama into chaos.
- Although it was necessary in order to undo the Decay of the Angel's plot of framing them as terrorist, He and Kyōka illegally broke into a maximum-security prison under a government bank in order to save Mushitaro.
- He has a black and white world view that acts as a HUGE chokehold on him to the point where he can seem hypocritical.
- To him, anyone who does bad things is in his eyes is a 'bad' person and they deserve what's coming to them, with Akutagawa being a good example, as even though his dislike toward Akutagawa is justified due to Akutagawa attempting to kill him and Kyōka in season 1 and almost getting in his way of stopping the Moby Dick from crashing into Yokohama, Atsushi never took the time to understand Akutagawa and his actions until later on. Instead, similar to how his orphanage director judged him, Atsushi judges Akutagawa every time Akutagawa so much as grinds his gears, like when Atsushi said "I may be pathetic but the reason you flaunt your own strength is so that people can fear you. You’re telling me that’s not pathetic?" at the climax of The Guild Arc.
- To him, his allies in the Detective Agency are 'good' people no matter what they do and would on some occasions make excuses for them or completely overlook some of the bad things they did or have done in the past (even if they were for the great or good). In the DEAD APPLE movie, in responds to Akutagawa planning on killing Shibusawa, Atsushi responds with a "that's not how we do things at the Armed Detective Agency." when in truth, Atsushi knows that's a lie. He also seems to believe that Dazai is purely a good person, yet he has no idea what the other side of Dazai is like.
