There's nowhere you can hide, Spartan. Put as much distance between you and the truth as you want, it changes nothing. Pretend to be everything you are not: teacher, husband, father. But there is one unavoidable truth you will never escape: You cannot change. You will always be a monster.
~ Athena taunting Kratos about his violent nature, and her most famous quote.

Athena is a major character in the God of War franchise, being a major ally-turned final antagonist of the Greek Saga and a cameo antagonist in the Norse Saga. She helped Kratos after the latter gained an ill repute through the entire Greek Realm with his crimes. But after Kratos swore vengeance against Zeus, Athena sacrificed herself to protect Zeus, while getting infected with the evils of the Pandora's Box and manipulated Kratos.

Her Good Ranking[]

What Makes Her Admirable?[]

  • Convinced Ares to spare Kratos when he attacked him to save Deimos.
  • Placed the power of Hope into Pandora's box so that the corruption of Pandora's box can be stopped.
  • Informed Kratos about how Morpheus had infected the world with fog that was putting both mortals and gods in slumber, thus helping him stop it.
  • Helped Kratos fight Ares at several points during his journey to retrieve Pandora's Box.
  • Despite everything that he did, it's implied that Athena was saddened by the death of Ares, as she tells Kratos that the gods are "mourning the of [their] brother", although she does understand that he had to be stopped.
  • Stopped Kratos from committing suicide and awarded him the position of God of War.
  • Tried to stop Kratos from waging war against the world for vengeance.
  • Warned Kratos to not trust Gaia, which will be proven to be correct.
  • Tried to stop Kratos from fighting Zeus.
  • When Kratos was about to deal a fatal blow to Zeus, Athena intervened so that Olympus doesn't get destroyed with Zeus's death.
  • Despite being angry about Kratos betraying her, she showed compassion to him and encouraged him to move forward.

What Makes Her Inconsistent?[]

  • Assisted Ares in kidnapping Deimos on Zeus's orders, which lead to him getting tortured for decades by Thanatos. She also was part of the destruction and killing of Kratos' village.
  • Assisted Kratos in his warpath against the Olympian Gods after being infected by Greed.
  • Betrayed Kratos after he killed Zeus, only so that she could reign over the destroyed Greek realm.
  • Even centuries after the events of the destruction of Olympus, Athena appeared in front of a remorseful Kratos who retrieved Blades of Chaos to save his son, mocking him as a monster who would never change.
