Don't kill, and don’t be killed, alright? That’s the best you can strive for.
~ Asriel to Frisk.

Asriel Dreemurr is the main antagonist of Toby Fox's indie RPG Undertale.

He is the son of Asgore Dreemurr and Toriel and the adoptive sibling of Chara, the fallen human Asriel found and befriended. When he and his sibling made a plan to free their people from the Underground they were trapped in, it backfired and resulted in both of their deaths.

Asriel was eventually reborn as a talking golden flower, and he would later go by the name Flowey. Unfortunately, Flowey's newfound ability to reset the timeline, coupled with his lack of empathy, slowly led him to view the world as a game and its inhabitants as his playthings.

His only voice clip in English was taken from an archived McDonald's advertisement by the late Willard Scott. In Japanese, the line was dubbed by game's creator, Toby Fox.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

  • When he found Chara, injured after their fall, he took them to his house and helped them alongside his family, becoming a good sibling to them and providing them a caring family in Underground.
  • While he did help in Chara's death by getting the buttercups they would use to kill themselves with, and planned to steal six human SOULs, it was for a good reason as it was part of a plan to free monsterkind.
  • When the humans attacked and tried to kill him, believing he is the one who killed Chara, he refused to fight back despite having the power to destroy them all.
  • Even after becoming Flowey, he originally was a hero who used his powers for good, outright claiming he made everyone happy in one timeline, even though he lost his capacity for love and compassion. That said, he would later on become a cruel villain.
  • When he redeems himself in the True Pacifist Route, he expresses remorse for his actions and destroys the Barrier to free all monsterkind.
  • He refuses to go back to his family, knowing he will turn into a flower soon, as he fears he might hurt them again without a soul.
  • He gives Frisk some advice, telling them to not kill anyone, and to know that there are a lot of people like his villainous Flowey persona in the world.
  • If the player turns on the game again after achieving the True Pacifist Route, he (having turned back into Flowey) breaks the fourth wall (or talks to Chara depending on the interpretation) and begs them not to play the game anymore so that Frisk and their friends can live a happy life.
  • Official dialogue from an unreleased alarm clock app reveals that sometime before Frisk fell into the Underground, Flowey found an exhausted Toriel splayed out on the Ruins. Although he still laughed at her and called her pathetic, it's implied afterwards that he also took her to bed and left her a glass of water. A similar situation is hinted to have occurred when Toriel passed out drunk after the monsters' holiday party.
    • The fact that Toriel still remembers the Ruins incident suggests that it took place during Flowey's most recent reset, long after he had become a villain, showing that even then, he still had redeeming qualities and cared for his mother.

What Make Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He turned into a sociopathic, cataclysmic manipulator after succumbing to villainy as Flowey, which also earned him a spot on the Inconsistently Heinous wiki. Plus, he'll often stay villainous, redeeming himself in only one of multiple endings.
  • While Flowey's post-Pacifist speech and the alarm clock dialogue both prove that his redemption stuck, he still retains way too many corrupting traits to be NPG — such as his rudeness and tendency to crack morbid jokes. When he is asked what his favorite part of winter is, he answers that it's the snow, given that it's "completely indistinguishable" from the dust of the asker's (implied to be Frisk's) friends.

Trivia[]

  • His Deltarune counterpart doesn't qualify as he hasn't appeared yet, meaning he lacks personality, and is presented as a simple nice guy so far. However, it might change later on since it seems that he will actually become an important character.
